Politicians who became presidents in the recent history seem to have followed the well beaten path:
1.Enlist.  Serving your country plays well in the polls. Also, having served in  the military, you can get great benefits (loans, grants, and outright  tuition payments) that allow you to do the next item on the list.
2.Get  a law degree. Vast majority of elected officials are lawyers for a good  reason: stable high income job that one can amass a lot of savings  required for political life. Going to any of the Ivy League law schools  will also grant you access to powerful alumni network.
3.Marry an intellectual equal in your twenties and stay married. There are very few US Presidents who were single.
4.Ingratiate  yourself with the local political machine. All serious presidential  contenders were community activist at one point. Becoming the local  party's favorite for nomination to smaller office is essential in your  path to the Office of Presidency.
5.Find  a good campaign manager and stick to them. Sometimes your local  political machine will supply this. Many of the recent presidential  candidates seem to have relationships with their campaign manager for  many years, if not decades. A good campaign manager is a student of  human nature. He understands what motivates the base and has a good  command of the voter profile.
6.Select  your home base and learn about the electorate, with a goal of either  running in gubernatorial or senate races in the future. Expect to lose  in the smaller elections until you either learn your electorate or find a  good campaign manager who does.
7.Find  a local issue from which to make a name for yourself as "Champion of  the People" in your smaller office, all the while making links with the  insiders in the home state politics. Kick down some doors. Grease some  palms (no bribery though).
8.Make  some rich friends. Find issues that play well in polls but also opaque  to general public as to why it benefits your rich friends. Rich friends  are necessary in order to fund your political war-chest. There are two  types of rich friends: ones who want to be part of your advisory team  later, and another who want political favor for their industry / niche.  Having that Harvard alumni network sure comes in handy.
9.Now  run as your home state senator / governor. Hopefully you will do well.  If you fail a few times and give up, congratulations on becoming part of  the statistics.
10.Make pretty  speeches at the national conventions and become the IT girl/guy. A fresh  face, a true champion of the disaffected. Make sure you have a  convincing case for your platform.
11.Try  not to show any real emotions. If you are angry, take a deep breath and  talk about how troubled you are for the future of the country. If you  want to yell, speak softly. If you hate someone's guts, talk about how  accomplished they were.
12.Ok, were you successful so far? Hopefully you made enough friends to get this far.
13.Become  your party's favorite by making sure party bosses know your polls are  better than other candidate's polls. This helps when you are close to  the center than other candidates. Hopefully by this time you won your  party's nominations.
14.At  this time, you must be a paragon of democratic virtue compared to your  competitor. If you have any personal failings, or have any candid camera  moments, kiss your presidency good bye.
15.Hopefully  you made it through the gauntlet of American electoral politics and  became the next president of United States. Don't forget to quote this  Quora answer in your memoir if you do become one.

Really?
oh boy…
1.You better be in law school or getting ready for law. 25/ 44 presidents were lawyers.
2.Helps to be a white male, only President Obama doesn’t fit that category.
3.Run for US Senator/ Representative. Sixteen presidents were senators, nineteen were representatives.
4.Be born in one of these states:
Number of presidents: State born in
Four: Massachusetts
Four: New York
Seven: Ohio.
Eight: Virginia.

Tricky.
First off. and bears repeating. President of the United States is a hard job. Hard as it gets. So hard that 4 years of it will turn your black hair white.
Secondly, don't do it for the money. It does not pay well.
Third, you have to accept that half the people in America are going to loudly hate your guts.
From a practical point of view get a good education. Graduate level, possibly in Law since a lot of what the president does deals with the law. Minor in political science and history. Read a lot. Daily newspaper.
Take Debate, study rhetoric. Most of what you do is argue what people should or shouldn't do.
Keep excellent records, especially of your finances.
Avoid associating with stupid people. Be careful who you fool around with. Someday everyone you ever did anything foolish or reckless with will wind up being interviewed. When that happens, admit everything. Nothing good comes from hiding your mistakes, especially if those mistakes have voices of their own.
Consider what you believe in. Research a topic thoroughly before taking a position. When you so, stick to it unless you are proven wrong. Never lie. Never say you never said that. Be willing to compromise.
If your reason to become president is to help as many people as possible, be sure that's the way to do it.
Remember people. Keep a record of who you talk to everyday. An investigator may one day ask you who you had lunch with on April 14th, 30 years ago, a Thursday, and it might be important you know.
Exercise and stay fit. For endurance, not strength. Cardio, running. A term in the military is a good idea. Not too long.
Embrace humility and arrogance. Humility will make people like you. And you have to have a lot of arrogance to think you deserve to be the most powerful person in the world.
Marry well. Have a person in your life you can be with and not be the president.

I would say that your window has already passed unless:
You went to an Ivy League School
You went to an Ivy League Graduate School and
You are exceptionally well connected
OR
Something changes in our political culture that allows those that do not meet the above pre-25 years of age requirements to penetrate the political machine.
If you manage to be in the first category or believe that the second category criteria will be met at some point in the future, your best bet is to fit yourself in with the other common characteristics of presidents:
Male
European American
Wealthy
Protestant Christian
In Good Health
Attractive
Married
Prior leadership or military experience
From an important electoral state (swing state votes get you elected!)
And debate well.
So... I guess I would get rich, get married, get some congressional or military experience and invest in some public speaking classes. Or hope that something changes in our political culture that allows for people not of those characteristics to be elected President.

I also would like to President!
1.Most Presidents have at least some military service. George Washington was a career military officer, Andrew Jackson was a celebrated soldier, Ulysses Grant was a career Army officer, Theodore Roosevelt was an Army Colonel, Dwight Eisenhower was a career Army officer. John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush were all in the Navy during World War II. John McCain was also a Navy man but never became President.
2.Education. Ivy league education isn’t necessary, but most modern Presidents and candidates attended these big schools. The most common college degrees seem to be Political Science, Economics, and other related majors. Many Presidents have law degrees, I’m not sure how many but it’s a pretty big percentage. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama were all lawyers. Although business is a viable career as well. George Bush Sr. and Jr. were oil men, Donald Trump and Mitt Romney are both big business guys.
3.Political career. Most have to start a political career at some point, running for Congress or the Senate or Governor of your home state is a good way to start after establishing some fame and significant wealth and reputation. Then you are clear to announce your candidacy.
4.You need to separate yourself from the competition of your party. I’ll use the GOP as an example because it’s my party. Ronald Reagan was able to get the nomination because he was so hilarious and a great debater. Most of his opponents didn’t have a chance. George Bush used the popularity of Reagan to get the nomination, though he didn’t win a second term. George W Bush focused on bringing integrity back to the White House and working more for the people than Bill Clinton. John McCain wanted to separate himself from his party and often called himself a maverick. Mitt Romney relied on his business and political success in nearly everything to outshine the competition. Donald Trump relied on his brazen personality and utter rejection of political correctness, becoming the most exciting political candidate. Whatever the situation or the past experiences, you need to use that to your advantage.
