What are the communist countries that exist in the world today?

The following countries are considered communist:
China
Cuba
Vietnam
Laos
North Korea* [1]
I'm not sure about North Korea though, they don't call themselves communists anymore [2] but they do seem to follow some communists ideals. Their political system is pretty complicated so I will leave it up to the reader to decide if they are communists or not. I think they are shifting into a military dictatorship similar of those you had in South America back in the Cold War, but I know very little about North Korean politics to be certain.
https://web.stanford.edu/group/s... is definitely worth checking out if you want to know more about Juche ideology

The only communist thing about China is the name of the ruling party and the lack of democracy. Economically, it's capitalist.
And Vietnam is still ruled by a communist dictatorship, but they seem to be learning about the real world from the Chinese.

An interesting case was Burma, which was both communist AND a military dictatorship (like North Korea, and China in the early days of the party’s rule, and Cambodia in the 70s under Pol Pot). I’m not sure what to call China today; it is constantly evolving. In many ways it is well governed (although the ruling group has too much confidence in American economics). Democracies tend to be rich and poorly governed, as in the US, but maybe that is the point.

I don't think we could really call those countries communist in any meaningful sense beyond their own definitions. I mean, North Korea calls itself the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, does that mean it should be included in a list of democratic countries?

If by "communist" we mean the end point of Karl Marx's "Communist Manifesto", then no country is communist. A completely egalitarian society sees the withering away of the state. At most then, countries such as Cuba or North Korea are adherents to communist ideals but this does not make them "communist countries".

In 2009 North Korea rewrote it’s constitution to change to remove all mentions of socialism or communism from it. They are not communist anymore, and focus more on “military first” ideology and the “Dear Leader”. One official from North Korea said the changes were made because it felt the ideals of communism were “hard to fulfill.” Well I guess North Korea can tell the truth sometimes as that’s basically been the result of every communist country. Eventually it all devolves into a dictatorship and endless tears.

Previous comments are right about how far China is from being communist in real life. Moreover, even formally, China is a socialist, not communist state, according first articles of its Constitution The National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China.

North Korea is not communist, the policy they follow is 'Juche' military first, they took down the large paintings of Karl Marx and Lenin i believe over a decade ago, this is also why the Chinese have been moving away from North Korea.

The ruling party in China is the communist part, but by almost all official accounts China is a socialist country, communism is rarely mentioned.
