Chinese tourist kills an endangeredbear with a machine gun 'out of curiosity' in Myanmar

AChinese man who killed a caged and endangered black bear with a machine gunclaimed that he did it out of curiosity during a sightseeing tour in Myanmar.

在缅甸观光途中，枪杀关在笼子中的濒危黑熊的中国男子声称，他是出于好奇才这样做的。

The man said he shot the bear dead after having gained permission from thegovernment in Myanmar's Wa State, which borders China, according to BeijingNews.

据北京新闻，当事男子声称他是得到了当地政府的许可才射杀黑熊的，该地区毗邻中国边境。

The man, whose name has not been revealed, also claimed his weapon had beenprovided by the local government.

An expert has identified the bear in the video to be an Asiatic black bear, anendangered animal species.

Theman's shocking behaviour was captured on a video believed to be shot by anothertourist in the same group.

The video became widely shared on Chinese social media on December 27 andsparked controversy.

12月27日，这个视频在中国的社交媒体上广泛传播，引发了巨大争议。

In the video, the man can be heard yelling in a Chinese dialect to the bear,which was kept in a cage: 'I told you not to open your mouth. Do that again andI would make you surrender.'

视频中，该男子用中国方言对着笼子中的熊大喊：“你别给我张嘴，我叫你投降”。

He then gave the bear one shot with the gun and the bear fell to the ground.

The video also showed several bear paws lying on the ground near the cage. Oneman could be seen cutting fur off a dead bear later in the video.

It was initially suggested that the incident occurred in Yunnan Province inChina.

The forest police of Yunnan investigated the allegations and claimed that theman in the video is Chinese but the video was filmed in Myanmar, according toBeijing News.

In an updated report released today by Beijing News, a man from eastern China'sShandong Province claimed responsible for the matter.

He issued a statement in a video filmed outside a police station. The manclaimed that he had just dealt with the matter in the police station.

According to the man, the bear was about to be executed by the local governmentin Wa State of Myanmar after hurting people.

据该男子说，这只熊是伤人后被要被当地政府执行死刑的。

He said he saw the execution and felt 'curious' as a tourist, so he asked if hecould kill the bear. He insisted that he had got permission before shooting thebear dead.

他说他看到了这件事，作为一名游客感到有些“好奇”，因此他询问是否可以射杀这只熊。他坚称在杀熊前得到了许可。

The man also claimed that the criticism on social media had brought trouble tohis life, therefore he would like to provide an explanation.

He said: 'Video [of the shooting] was not allowed to be shared. I don't knowwhich tourist sent the video onto the internet in China. I was condemned by theweb users. I would like to clarify the matter.'

At the end of his statement, the man called on the public to protect animals.He said: 'Take this as a lesson. Protect animals. Start from ourselves.'

It remains unclear whether or not the Chinese authority would bring chargesagainst the man.

Asiatic black bear is also known as moon bear.

The species is listed as Appendix I by the Convention on International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, an international agreement betweengovernments aimed to protect endangered animals and plants.

Appendix I is the highest category for endangered species, and according to theconvention, animals in the category are threatened with extinction.

Dr Robinson said given that the video shows dissected body parts of the bears,illegal trade could be a possible motive.

Dr Robinson added that Animals Asia has worked with the authorities in Chinaand Vietnam to rescue over 600 bears from being illegally traded.
