I was surprised at how wide the roads could be even in Central Moscow. Some of these were built for planes to land during war. Sixteen lanes of traffic jam looks like Diwali from a high rise but not the best thing when you are a part of it.

Some of the metro stations were more beautiful than cathedrals.

I had not lived in a cold country before arriving in Russia. The autumn colors surprised me. I do not miss the Moscow winters but I feel nostalgic about autumns.

Upon my arrival in Sheremetievo airport I took the express train to Moscow. I was sitting next to a russian man with asian features. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure whether Moscow was the very last destination or not and wanted to know how many stops to Moscow.

在抵达谢列梅捷沃机场后，我搭乘特快列车前往莫斯科。我坐在一个有亚洲人特征的俄罗斯人旁。我很紧张，因为我不知道莫斯科是不是这趟车的终点站，同时我也不知道要经过多少站才能到达我的目的地。

I asked the man in a bad russian at the time I didn’t manage well.

于是我用蹩脚的俄语询问那个人，虽然当时我沟通得并不好。

He answered simply with the abrupt face people can have there at first.

一开始他摆出一脸因我突兀询问（而略带提防的神情）语气生硬地回答了我。

Once we arrived in Moscow when the doors of the train opened he offered to carry my suitcase and showed me the way to the subway entrance. It wasn’t his route but he even entered the metro and bought me a ticket !!! He then made sure I understood where to go next asked me if I understood and didn’t want me to pay him back for the fare….

当我们到了莫斯科，列车门打开的时候，他提出可以帮我把我的行李箱拿到地铁的入口处。这很显然并不是他的原计划路线。但他甚至随我一起进了地铁还帮我买了一张地铁票！！！之后他还详细询问确保我明白自己之后要去哪里，且拒绝我给他的地铁票钱……

He waved his hand and left.

之后，他挥了挥手大步离开了。

I was amazed.

我很惊喜又感动。

My very first encounter with a russian there.

I arrived just over five years ago. 
The things that surprised me were:

我五年前到过俄罗斯，那儿让我惊喜的事是：

1.The lack of English. Few people speak or understand it and when I first arrived there were no signs in English anywhere.
This has changed quite a bit over the last years.

1.英语很少见。很少有人会说或能听得懂英语，我刚到那儿的时候，任何地方都看不到英语标识。这点在过去几年里有比较大的改善。

2.The metro. The Moscow metro is pure heaven. It is clean efficient cheap easy to understand the stations are big and some of them look like palaces; complete with chandeliers and fresco’s.
Cities like London New York and Paris could learn a thing or two from the Russians.

2.地铁。莫斯科的地铁完全就是天堂。干净、高效、便宜、（标识或线路图示）易懂、车站宽敞，其中一些车站以枝形吊灯和精美壁画点缀装饰，华美如宫殿。伦敦、纽约、巴黎等城市（的车站）可以向俄罗斯的讨教一二。

3.Bureaucracy. Russians LOVE forms and stamps. Nothing is official if it doesn’t have at least a two page form a signature and a stamp. And do not dare filling out a form in anything else than blue ink!

3.官僚主义。俄罗斯人超爱表格和印章。如果一份文件里的表格不到两页、无签名无印章，那么这份文件就是非官方非正式的文件。而且不能用蓝色墨笔以外颜色的笔填写表格！

I have a work passport medical passport medical insurance card work card migration card registration slip resident slip and a translation of my drivers license. My Dutch drivers license is a simple credit card. The translation is a 15 page notarised document complete with stamps ribbons and signatures…

我的证件有：工作护照，医疗护照，医保卡、工作证、移民证、登记单副本、居留证副本、驾驶执照的翻译件。我的荷兰驾照只是一张简单的信用卡，而驾照的（俄语）翻译件是一个带有印章和签名、绑着（红色）丝带的15页公证文件……

4.Russian people. They may not smile much in public but if you become friends with a Russian you have a true friend. You’re always welcome and they will help you if they can and they are truly hospitable. 

4.俄罗斯人民。在公共场合他们可能有些不苟言笑，但当你们成为朋友时，你会拥有真正的朋友。他们总是欢迎你（的到来），只要他们有能力就会非常乐于帮助你。他们真的是相当好客。

Say about Russians what you will but they are certainly not fake or shallow people.

随你怎么评价（贬低或是赞扬）俄罗斯人，但俄罗斯人他们绝对不是什么虚伪或肤浅的人类。

5.Terrible service. As much as I love Russians they are terrible when it comes to providing service with a smile or even a friendly face.

The lady behind the till the bar your waiter taxi drivers: they all look like you’ve just disturbed them while they were doing something important. It’s almost like sighing and looking annoyed is a job requirement. 

不管是在酒吧、柜台后服务的女士，（你去餐厅时的）服务生还是出租车司机，他们总是带着你似乎打断了他们做什么重要事情的神情。就好像叹气和露出烦扰的神情是工作要求一样。

But once you are recognised as a regular customer (which may take a while) they will suddenly become more friendly and start to smile and even start to ask personal questions. Real questions because Russians do not engage in meaningless small talk. It took months before the lady in my local shop that I visit daily and started smiling and talking to me other than asking “Chto?” (What?).

This year i visited Russia for the first time. A beautiful country one should definitely visit.

今年我第一次去了俄罗斯，这绝对是一个值得一去的美丽国家。

So while travelling from St.Petersberg to Mosow at the Moskovsky railway station i wanted to buy a cup of coffee so went to a store and asked for the coffee.

在我从圣彼得堡到莫斯科旅游的途中，我在莫斯科（圣彼得堡）火车站时想买一杯咖啡，于是去了附近的一家商店。

The lady there gave me the coffee and asked sakhar?

商店的店员给了我咖啡后问“要加糖吗？”

I did’t understand what she was telling.

She asked India? India?

她随后问（你是）印度人？印度的吗？

I was like yes.

我当时的回答说是的。

She said Hindi shakkar Russian sakhar and gave me some sugar sachets.

她说印度语中的“shakkar”用俄语讲是“sakhar（糖）”，然后给了我一包糖块。

I was surprised to know that both the Hindi and Russian word for sugar sound so similar.

我这时才明白，原来印度语和俄罗斯语中糖的发音竟是如此相似。

I traveled to St. Petersburg Russia in May of 2002. I had never traveled to any part of Europe prior to this trip.

1.St. Petersburg is populated by people who look like they could be from Norway Sweden or Finland; lots of blonde hair and blue eyes. I am a student of WWII history and after seeing this was baffled that Adolf Hitler saw these people who look more Aryan than Germans as the untermenschen or subhumans.

1.圣彼得堡的居民看上去像是来自挪威、瑞典或者芬兰；有许多金发碧眼的人。我是一个学习二战历史的学生，让我困惑的是，这些人看起来比德国人更像雅利安人，阿道夫·希特勒（纳粹领袖）却视这些人为劣等民族或非人类。

2.The age of city. St. Petersburg is a very old city and a little dirty but I live in Phoenix AZ essentially a brand new city compared to any in Europe.

5.Very little English is spoken unlike the nearby Scandinavian countries but my friend had several of her Russian friends who knew a little English act as my guides.

6.I rented an inexpensive hotel with a very small room. When turning on the tap water it came out brown. I didn’t see anyone drinking the tap water. Everybody drank bottled water. As soon as I first got to my room my room phone rang. It was a hooker asking if I wanted some fun for $100. I passed. I thought that if I had a hooker come to my room I might be robbed by her and her pimp.

7.People do a lot of walking through the city; not a lot of fat or obese people.

8.I had never ridden a subway in my life so I rode the subway system there. They may have doubled as bomb shelters in WWII (or for the cold war) because it seemed to take forever descending the escalator to reach the subway.

9.I never saw any police. In the subway some young men kept me from following my guide into the subway car so I pushed on of them to move him out of my way so I could enter the car. At this time I lowered my hand and luckily just as my wallet was being lifted out of my front pocket (by one of his partners) it fell to the floor and I was able to retrieve it. They scattered and I never could identify any of them. I was very lucky. They could have beat me up or stabbed me for my wallet but they didn’t.

9.我从没见过警察。在地铁里我被几个年轻人给挡住去路，不能跟随导游进入车厢，所以我用力推他们其中一人让他们让开路，这样我才能上车。就在这时我把手放了下来，幸运的是这时我的钱包刚好被人从前口袋里拿出来（就是我推的那人的同伙干的），（我放下的手）正好把钱包碰落到地上，这样我才把它捡了回来。那些年轻人之后哄散逃走了而我又不能指认他们中的任何一个人。我很幸运。他们本可以殴打或是刺伤我来抢钱包，但他们没有。

10.There are lots of very smart and educated people in Russia but they are greatly underutilized. One of my guides was a 30 something woman who was a chemical engineer by training yet she taught kindergarten. She lived with her young boy and her parents a long subway ride from the city center. We went to her home. It was an old projects like high rise and we rode an old rusty elevator to her floor. Her apartment where she her parents and her son lived was very small and depressing.

10.俄罗斯有很多聪明和受过良好教育的人，但他们的价值却没重视，没能人尽其才。我的一个导游是个30多岁的女性，她曾是一名受过培训的化学工程师，但她现在却在幼儿园任教。她和她年幼的孩子（男孩）及父母居住的地方了离市中心很远，坐地铁很久才能到。我们去过她家。那是幢古老的大楼，我们乘坐老旧的电梯到了她家的楼层。她和她的儿子及父母同住的是一间又小又闷的公寓。

11.There was lots of traffic in the city and the cars used leaded gasoline. I remember the smell of leaded gasoline as a kid.

11.城里交通工具很多，汽车用的都是含铅汽油。我还小的时候就有闻过含铅汽油的味道。

12.This was only about 10 years after the fall of communism and the people seemed to being doing OK… lots of products on the shelves in stores.

13.Being so far north in the month of May the sun didn’t set until around 11 pm so it was still light close to midnight.

14.I tipped generously and waiters were very grateful. When being driven to the airport by my taxi the young driver had to stop to repair a flat tire but luckily I didn’t miss my flight.

15.I had never flown a foreign carrier. I flew a nonstop Lufthansa flight from Phoenix to Frankfurt Germany. Lufthansa had the best airline food I have ever eaten; they were feeding you all the time. And all of the female flight attendants were young and beautiful… I liked that!
