In general, Japanese are not so interested in China, except some young people have come to China for better job opportunities.  When looking to travel, they prefer to go to Hawaii, Thailand or Guam.  Next on the list are Europe or America.

In any case, some of the main points from that answer are...
Japanese people feel:
1) it's very good for the Japanese economy that so many Chinese have come to Japan;
2) they're very surprised that the Chinese actually like Japanese culture and people, which is a good thing;
3) they feel the Chinese are very competitive and a bit impatient;
4) they feel Chinese tend to be very loud and noisy;
5) they're amazed how many things they buy when they're here, it's crazy;
6) they don't know why many Chinese don't seem to want to follow rules.  And they say, "why is it that they think money can buy everything, including priviledges?" (This is in response to some Chinese who arrived at a certain fancy restaurant dressed in T-shirts and sandals, and when the restaurant staff tried to turn them away, some of the tourists waved their money in the air, and expected that they would be invited in. Of course they weren't.  In Japan, a rule is a rule.)

1)如此多的中国人来日对日本的经济是有好处的;
3)他们感觉中国人是非常好胜的,并且有点缺少耐心;
4)他们感觉中国人往往很大声和吵闹;
5)他们震惊于中国在这里买了如此多的东西,这太疯狂了;

I think the Japanese try to think of China as a inferior country to Japan because they don't understand moral relativism. They don't think of the differences between Japan and China as mere differences of culture, but always in a comparative way (and of course, Japan will always win the comparison).

For example, Japanese people think of Chinese food as "oily", but they don't accept it as "just different", they think "oily isn't Japanese, so oily is bad".

Or, they think of Chinese people as "loud", and they are brainwashed to think that Japanese people "can't be loud" - and therefore they think of Chinese people being loud not as simply different, but "worse". And I think Europeans and Americans can tell you about Japanese people being loud on their own part - just go to any European sightseeing spot and wait for the group of Japanese tourists making a lot of noise, just like the Chinese.

Japanese people are brainwashed by their education system that only Japan is a first world country in Asia, and all the other countries in Asia are basically primitive and underdeveloped. But they forget how similar Japan and China are, because Japan was a third-world country full of primitives as well until the Western world forced them to adapt to their lifestyle and gave them a lot of potential to become wealthy. Japan would never have risen above 3rd world status on their, like China has managed to do over the last 20 years.

Japanese people are jealous of China's rise, and this expresses itself in them hating or ridiculing China.

China is a country of romantic longing for me.
I’m around forties now, I was watching Chinese romantic programs frequently on television from I was small.
There was a "Godaigo" (the Japanese rock band), and they were singing a song of "西游记ーMagic monkey " .I felt “It’s very cool”.youtube here:Monkey Magic

Also, I remember that the TV program of “Silk Road” did with NHK and it was a little boom in 80’s Japanese society.
When I got a little bigger, I learned "汉诗ーChinese poetry" at school. I was impressed by the incomparable beauty of that character world what never experienced.
Even now I am proud that "汉字ーKanji" are the most beautiful character in the world!!
Then I wached many wonderful Chinese films. I became a fan of Chinese movies.

“Last emperor” by Bernardo Bertolucci,成龙-Jackie Chan, 张 芸谋-Zhang Yimou and 王家卫- Wong Kar Wai movies were all very excellent.(also I figured out such Chinese directors infuluence from the Japanese culture like a K -Pop,I noticed that integrating Japanese influence at a much higher level.)
A Chinese friend of mine was also made at a hotel in Tokyo at a part-time job.we played a parody of politicians of each other, played a jokes at work, went to a hospital when he became sick, we were good friends.

Compared with Korean culture, Korean culture is much modern,sharp and Westernize, Chinese culture has traditional,relaxed sweetness and sentimental feeling for me.
Even above the newspaper and this Quora, there are various political problems between China and Japan, but as an individual one has a sense of affinity and respect.
It is good to have mutual understanding beyond the relationship that reflects the Cold War structure and invisible pressure of Western country,as there are things that are not in each other.

I would split my answer into two sections:
What an average Japanese person thinks about Chinese people/culture
and
What an average Japanese person thinks about the nation-state, the People’s Republic of China.

Others have already talked about some cultural items that Japanese immediately associate with China, much as one would think of hamburgers or non-metric measuring when thinking about the US. This is the sort of thing that most people think about, the small details of cultural differences, when thinking about a foreign culture.

For a deeper look at attitudes toward people and culture, we have also seen some aspects such as mistrust of Chinese people, whether from anti-Japanese riots, criminals in Japan, and a long history of fraudulent Chinese exports. I especially remember the shipments of used chopsticks and pot-stickers filled with minced cardboard rather than meat. These news stories and events have lent to a general distrust of Chinese people, I think.

Even deeper, one must remember that Chinese people are not Japanese people. As such, there will be some vague concept that the Chinese are inferior to Japanese people, mostly within the subconscious. I would refer you to some videos of Japanese people being interviewed on foreigners, available on youtube (especially the That Japanese Man Yuta channel). [As a side note, this tendency is not solely Japanese. We see this in pretty much every society, as a manifestation of the “us vs. them” mentality that is at the heart of societal and cultural distinctions.]

When it comes to the People’s Republic of China, the Japanese will have some negativity due to the Senkaku Islands, tensions over WWII and PM visits to the Yasukuni Shrine (which houses the remains of some war criminals), and remnants of colonial attitudes from the Sino-Japanese Wars.

Having said all of this, most Japanese people, when asked, will not have any conscious or overt negative thoughts about Chinese people, culture, or (to a lesser extent) politics. They are just people, and to some extent, they are united East Asian peoples against the pressures of the West. I definitely wouldn’t worry about my safety were I a Chinese person in Japan, and would certainly be able to establish a group of friends. I hope this helps, and if you need any more clarification, let me know!

What does a group of people think about another group of people? Answer: everything!

Some Japanese don't think much of China (mainly right-wingers).
Some Japanese think China is a powder-keg and will self-destruct or at least fall into civil war (some Japanese have been thinking this for many decades).
Some Japanese like China but worry about the government of China.
Some Japanese love Chinese history and have general positive feelings about the country.
Some Japanese love kung-fu films and think everyone in China is secretly a martial arts master.

And on and on. You will find as many opinions as there are people.

Based on all the Japanese I have talked to in my ten years in country and all I've seen and read, I might offer a general answer is:
Japanese like China and the Chinese people in general (though they think they are often rude/loud/selfish), but aren't so happy about the Chinese government and wish they would stop bringing up WW2 so often* (and suspect the reason they do bring it up so often has more to do with distracting the public from domestic problems than anything else). They worry about pollution from China and complain endlessly about Chinese sand (Asian Dust). They love Chinese food but think it's too oily. They worry about industry jobs leaving this country for that one. They admire traditional Chinese wisdom and everyone knows someone who swears Chinese medicine is much better than Western medicine. They think the language is crazy difficult.

Now note, these are just my ideas as I sum up everything I've heard, read, seen, etc, in my time here. I do not claim to speak for the Japanese themselves nor could I, since (as I mentioned above) everyone has a different opinion and there is no collective single viewpoint.
