WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the U.S.Pacific Command made his first visit on Wednesday to a Japanese radar stationon the edge of the disputed East China Sea that Japan opened last year to theanger of its regional rival China.

美国太平洋司令部司令于周三首次拜访了日本位于东海争议海域的一处雷达站，该设施于去年设立并曾激怒了日本在这一区域的对手中国。

Admiral Harry Harris visited the YonaguniCoast Observation Unit on the southernmost of the Ryukyu Islands at the invitationof the chief of staff of Japan's self-defense force, Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano,the U.S. Pacific Command said.

美国太平洋司令部称，在日本海上幕僚长河野克俊的邀请下，哈里·哈里斯上将拜访了位于琉球群岛最南端的与那国岛观测站。

The visit was the first by either official tothe camp, Pacific Command said in a statement, which added that in discussionsin Tokyo the previous day, the two men stressed the importance of cooperationto address the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missilecapabilities.

太平洋司令部表示，这次拜访于几天前开始和东京方面进行探讨，对双方来说都是首次，两人强调合作面对朝鲜核武和弹道导弹威胁的重要性。

Japan opened the Yonaguni facility last year,giving it a permanent intelligence-gathering post close to Taiwan and a groupof islands disputed by Japan and China. The move drew an angry response fromBeijing, whose help Washington has been soliciting to help rein in North Korea.

日本于去年在与那国岛建立了这一设施，从而在台湾以及中日争议岛屿附近拥有了一处永久性的情报站。这一举动引起了北京方面的愤怒，而华盛顿正试图群求其在遏制朝鲜上提供帮助。

The base is at the western extreme of a stringof Japanese islands in the East China Sea, 90 miles (150 km) south of disputedislands known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.

Japan has been mired in a territorial disputewith China over the East China Sea islands and Beijing has raised concernsamong other neighbors with its assertive claim to most of the adjoining SouthChina Sea.

China has accused Japan of hypocrisy inopening the base while criticizing Beijing's militarization of islands in theSouth China Sea.

The Japanese listening post fits into awider military buildup along the island chain, which stretches 870 miles (1,400km) from the Japanese mainland. Japanese policymakers have said it is part of astrategy to keep China at bay in the Western Pacific as Beijing gains controlof the South China Sea.

Harris' visit comes as China is fuming at thedeployment to South Korea last month of an anti-missile system that Beijingsays damages its national security.

China complains that the radar of the TerminalHigh Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, system can see into its territory. TheUnited States says it is intended purely for defense against North Korea.

These tactics seem so arcane, we have satellites that candetect and see everything just place a few more in to orbit to cover any blindspots and such silly listening posts become less of a political hot button?
