Passenger threw coins into engine while boarding at Shanghai Pudong to wish for a safe journey

According to passengers, during boarding for China Southern's CZ 380 from Shanghai to Guangzhou early this afternoon, an elderly first class passenger threw a handful of coins into the engine. Apparently, she prefaced it with a prayer for a safe journey. I guess the engine inlet looks like a big wishing well?
Update: Maintenance log for the aircraft now has the most amusingly ridiculous entry ever: "Passenger threw several coins to engine"

This is a classical Chinese fail. If that person had only thrown hot water it would have been good. It proves once more: Hot water is good for your healthy :)

I don't get how that is supposed to work in practice? Even if she's on the tarmac she's still going to be a good distance away from the engines, no? Am I supposed to believe an elderly Chinese woman can throw coins like a baseball pitcher?

It's actually not that far if you're boarding from the stairs, and honestly from my experience, she could have walked right up to it. Photo I took in Guangzhou when they boarded an A380 this way, it's a bit closer on an A320, and the ground staff were just milling about, not really paying much attention.

Welcome to N0nglandia! Western high tech and Chinese backward peasants don't mix well!

Just when you thought Chinese air travelers couldn't get any worse.

Cutest "bad Chinese flyer" story ever. Not entitled, not rude, just from a different time...

Of all my travels in and out of PVG, I have never boarded from the tarmac.

For shorter flights, I rarely get a gate. Always getting bussed out. Overheard an elderly German guy last time: "now I know vy ze flight iz so cheap. Zey bus us half ze way zer"

Common in many airports for budget airlines.

i have boarded several times from the tarmac there

I've had to do it for Japan Airlines too out of PVG, and they're not exactly budget. Getting on their one flight out of SHA is the only way to guarantee boarding by jetbridge.

Does this mean that I soon don't need to take the stairs to board an get off the airplane anymore?

Engine compartment open...why...how
Have any of you ever seen an open hatch to the engine??

80+ years old.. Sure blame anyone that was with her but she should get let off with a warning

I also think this is terribly cute and totally benign. But everyone is saying she's from another time and I don't get that explanation - when she was young there were engines of all sorts and never in history has it been good to throw anything into them.
