NEW YORK (AP) — Politicians seizing on immigrants as an election issue. Newspaper headlines calling for action. Talk of legislation to institute a ban.
If viewers of "The Chinese Exclusion Act" documentary end up with a sense of deja vu between the film's subject, a law from 1882 that barred Chinese people from coming to the United States, and current events, that's pretty much the point, according to its filmmakers.
"The 'A-Ha!' for anybody coming to it ... is oh, there's a history to how we have decided who can come and when they can come, who's a citizen and who's not a citizen," said documentarian Ric Burns, who made the film with Li-Shin Yu. It airs on the PBS television series "American Experience" on Tuesday.
The Chinese Exclusion Act was America's first and only immigration act that barred people from a specific country from coming to the United States. After its initial enactment for a 10-year period in 1882, it was regularly renewed and then made permanent in 1904. It was finally repealed in 1943.
Making the documentary was an eye-opening experience for Burns and Yu, who had never heard of the law and believe most of the American public isn't aware of it either, but should be.

The Japanese-Americans are another group of Asians who, despite their being incarcerated during World War II, losing everything in the process, are the poster group of being the American success story. Although their families spent the war years in interment camps, thousands of Japanese-American men enlisted in the military and fought for America during WWII in both Europe & the Pacific. One of their units, the 442nd Regimental Combat Unit, was the most decorated during WWII.

In 2006 87% of democrats voted in favor of H.R.6061 ( the secure fence act of 2006). The bill called for a 700 mile fence to be built on the U.S. Mexico border and was signed into law in October of 2006 by then president George W. Bush. Those of note voting in favor of the fence were senators; Feinstine, Pelosi, Schumer, Bidnen, Clinton, and Obama. Look it up for yourselves.

Anybody can read our history books, nearly every immigrant group faced issues upon mass migration ("legally") into the US. The Italians, the Irish, the Germans, Eastern Europeans... yet they assimilated, worked, created businesses and jobs, required their children learn English. We as a nation have an issue with ILLEGAL migration and those that over stay Visa's or Temporary Refugee status, then have children to anchor their spot here in the USA. No welfare was given to the immigrants of earlier settlements.

Why can't the left speak honestly about illegal immigration?

The United States takes in more immigrants than THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED. We have BY FAR the most liberal immigration laws in the world. We have NOTHING for which we owe ANONE an apology on that score. All foreigners in China at that time had to live in special enclaves, and NONE were allowed citizenship

See we do have a precedent. Now do the right thing and keep all but the best and brightest out of our country!!

How about this: we want the laws enforced! Foreign citizens should be prevented from coming here without notifying authorities and going through legal process. Is that clear enough for you??

No one is for barring immigration, but merely reckonizimg that laws must be followed. If you don’t respect our immigration laws, how can you respect our nation? And if you don’t respect our nation, why sneak in?

21 Trillion in debt...Failing education system...stagnant wages...High healthcare costs and automation around the corner...We have too many people in this country as it is and need to focus on strengthening and not be so thinly spread with needy people. Put a moratorium on legal immigration until we get our act together

No doubt this film is trying to draw parallels where there are vague similarities, while overlooking key differences. One being there was no welfare state in the US, for citizens or non-citizens, so there was not risk of immigrants becoming a burden. Those who Obama allowed in from war-torn Muslim countries by the hundreds of thousands per year have no education, no skills, no assets, and little chance of assimilating - they are almost certainly to become lifelong, perhaps multi-generational burdens.
