SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The central Chinese city of Wuhan has banned the further deployment of shared bikes as it tries to deal with congestion and "chaos" the official Xinhua news agency reported late on Monday.

The number of shared bikes in Wuhan's urban districts is already approaching 700000 far exceeding the city's "carrying capacity" of 400000 with operators such as Ofo and Mobike expanding rapidly since launching in the city at the end of last year Xinhua said citing an official statement.

随着OFO和摩拜等运营商在去年年底开始在武汉运营共享单车服务并展开疯狂扩张，武汉城市地区的共享单车保有量已经接近700000，超过了城市道路可以承受的400000台的范围。新华社引用一份官方申明称。

Shared bikes have become ubiquitous throughout China's major cities with users now able to access an estimated 16 million vehicles nationwide through apps downloaded on their mobile phones according to estimates from the transport ministry.

These bikes are great I use the ofo so easy and convenient. some places they are overcrowded and other places could use more its only a year old invention still working out the kinks but a great idea nonetheless.

I am living in Shanghai and really enjoy those bikes. The main problem I can see here or in other Chinese cities is just how selfish and irresponsible people can be. They just leave the bike literally wherever they stop needing it it can be on the road on the sidewalk in any normally inaccessible place... They won't do the extra effort to park it properly 1or 2 meters further I am not exaggerating it.

Share bike in China is the solutions to reduce pollution less dependent on gas zero Green house gas emissions less traffic jam and it also bring convinience to everyday citizens from point A to B.. to go to work with good exercise even on the way to work .. That is the way to go..

One of the big problems is most of the people who use these bikes do not have enough public respect or decency to park the bike out of hazardous areas and in areas they should not leave them. They just get off and leave them shamelessly any place very very rude and selfish behavior and then use a sad excuse to say that is what the bike companies say to do lazy liars.

Shared bikes are annoying. Can't even walk on the sidewalk anymore and people park them in stupid places. For example right at the bottom of a footbridge people park their bicycle as they don't want to carry it up. I saw one guy get off in the middle of the sidewalk and just park it and leave it. It's just crazy how people have become so self-centered.

Seattle had a bike share that was partially funded by the city it went belly up and the city wasn't about to buy them out to keep the project going. Now there are 3 new bike shares and people are leaving them all over the place. 650k citizens in Seattle cyclists account for maybe 2% of the traffic I can totally understand the city of Wuhan banning bike shares.

I wish they did their research better. One of the major problems is new startups getting venture capital using it to buy a ton of bikes with the promise of adding more opening shop for a week or so then taking the rest of the money and running. This has happened to many times and the bikes are just left in piles after the places close down.

The problem is they need to implement a fee of substantial size if a bike is not returned to a station. Very simple solutions.

"chaos" "safety"???? what the hell does it mean? Ever since China became the Communist country the only mean of transportation for ordinary Chinese people was bicycle until the US and Western countries helped to lift China's society and economy out of darkness when the Cold War ended in 1980. It was a HUGE MISTAKE.

These rental bikes are a fantastic service. Will work itself out as the weak players leave the market. There were too many in Shanghai on Nanjing Lu where they are not needed and just taking up space. But there are not enough where I am at. Request higher seats for taller riders and lower gear ratios for easier pedaling. Don't want a generation to get bad knees.

hahahahhahahha...I knew this would happen. Shared bike users are selfish and inconsiderate of others. They don't care where they leave the bikes and litter streets pavements and communities with broken down and rusting bikes.

If you've been to major cities in China you'll see the traffic congestion on the streets. Some places have more bikes and mopeds than cars. More share bikes will add to worse traffic.
