What do you think of China's development in the last year?

China’s development over the past year (or 2–3) has been impressive. The country is moving away from a model that places economic growth as the only important thing, and towards a model that emphasises quality of life. This is visible in a lot of ways in Shenzhen (where I used to live), among other places:
Continuous improvement of public space. Over the past 1–2ish years, Shenzhen has seen more parks, more greenways, more bike paths, etc. being built.
More homes being built outside of the city. Many major Chinese cities are surrounded by satellite cities. In the example of Shenzhen, this would include Dongguan (东莞)and Huizhou (惠州). Understanding that property prices in Shenzhen are ludicrously expensive for an average, there is a continued push towards moving people outside of the city to lower-priced housing. The key here is high-speed rail, which can link cities like Dongguan and Huizhou with Shenzhen very easily.
The development of mobile payments and the sharing economy has been incredible. In just the past 1.5ish years, we have seen companies like Mobike and Ofo invade cities with their shared bikes, enabled by the fact that everyone in China uses a smart phone, and most people use smartphones as mobile wallets. This is a new phenomenon still, but we have not seen the end of it, with there being huge potential in China for the sharing economy, enabled by WeChat pay and AliPay.
Over the past year, China has also made big strides with its space program, a topic that I’ve written about extensively for work. China is now probably the second most-capable single space nation (behind only the US, and ahead of any individual EU country). The past year saw China launch a quantum satellite, launch its first high-throughput broadband satellite, and the country’s private space industry is starting to develop. Moving forward, I believe that China will end up being the most powerful space nation from the perspective of governmental capabilities, though the United States will likely see its private space industry continue to innovate rapidly as well, funded by Musk and Bezos.
Some changes over the past year have been a bit concerning, though. We’ve seen more consolidation of power, more CCTV cameras being used, and now things like facial recognition technology becoming more common. As a law-abiding citizen in China, there is still nominally nothing to fear, but this is what we might call a slippery slope towards pure authoritarianism.
With that said, I am still optimistic about China’s future. The country has, over the past few decades, built a diverse and vibrant economy, and we are starting to see China take the lead, or catch up with other countries, in industries such as aerospace, mobile app technology, AI, etc.

Highly impressive:
They have achievements at a much earlier stage of development than countries with similar achievements.
Some of these achievements have already been covered by Blaine Curcio
I will cover the economic side of things:
China has a GDP PPP Per Capita of $18,066 effectively ranking it as one of the “high middle income” countries, a remarkable achievement for a country of 1 billion people.
Infact have a look at this interesting graph:
That shows the performance of various countries between 1980 and 2016, what it tells us is that China was the fastest growing economy ever and the greatest improvement in living standards in those years (EG doesn’t count because all of its wealth goes to its greedy elites thus it has seen no improvement in the living standards of its people).
