Hunter Taylor Veni Vidi Vici
upxed Jan 3
1、Arm bracers. Literally every movie/show/game wants to show every single roman having these stupid things especially legionaries. As a matter of fact there's no evidence of them wearing them to battle.

2、All gladiator fights were fights to the death (and all Romans loved watching it.) Yes gladiator fights were very bloody and gory but gladiators were rarely killed. A gladiator was outfitted and supplied by a rich roman and they were typically slaves. A gladiator was a huge investment as the special weapons and armors were expensive—if you wanted them to pay off. In fact gladiators were eventually forced to blunt their weapons as to keep them “safe.” The idea all romans enjoyed the sport and as a result were barbaric is also stupid. Many people watch violent movies and stuff like that all the time. Cicero a very famous and influential politician in the late republic despised the sport in fact.

3、The Roman Empire fell because of lead pipes. Although it may have some sort of correlation to a handful of emperors going insane it is not why Rome fell. The romans fell from the ottomans in 1453. What? You mean the western Roman Empire? Very well. The west fell from serious corruption terrible emperors barbarian invasions celts chewing away land civil war in a way Christianity the Hunnic invasion and some occasional betrayal from the east. Not lead pipes. In fact they're safe as long as the water doesn't corrode the lead.

4、Romans got into testudo formation when being attacked. Movies keep constantly making it seem as if romans got in a huge testudo formation when preparing for an enemy charge (and sometimes when charging.) Testudo was used as a defensive formation to protect against projectiles. Testudo was not as effective at defending against a charge as one may think. In fact a well disciplined line of legionaries could hold off a charge from everything short of very heavy cavalry and shock cavalry. In fact use of the pilum was effective against charging enemy units as most had only a shield for defense.

As with many cultures a person’s quality of life depended in many ways on their rank within the social structure.
Two Romans living at the same time in the same city could have very different lives.
Rich…
For wealthy Romans life was good. They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome away from the noise and the smell. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings surrounded by servants and slaves to cater to their every desire. Many would hold exclusive dinner parties and serve their guests the exotic dishes of the day.

…and poor
Poorer Romans however could only dream of such a life. Sweating it out in the city they lived in shabby squalid houses that could collapse or burn at any moment. If times were hard they might abandon newborn babies to the streets hoping that someone else would take them in as a servant or slave. Poor in wealth but strong in numbers they were the Roman mob who relaxed in front of the popular entertainment of the time – chariot races between opposing teams or gladiators fighting for their life fame and fortune.
Although their lives may have been different they did have some things in common. In any Roman family life the head of the household was a man. Although his wife looked after the household he controlled it. He alone could own property. Only he decided the fate of his children and who they would marry.

Shared rituals
There were other traditions that all Romans shared. Whatever their individual circumstances all Romans observed certain practices at dinner time the main meal of the day. Although they might eat very different food they ate it in roughly the same way.
And Romans of all classes made a point of visiting the baths after work each day. There they would mix freely with their fellow citizens exercising washing and chatting. To citizens the baths made them feel superior to the rest of the world – they made them feel Roman.

That gladiators were super-ripped with fabulous abs. They were in fact on the chubby side.

This is due to what Hunter Taylor mentioned gladiators were a huge investment and you needed them alive. A layer of fat added protection and allowed for superficial wounds that looked cool and made the fight properly bloody. Without this extra padding a cut would easily damage the muscles and sinews crippling the gladiator and making him unable to fight again.

Hence I can properly claim that I’m built like a gladiator.

Romans were the victors. History is written by the victors.
1、Catalina’s Conspiracy- We are told what he did is wrong but we never read him speak.
2、There were around 2000 European tribes. They were all labeled “barbarians” and today we say Europe had no culture.
Especially by the time of Augustine the Roman Empire was only pretending to uphold the law.

The myth that during his military campaign in Gaul Ceasar's legions were conquering some primitive tribesmen in an attempt to reduce the threat of a barbarian invasion by Gauls and did so due to their technical superiority. Pre-Roman Gaul was a wealthy and developped region which was home of some fine art agricultural innovations fortified cities ....but it did not make up a political unx which made it easy for Ceasar to exploit internal conflicts between the Gauls ("Divide et impera!"). Ceasar was basically trying to boost his political carreer and was principally interested in looting and stealing but as always history is told by the victors...

Julius Caesar said in his book The Gallic War that he only invaded Gaul to protect Roman territory and to assist tribes there that had asked for it.
Yeah right. Where have we heard something like that before?

Without doubt the biggest lie was that they brought “civilisation” to the peoples they conquered - as of course the British Empire claimed later.

And the Romans learned a lot from the peoples they conquered particularly the Celts. Their military and agricultural skills were enhanced by what they learned from the Celts

And allied to the above they created the lie that the peoples they conquered were uncivilised cruel and barbaric. To the Celtic peoples of Europe those three adjectives would have fitted the Romans very well!

Apart from all the answers I’ve seen here the biggest lies about the Romans is to do with Latin. Firstly Latin was pronounced differently than we think or so many linguistic experts suspect. For example Caesar’s quote Veni Vidi Vici sounds cool doesn’t it?

Well not when you learn that the V was actually pronounced as a W and the C as a K so the actual pronunciation was Weni Widi Wiki. On that note someone should make a Roman Empire wiki called Vicipedia.

Secondly Greek was spoken more than Latin among the higher ups like Caesar for casual conversation while Latin was used more formally.
