NEW DELHI (AP) — Chaotic scenes played out across India on Saturday with long lines growing even longer and scuffles breaking out as millions of anxious people tried to change old currency notes that became worthless days earlier when the government demonetized high-value bills.

On Tuesday India's government made a surprise announcement that all 500- and 1000-rupee notes had no cash value in an effort to tackle corruption and tax evasion.

A very bold move by Prime Minister Modi. Excellent job. It came very very late after independence. Billions of rupees have already left the country after independence and under vicious previous Congress era. People were buying homes with huge cash on the spot money was thrown on lavish weddings parties vacations. Politicians from every part of the country living like king as if today will never end. Business people Politicians movie stars among all others never asked " how much" they just point at the item and buy it. It was becoming a cold day in hell for India. There were 3 kind of people - filthy rich middle class and poverty stricken living in India. Amazing that China had similar kind of structure before Mao's communist took over and Indians were asking for the same to happen there. People had so much money that there was nothing available to buy because what ever for sale is already sold. These Indian people started buying properties antiques yatch 2nd or 3rd homes in Dubai Singapore London other European countries. So much money left the country. A bolder has fallen on people and if their holding is not banked by Dec 31 they will loose and if they try to deposit will be recorded. India had a big shortage of currency circulation because these evil people were holding them. After this billions of Rupees will be available to lend by the banks for the development of nation and future will be good for Indians as more money will be available and these hoarders are now fear that currency can change again. Long Live Mr Modi. Toda'ys inconvenience is a path to tomorrows comfort.

If they don't have enough paper bills to cover the currency they are asking back. Then the economy is going to tank. I know what they want the government is asking to return the paper currency and want to deposit it in to an account. The people fear there will be a shortage of the paper money. That is the conflict right there. There IS not enough paper stuff in ANY world banking system.

If this doesnt drive home the dangers of fiat paper currencies nothing will. The fact that the government or a central bank can declare your hard earned money worthless overnight is wrong. This is why gold is money and paper is not...its impossible to declare gold has no value because it always has and always will.
