Never buy the biggest pack of an item without calculating the price per unit. This is not the first time here in China that I see that the smallest pack is actually the best value.

They sell from the same brand same quality :

900ml Sunflower oil for 9.90
1800ml for 29.80
4000ml for 49.90
5000ml + 700ml for 69.90

See the catch?

I thought: f... you I just buy a couple of the small bottles.

... It's not specific to China I see the same thing often here in Europe. I always look for the price per volume/weight.

I'm glad in the US stores usually display price per unit.

They do it in Europe too but it's written in a really small font next to the much larger item price.

People need their reading glasses for that small stuff.
Or a magnifier.

[–]Monkeyfeng 2
Same in the US.

I've definitely noticed this too and not just at Walmart. It seems to be the same with all different products at all Chinese supermarkets. No use trying to comprehend the logic behind charging more for bulk because there is none.

The logic is pretty simple actually: people assume it's cheaper to buy in bulk and so they grab the biggest ones without checking the price.

There is from their point of view though. Smaller product means you’ll run out sooner and be back into the shop again in a week to replace it where you’ll also more than likely impulse buy a few things. You buy the large tub they may not see you again for 2 months and you do all your local shopping at a different smaller market elsewhere.

Wouldn't people just buy multiples of the small version to equal the volume/mass of the bulk version? That's what I did in China. "Sweet smaller bags of chips are actually cheaper by mass compared to a big bag? Time to diversify and try 5 different flavours." I didn't need another chip run till a week later.

I don't know if this is just messing with consumers or they just don't know or care because buying in bill is still an alien concept to locals.

For the long-lasting necessities everyone buys in bulk. It's the biggest bottle of oil the biggest bag of rice the 20 roll packs of TP and the eggs oh god the eggs...

For fresh produce most people seem happy shopping every day or every other day. Due to the way it's handled and shipped that stuff doesn't last much longer anyway.

Oil and rice I've seen but that's it at least from my (obviously anecodtal) experience. That being said a lot get smaller bags if rice from the area where you scoop it yourself.

You’ve only just learnt this? I’m an old fucker now in my 50’s & I was calculating best value packages in supermarkets for my mother when I was 7-8 years old in my head! (No such thing as calculators in those days lad!). Nice of you to remind people though ;-)

My mom made me do this as a kid too... I just realized though that she works in finance and could probably do the math quicker and faster than me. She probably just wanted me to practice my math skills. Oh mom. What a great lady.
Edit: quicker and faster cause I’m tireder and sleepier. Sorrrry.

Sounds like your Mom was great! A fun way to teaching you maths & how to budget while shopping. Mine was great at budgeting on paper (she always had a shopping list & rarely deviated as we didn’t have much spare cash when I was young). She wasn’t good with mental maths which is where I was useful.

Oh I calculate the prices since I first moved out and had to live on a budget. Back then I even compared prices cross different supermarkets. In the I basically knew all prices of all items that I bought on a regular basis.

This was just too good an example for not mentioning. Also I noticed that most Chinese buy the 4l or 5l

It's a good point I ALWAYS do this. And it's very often cheaper or the same price to buy the smaller packs. At the Walmart near me it costs 3.7 for a can of Watson's soda water or 16.6 for a four pack...

In the US at Walmart they list both the price for the item and price by weight.

They do that at pretty much every supermarket.

Having to pull out my phone to calculate the price per Kg is annoying. It is one thing I appreciate in my homeland the Kg price is always displayed on the shelves for every product so I can choose easily.

It's not like I'm living on budget here but it became a reflex and not being able to check what's best value with a simple eye scan drove me to think "Meh probably could save 30RMB" when I pass the cashier and I don't like that.

Sales tactic around the world: Provide 3 options A B and B+. Eyes move to B+.
Have you used a supermarket before?

> going to the supermarket in 2018
Gee just use jingdong or tianmao chaoshi why are you doing that to yourself. Get these 36 beer can packs of harbin beer delivered really cheap

jingdong doesn't have all items tianmao chaoshi is not cheap and I'm disgusted about their coupon policy (e.g. buy for 99 get 50 off but then most items that qualify are close or even over double the normal price...)

Further the local Walmart sometimes has good french bread and often heavily discounts some overstocked / few pcs left / soon expiring items. 12 yuan for a bottle pretty good Australian Moscato 2 yuan for a big can of German beer 4 yuan for a bottle Soju... This are discounts between 60% and 80% off.

Last but not my son likes to go there...

Walmart would be fine if they turned off that ad the blare on repeat and actually put some of their 100 staff on the till

A lot of that staff isn't actually Walmart staff though. They're sent in by the distributors to nudge shoppers to buy their brands.

Just do what I do next time you take a shit browse tmall compare prices. Take the coupon. You will find valuable shit. Pretty sure that kangaroo wine or w/e is Chinese. I'm sure I saw chinglish on it once.

Yea I used my coupons for the meat and the "if you spend 200 get 50 off" ones or w/e
