Luka Magnotta won’t be coming out of jail after a decade. He is serving a life sentence. He can apply for parole after 25 years so he has a tiny chance of getting out in 2039. Given the nature of his crimes I doubt he will ever live outside a prison again.

I miss walking around late at night in Chengdu. I worked in the N.W. EPZ area where Foxconn & Intell are located…I lived in the south near the Global Center.
A very lovely time I spent there I personally never had a problem over the course of the four years I was there…but I do recall hearing of the rape and murder of a Foxconn employee walking home from work…however I do agree that was an extremely rare event in your otherwise wonderful city.

I guess it depends what you think “safe” is. I'd argue that there is much less chance of violent crime in China but the danger of being injured by a car or other accident is quite great. If that happened in Canada you would have people rushing to help you and get you to a hospital as fast as possible. Were you to be injured in China you'd be lucky to get help and then you'd still have a long wait while the ambulance struggled with traffic there and back and the hospital sorted payment.

I was a police officer in Canada and went to China in 2001 to study Chinese police training and ended up living in China for about seven years. I assure you that the Canadian crime rate is much much higher than China. China along with Singapore has probably the lowest crime rate in the world.

i lived in Toronto Canada for . I have lived in China now for the past 16 months. I feel so much safer here in Shanghai than I ever did in Canada.

I agree with Brian Cox that crime levels in China are low and the same is true of Singapore and Malaysia. In fact it’s probably fair to say the same of Japan and Korea. I’m from the UK and while I would not call the UK especially dangerous However there is a lot more obvious petty crime. Petty drug dealing drug consumption drunkenness and drink related violence. I would say that the UK has less burglary but I say this only because in the UK everyone leaves their windows open when the weather is hot and there are no bars on the windows whereas in China sometimes people put bars on their windows even on the tenth floor! My Chinese front door is very heavily constructed. In the UK these are quite flimsy. Also in China everyone seems to live in a gated community of some kind complete with security guards cameras and the like. This kind of thing is very rare in the UK and I imagine that’s the same in Canada.
The things that feel dangerous in China are things like the water the food supply air pollution and traffic.

Why would you look at such photos? In my country the press are prohibited from showing gore.
Anyway my new home Shanghai feels much safer than anywhere in my old home the UK.

Deterrence may have more than one side; “Research to date generally indicates that increases in the certainty of punishment as opposed to the severity of punishment are more likely to produce deterrent benefits.” Of this I know little about how it works in China and it could be regarded in its western perspective and the site of the report probably in favour of the view that they present. http://www.sentencingproject.org...
Deterrence (legal) - Wikipedia

Totally agreee with you. As a foreigner living in Hangzhou I can testify to the fact that China is one of the safest places to live and work in.Crime rate Is almost non-existant(at least from my perspective).
