Are Americans really poor at geography?

Unschooled in geography might be a better way of putting it.
Almost all of schooling that American students currently receive is focused on four things, reading, writing, science, and mathematics. Each student and each school is assessed on the basis of national testing programs that focus on these fields. In the meantime, areas like the arts, geography, civics, economics and history are occasionally or rarely tested.
For me, as a college instructor in international business, I realized early on that most of the incoming students I taught —even those from excellent suburban schools — arrived both economically and geographically illiterate. In addition to the usual problems (confusing Austria and Australia, Slovenia and Slovakia), most students were unaware of much of South and Central America as well as Asia.
Part of the problem stems from the fact that they have spent their lives in a large country that didn’t really offer that many chances to travel to other cultures. It is not unusual to discover Minnesotans, for instance, who have never stepped across the border into either Canada or Mexico, our neighboring countries. In fact, many more Americans measure their sophistication by counting how many of the 50 states they have visited than anything outside the USA.
Were the USA not a global military power, a significant percentage of Americans would have no international experience at all.

Yeah, American youth (18 to 24 years old) are generally geographically illiterate . In a survey, it was found that half could not find New York State on a map of the United States.
48 percent couldn't locate Mississippi on a map of the United States, even though Hurricane Katrina had put this in spotlight in 2005.Many young Americans also lack basic map-reading skills.
If you are unable to believe on this, please visit Young Americans Geographically Illiterate, Survey Suggests
(if they are unable to locate their own cities on map of USA, what can be think about locating Asian countries or cities on map of world by them)

There are 330 million of us, give or take.
For any question of the type “Are Americans [quality]?” the only correct answer is “some are and some are not.”
Personally, geography seems trivially easy. But then I grew up in a family that valued education. I grew up reading encyclopedias and looking at globes of the world. But many Americans don't grow up in such families. But that's true of almost all, if not all, countries: most people in most countries don't evince much interest in education or intellectual inquiry.

I am terrible.
There’s a map that floats around of the world that New Yorkers think exists outside Manhattan.
North of the Bronx is Westchester and then a vast unknown unchartered territory we refer to as “upstate”. Above it is Canada, Maine, possibly other states.
To the left is New Jersey, then the rest of the country, and at the end is California. Then comes Hawaii. Then a vague idea of China, Japan, Viet Nam.
To the South is the coast, and it ends with Florida, and you can skip down to Puerto Rico and somewhere floating near Miami is Cuba.
I am still not good with maps. I never really thought this was important. If I lived in Brazil, I would feel the same way.
I do know all the state capitals. We memorized those in 4th grade. Pierre is the capital of South Dakota. I think most Americans do not know that.
I was in Bonaire once with my daughter to SCUBA dive. This is near Aruba and Curacao. But I’m not sure where those are.
Unless I have to drive there, I leave these matters up to someone else. I am fine with that.

Well, personally, I'm not poor at geography, except maybe the geography of most of Africa, which, for some reason I could never get right, and the former Soviet states which were part of the USSR when I went to school so they didn't even exist. But I digress...
I had many, many geography classes over my years in school. So did my daughter who just graduated last year. However, the quality of education is not the same all over the US. The state sets the rules and not all states teach the same things (pretty crazy, right?).
Not to mention, not everyone really cares about geography being the USA is humongous and a lot of people never get out of their county, much less their state, so they tend to feel that they will never use the information.

Yes though the ones you see on this site know it, the majority can not even recognize the state within their own country.

Sushil Kumar Sompur
Yes, and you can take my word for it. I attest to the fact that a majority of Americans are very very very ….. bad at geography.
Take care and have a lovely day !!!

We cant really group all Americans into one basket. That would be pretty bad generalization. There are many geography scholars who are American.
Some might be weak in geography and some just might be ignorant.

Put it this way: a receptionist at work once asked me, in all earnestness, whether Israel was in South America.
I’m not sure how kids can get through school without geography lessons but that seems to be the norm these days, and as others point out, the US is such a large country that many Americans never travel abroad — I have to fly almost as far to visit LA as I do to visit London.

Yes they are
I’m currently in Chicago on a holiday
The USA is a very big place with a small population and its very very spread out, you can drive for miles before you find simple places like barbers shop, etc
so i think it has more to do with the size of the USA itself , theres almost nothing you wont find here, which is one of the reasons why Americans wont travel.

1.Once worked at a company that was simultaneously setting up factories in Shanghai, Penang Malaysia, and Mexico. I was headed for Penang. In a meeting some not so bright spark looked at me and the guy heading to Shanghai and said, “Oh! You’ll be close to each other!” If 2000 miles was close, then that would be true.
2.When it came time for me to get my W-2, some loon in HR sent it to Penang, China.
3.Upon repatriating to California I was in the market for new carpeting. Visited two stores. At both, the people with who I was dealing attended elementary school in the 1960s, as I did, and certainly had geography in their curriculum. Before repatriating I had been living in Shanghai, and mentioned as much to the sales associates. Both asked me if I spoke Japanese assuming Shanghai was in Japan. Face palm. Both asked, “Are you sure Shanghai isn’t in Japan?”
4.While I was working in Ireland for 2 years, my sister sent Christmas cards. One year the card went to Haiti before getting to me. The next year the card first went to Italy.
