I can't believe this has to be said but I am seeing so many people on here suggest posters to take jobs at nameless ESL（非母语英语课程） mills and ONLY looking at the salary as a basis of whether or not he should take a job. There are so many precautions you have to take before even thinking about accepting a job at any of them.

1.if the requirements for the nameless ESL mills are not AT LEAST a bachelors degree and 2 years of related work experience OR a TESL certificate(120 hours) it's 100% a scam. Depending on the region you must also be from a native English speaking country or graduated from a university where the primary language of instruction was English I have heard this is flexible if you meet the requirements of a B class foreigner.

1. 如果这些不知名培训机构不要求你至少学士学位、2年相关工作经验或者有（国际英语）TESL证书（120小时）的话，那这绝对是个坑。地区不同，也可能要求求职者来自英语母语国家或毕业自英语为主教学语言的大学，据说如果你达到B级外国人的要求，这些都是可商量的。

2.Check online for schools and training centres that are blacklisted.

3.Make sure your employer is willing to to the due process and insists on going through the work visa regulations the legal way. It may be enticing to just go over there and start but you will have no legal recourse if the school just decides to take money away from your pay for ANY reason.

3. 确保培训机构愿意遵守法定程序并坚持在法律规范下办理工作签证。到了就上班确实具有吸引力，但是如果你的雇主因此找个借口扣你工资的话你也将无法获得法律帮助。

With that being said I would still not suggest working at these training centres. Hours are long and depending on the job it can be stressful. You won't actually be doing anything fulfilling except singing brown bear brown bear what do you see for an entire year. You won't get any useful work experience unless you want to continue to be a teacher. Furthermore the money is absolutely not worth it.

If you want to take a job in China and are a newbie with no experience I highly suggest trying to take a university job. The pay is going to be much lower maybe even as low as 6000 RMB depending on the city but the contract is going to be a hundred times better and you will enjoy your life a hundred times more. Not only will they almost certainly go through all the legal processes but you won't be jerked around in regards to pay. You are at most only going to be working 15 hours a week(each work hour is only about 45 minutes) with maybe an office hour or two. They may also require ESL corners. Not only that but the job is actually going to be fulfilling - at least in comparison to a nameless ESL mill.

如果你是一个没有经验想在中国找工作的新手的话，我强烈建议你尝试去大学找工作。薪水可能会低很多，有些城市甚至低至每月6000元，但是合同会规范百倍且你会百倍享受生活。大学不仅仅几乎肯定会走必要的法律程序，而且不会在支付薪水上耍你。最多你只需每周工作15个工作小时（每个工作小时其实只有约45分钟），然后在办公室坐班1或2个小时。也可能要求你举办英语角。不尽如此，但是大学的工作是很有成就感的——至少和那些不知名的培训机构相比是如此。

I am really surprised at the amount of posters who suggest anything but this. Yes there are so many university students who don't have any work experience and want to experience China. Maybe it's to learn the language maybe it's to take a gap year maybe it's to get their foot in the door for trying to achieve greater things within China or Asia. But a soulless ESL mill for the sole purpose of making money? That's an absolutely terrible idea... If you want to make money at a universty and are concerned about the cost just stand outside some public schools and hand your wechat ID to parents. You can teach them privately 1 on 1 for an hour and make 200-400 RMB. You might think it's illegal but no one is going to give a shit. If you're really concerned just only accept cash transactions - the foreigners who get caught are those who work in training centres illegally and take electronic transfers of money.

我非常吃惊的是很多人给出了很多建议却唯独没有提到这点。是，有很多没有任何工作经验的大学生想来中国积累经验。也许是为了学习语言，也许是为了体验一次间隔年，也许是为了今后在中国或亚洲能实现更大的目标而踏出一步而已。但只为了赚钱，而在压榨人的黑心ESL语言学校工作，这绝对是个可怕的主意...如果你想在一所大学里赚钱并且担心（工资）费用问题，你可以站在一些公立学校的门口，把你的微信号给那些父母们。你可以通过做1对1的私教，每小时赚取200-400元。你可能会觉得这样做不合法，但是没人会瞎BB。如果你真的担心，可以只接受现金交易。那些被抓起来的都是在培训中心非法工作或者接受电子转账的外国人。

For newbies out there how do you find a job at a university? Won't they be more competitive? Well it's a little bit more complex than just going through a recruiter and sending off your resume but still not hard at all. Just go to wikipedia find a list of Chinese cities and have a good idea of what region you're interested in. Find that city's wikipedia page and it should list a number of universities. You can easily find their website using their wikipedia page and should be able to navigate to their international office. Look for any kind of email that is associated with that and simply send them an email asking where you can send your resume since you're interested in working there... Do this en mass. As long as you have a degree are over 22 and a TEFL certificate/2 years of experience 99% of tier 3 universities will be willing to hire you on the spot due to the lack of foreign teachers.

对一个刚到的新手来说如何在大学找到一份工作呢？难道竞争不会更激烈么？虽然比面对招聘人员以及发送简历要复杂一些，但是其实一点也不难。去维基找一份中国城市的列表，选出你所感兴趣的地区，找出那个城市在维基的页面，里面有那座城市所有大学的清单列表。你可以通过他们的维基页面，很容易地找到学校的网站，里面可以导航到他们的国际办公室。去寻找任何和这有关的邮件地址，然后简单发送一封邮件给他们，告知你想在这里工作，询问简历的发送地址...大量像这样去做。只要你超过22岁并且拥有学位和TEFL证书/2年经验，99%的3级城市的学校会非常愿意雇佣你，因为他们缺少外教。

That's not to say that all training centres will be bad - some a lot even will be absolutely fantastic with great pay. But it's still going to look trash on a resume. At least having some university teaching experience is going to mean something - especially if you want to continue to be a teacher. But do not just look at the pay... You will hate this place for it. You will hate the employer that is trying to screw you every step of the way. You will hate being a dancing monkey. You will hate working 40+ hours a week in shit conditions(don't even get me started on most training centres not having AC or a heater). You will probably just be jealous when you meet university teachers in your city who teach for as low as 8 hours a week.

也并不是说所有的培训机构都不好，有很多就非常好且薪水高，但是（在培训机构工作过）的经验对你的简历并不是很有帮助。至少在大学教过书的工作经验还是有一些意义的——特别是如果你想继续做老师的话。但是千万不要只盯着薪水...你会因此而讨厌这个地方，你会讨厌想要阻止你的雇主，你会讨厌做一只跳舞的猴子，你会讨厌在糟糕的环境里每周工作超过40小时（别让我开始吐槽很多培训中心里都没有空调或者取暖器这种事）。你很可能会嫉妒那些你碰到的同城的，每周工作少于8小时的大学老师。

Universities are absolute shit salaries but you are getting students who at least made some kind of gaokao cut you will have lots of free time to make more money (generally by temping at soulless English mills) or explore the area you can make friends with the students and will have no expenses beyond food. If you are in your early 20s you should do this. Be prepared to make your own curriculum with no provided materials though.

Even private lessons aren't safe these days. I just found out that the government are handing out slips in public schools asking for details of private tutors and schools; location how much you are paying name address and time.
I'm in a tiny city you'd never expect this to happen in. Shit is really really dire.

As a university English teacher myself I would agree it's a better deal than most language school gigs. That said "soulless ESL mills" is an awfully broad generalization. Some of the training centers are better than others and jobs there are often more plentiful than university jobs. Language schools can be a reasonable choice for people looking for a place to start or for those who just want a spend a year or two in China for the experience (maybe before pursuing a teaching career back home).

I would definitely second though the point about steering clear of any outfit that isn't strict about the work visa rules including the TEFL certificate or 2 years' experience. It used to be quite common for people to get away with flouting the rules but nowadays the authorities are enforcing them more strictly. If anyone tells you you can work on a tourist visa - run.

我会第二次提醒大家的是，要避开那些不要求求职者有工作签证包括有TEFL证书或者2年工作经验这种的培训机构。过去人们钻规定的空子是非常普遍的，但是现在官方执行更加严格，如果有人告诉你可以用旅游签证工作——赶紧跑。

If you're thinking about language school jobs the big chains may be your best bet for having their ducks in a row with regard to the formalities even if they seem a bit soulless.

Also you can just get a job at a Chinese university and then work part time at one of the soulless ESL mills. You will make more per hour than their indentured Laowai.

If you don't mind the prospect of being deported that is. OP also mentioned this in his post.
When crackdowns happen in cities the illegal part timers working in training centres are the first to go. They're guaranteed to be there they can be discovered by no more than a PSB officer asking a student if anyone works part time at the centre and they're the easiest possible scapegoat. Basically "deport me" on a platter.

Private tutoring is the only safe way of working illegally. People do get caught but only in very severe crackdowns like in Xiamen last year.

Agreed I wouldn't suggest working part time at a private ESL mill. Most people don't get caught but all it takes is for one government official to come to your city and a police officer to give a shit. You'll get fucked.

EDIT: I know of one foreigner who runs a minischool out of his apartment. He pays off the building manager 3000 RMB a month to keep his mouth shut. Basically he invites like 5-6 kids over at a time and makes 200 RMB from each kid for one hour of teaching... Making absolute bank and it's all untaxed.

另注：我知道一个在自己公寓里开办一所小型学校（补习班）的外国人。他每月付给房东3000元的封口费。基本上，他一次会招5-6个孩子，教一个孩子每小时赚200元.....超级赚钱，而且所有收入都免税。

Worth mentioning this moonlighting is only illegal if your contracted employer forbids it.

It's illegal regardless of your contract and also if your contract mentions that you can moonlight. You can only work for the one company your residence permit and work permit are registered too.

I don't know the exact legalities but many universities allow it and some even encourage it.

My understanding is that you're only permitted to work for the organisation that provides your FEC.

Just get the work visa with a public school ideally and you'll be teaching during work hours then during out of school hours you can just do privates at their house and just be careful. But some people even gonna say thats reckless.....

So I am a 22 year old(the target market as highlighted by OP) wanting to move to China with the intention of learning mandarin and experiencing Chinese culture.
Whilst there I am doing my second degree through my countries part time university(university of South Africa). I also have the oppurtunity at the end of that degree (3 years) to work in Beijing for a South African based procurement company.

TLDR: where would one look for a better paying oppurtunity not a university but still an esl school?

I've worked at an ESL school and it was absolutely hell. Honestly just do the University and find a couple private students on the side.
