MEXICO, Sept 7 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 8 struck off the southern coast of Mexico late on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, shaking buildings in the capital city.

People in Mexico City ran out into the streets after the quake struck, a Reuters witness said.

Edit 2: According to a news facebook site two people died when a wall collapsed on them. The facebook is "Alerta Chiapas" in case you want to get a bit better informed. I know it's not really a good source but here it's held as a very useful way to communicate news fast.

Yep I'm from Christchurch, New Zealand where in 2010-2012 we had 7, 500 earthquakes. Many animals were seconds ahead of it actually happening. Dogs, cats, birds. It was eery.

Our capital sits directly on the fault line that makes up our mountain ranges in the south island.
Our building code is very strict due to our seismic activity and a reason nuclear power isn't high on our energy list (we get 90%+ of our energy from renewables anyway and small population).

Massive fires in the PNW.?Here's a picture of The Dalles, Oregon, about 80 miles East of Portland.
Portland was like this a couple days ago before the wind shifted and the heavier smoke blew into The Dalles and Hood River.
