WASHINGTON (AP) — Pakistani leaders often wax lyrical about their "sweeter than honey" relations with all-weather friend China. There's no romance about their marriage of convenience with America.

Let's get this straight : every country prioritized its own interests, not just China. US aid to Pakistan is primarily military while Chinese aid is mainly infrastructural and has greater multiplier effect throughout the economy. A successful and prosperous Pakistan with its 200 million population is a captive market for Chinese goods. With Chinese aid, Pakistan can emerge from being an almost failed state to a successful and powerful country within 10 years. It is good to have strong and friendly relations with a powerful neighbour.

The diplomatic relation between China and Pakistan has been unique. It was a member in the US-led "democratic" camp since the 1950s, as against the Soviet-led socialist bloc during the Cold War. But this state of affairs did not seem to unduly affect their cordial relationship. And there was no border clash unlike with India. There seems to be a strong sense of mutual trust. Pakistan also played a crucial role in arranging the 1972 Nixon visit to China which led to normalization of ties between the two countries.

The good news is that if Pakistan becomes unstable and a threat to the world at large (or even a threat as a future market for Chinese goods) then China will stomp on them until they behave. Our policy of asking nicely and being supportive hasn't worked for any of the parties involved.
