President Donald Trump threatened to escalate the trade fight with China into an all-out trade war on Monday, promising to impose massive tariffs on Chinese goods unless Beijing reverses course on its own trade actions.

It also increases the taxes (usually state and local) paid by the consumer. Result: tariffs are massive tax increases. Welcome to the coming recession. There is no other country can replace China's massive manufacturing base in short period of time. So the US consumers have to pay more for those products. When consumers spend less, the economy goes down. When China retaliate against the US by limit the US companies' access to China market, the stock market will tank. Just imagine Apple, Nike, P&G and etc lose 15% of their sales. It is a lose-lose situation.
