During the recent Democratic presidential debate, Bernie Sanders suggested that Americans “look to countries like Denmark, like Sweden and Norway, and learn from what they have accomplished for their working people.” Hillary Clinton, however, thought the policy solutions would be found closer to home. “We are not Denmark. I love Denmark. We are the United States of America. And it’s our job to rein in the excesses of capitalism so that it doesn’t run amok and doesn’t cause the kind of inequities we’re seeing in our economic system.” Commentators declared that in that moment, Clinton “clearly gained the upper hand” and “walloped” Sanders. But is it really so crazy to suggest that Americans could copy a thing or two from foreign lands?

This sort of thinking does occur on the local scale. But given that we seem to be entering a xenophobic renaissance right now, it would be impossible for foreign ideas to gain acceptance nation wide in the short or medium term.

His xenophobic Renaissance seems to be afflicting the western world in toto moreso than just one nation

Yes. And we must destroy Cathage. It remains the greatest threat to our Republic. Not those Gracchi, not the guys with the armies, Carthage.

Why "lol"? Think of it as the equivalent of funding Social Security. Imagine giving everyone back their SS tax payments. You don't think that would be a good goal/a good use of funds?

Because it's lame. They should use it to fund an open party 24/7/365 for all citizens. Anyone can come and get as drunk or high as they want. The government who did that would be in power for life.

One difference is we have a constitution that imposes some policy choices. For example, we protect free speech to a degree that almost no other country does. But this isn't random, this is due to the First Amendment.
P.S. This is a bit off the subject, but I am so tired of people (like this author) claiming we could greatly reduce gun deaths in this country by emulating Australia. Australia did a mandatory buyback of some rifles and shotguns (NOT pistols). In America, from the most recent FBI data, rifles and shotguns together account for only 4.8% of all murders, or 7% of gun murders. Even if you could wave a magic wand and make all shotguns and rifles disappear (much stronger than what the Aussies did; Australia only bought back about 20% of theirs) there'd be hardly any difference.

I've a friend who had to give up target shooting in Australia because of the new laws -- it was just too expensive to continue (and she was being considered for the national team).
Let's put it this way, we're a nation with a healthy hunting culture. There's no way that a law like this would pass if it meant that people couldn't be able to afford to hunt.

Would you also be fine with imposing a six month probation period on everyone's right to free speech? Maybe we should issue licenses for that, too.
And freedom of religion should only apply to religions approved by the State. It works for communist China, right?
How many of my constitutional rights are you planning to make illegal, sir?
