Hello im a student from Norway and next year im going to be an exchange student in china. Do you guys have any tips or advice that you can give me before i go? Im going to try to learn basic mandarin in a year. But im not sure i can do it.

Your personal space will shrink in China. Chinese tolerate much smaller personal space than what's the norm in Norway. You'll be uncomfortable when people get too close to you.

Sort out VPN before leaving. Google translate will work offline if you download it all first. Figure out how to cook food you like using Chinese ingredients. If you want to do any tourism plan well well in advance (a year would not be excessive); if you are on local holidays things will get booked up really really quickly. Try to get some basic Chinese down before you leave people really appreciate it even if you butcher it and will fucking love correcting your pronunciation/grammar (be careful you may end up talking like a peasant). Taxis are the best Chinese lessons you can buy. If you are a coffee drinker bring some with you and if you can find decent coffee in the city expect to pay a premium.

Guangdong is a province and not a city but if you end up going to Guangzhou I can be more specific in my advice as I've spent 4 months studying there. So some pieces of advice:
1.Download Wechat - this is going to be your most used app.
2.Careful with choosing places to eat - never got a food poisoning but once found a cockroach in my dish. In the cheap range muslim places normally have pretty decent food safety.
3.Get a Chinese friend. Otherwise doing stuff like getting a bank card or a SIM card are pretty impossible if you don't really speak Chinese (which you're probably gonna have to do).
4.Eat cheese and dairy while you can you're not gonna get it in China.
5.Morally prepare for people spitting in all the possible places males having horrifyingly long nails and other cultural shock stuff. China has lots of it. Just try to see it as interesting peculiarities.
6.Download a good VPN. That's all I can think of for now. If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to answer them.
