Cause America won’t sell drones to them at this moment.
And this is done with 100% OK from the US government.
So this is the way things are done: The US, having an image to keep, will get into a lot of trouble if it sells things like ICBMs or drones to the Saudis directly. The Israelis, in particular, will be very unhappy. So it says, no Western countries should sell these stuff to the Saudis.
But the Saudis really want these toys. They are willing to pay a very good price for them. So then, the CIA would work with the Chinese to get these toys to the Saudis. Like the last time the CIA arranged the Chinese to sell their ICBMs to the Saudis. Exclusive: CIA Helped Saudis in Secret Chinese Missile Deal

So now the Saudis have something to show. Something they can put in a marble mausoleum and pat it gently once in a while. It does help calming down their jittery nerves. Then the next step is to make it known to the rest of the world that the Saudis already have these toys and if you don’t sell them somebody else will sell them. The noise level of “if we don’t sell somebody else will” is roughly at the same level as the drools of the US France UK etc. over Saudi’s money bag.
Now all the critics will shut up including the Israelis because the reality has changed. The new reality is that the Saudis have them already. Now the US can sell the next batch of ICBMs and drones to the Saudis without all these yelling. Peace at last! Win-win for all!

Walter Finch studied at University of Birmingham Answered Sat
For much of the latter 20th century the economic engine of the capitalist world was Saudi oil fueling American industry. This gave rise to the petrodollar in which all nations of the world needed US dollars in order to buy petroleum products for their economy. It wasn’t a match made in heaven because US and Saudi values are hardly aligned but it was a mutually beneficial deal for the two nations. It bound the two together symbiotically. So naturally KSA would purchase US arms exports for its own military.
But the global economy has moved on. The US shale gas revolution has meant that it imports far less energy from the Middle East and most of what it does import comes from friendly similar and nearby Canada. The Saudi-US relationship has lost its seismic significance. Of course KSA still exports oil which still accounts for 80% of government revenues. But the USA is no longer its number one customer. It’s probably fair to say that Asia now takes that place most likely China (not sure of my specifics). This rebalance entails new economic relations such as purchasing Chinese arms and other exports.
Similarly with King Salman’s visit to Moscow this week KSA has fewer economic incentives to favour the USA. However it should be noted the formal alliance is still in place; American bases still dot KSA and the Arabian peninsula and the kingdom is still a lynchpin in US Middle East strategy and positioning. But the fundamentals that have underpinned this arrangement have shifted. Presumably the facts on the ground will catch up with this reality eventually.

It is better to diversify your suppliers. There is no why. Economists stress the importance of many independent buyers and many independent sellers for a product. In this case however I assume it is because China is the only place it can buy these drones and the technology to go with them. The US has strict sales conditions and Israel will probably not want to sell to any Muslim neighbour.

Plus Chinese drones are ok I guess and let’s not forget much cheaper.
