Hurts me to say it but in all my years living here locals have been far nicer than the entitled Foreigners I come across.

Just saw a Brit not the first one get into a fight with a cab driver. You would think that the driver tried to overcharge him or something but no. I intervened to mediate the situation and that tool apparently refused to pay the minimum fare (10 RMB) because the course was shorter than 3km. Hey a-hole the fare starts at 10 RMB up to 3km not to be discussed or bargained.

It's amazing how we make up less than 1% of the population and yet I see such despicable individuals every other week.

Most? Eh the ratio is certainly higher than back home but I think most are actually ok. The bad ones though ugh so bad that they make the percentage seem higher.

“locals have been far nicer than the entitled Foreigners I come across.”
Oh shit same experience I've had much better success with Chinese friends than foreign friends here. I still don't get that "you can't make real friends here" bullshit. Hasn't been a fucking problem. My Chinese friends are awesome. The good foreigners awesome too but yeah wooooh I've run into way more bad apples in my foreign friends circle than in my Chinese friends circle. Granted there are good and bad in both.

Oh and the fucking times I've seen this same thing happen. A foreigner automatically assuming he's getting cheated and getting all apoplectic over it. Chill out... a lot of times you are just misinterpreting shit.

Got in a cab once and had to go about 3km. Driver didn't reset the meter started at 36rmb. I start telling him you gotta reset the meter. He's speaking some dialect I can't understand but giving me this dismissive hand wave and a smile. Now I know a fuckton of shitheads that would start losing it at this point and throwing a fit. I decide I'm gonna let this play out. We can have a big fucking debate at the end if something is not on the level but let's see wtf the handwave is about.

We get to the end and he shows me the hand signal for 10. Dude wasn't trying to scam me. He knew it was a short 2 minute ride and was trying to save me a few rmb and pocket a quick 10. Win win. But oh the number of featherweight Tims who think they are King Kong over here and that would go ballistic in these situations... been a lot.

that's a nice story but being distrustful of taxi drivers is both reasonable and wise. Everyone local or foreign has been cheated by a taxi driver before. In your own example the taxi driver was being dishonest but you understand that he was cheating his boss not you. Good for you but should everyone be expected to know that?

I've been cheated by taxi drivers from New York to New Delhi it's not just a China thing. In fact I'd put Shanghai pretty far up in any trustworthy taxi list (Hangzhou BJ not so much). Still being distrustful and attentive is good advice anywhere.

[–]HopfroggUnited States 3
“should everyone be expected to know that?”
No which is why I told the story and said don't immediately assume you are being cheated.
Personally I wish the guy would have reset the meter and did things the honest way. I don't give a shit about the 5 rmb he saved me. But knowing how many hours those guys work and how little they make I'm not going to get on a soapbox with the guy because he pocketed an extra 10 rmb.

At some point stop and think is 10rmb worth having a hissy fit over? Most expats are earning huge money compared to the local counterparts. If someone is scamming me out of a small sum it means more to them than me I pay it and have a chuckle about how cheeky they are.

I have a little mantra for these situations "small victories for small people". It stops me from drop-kicking pushy grandmas at the local grocery store.

I just think the worst thing about a lot of expats here is the dick waving that goes on between them. So many expats are desperate to seen as "The One True Representative" of their country's culture or that their presence here is of more crucial importance than others. And those that learn the lingo can sometimes be obnoxious about it to others who don't yet speak it I saw one white dude sitting at a table full of foreigners absolutely bellowing in Beijing-accented Mandarin the whole time even though this was in Shenzhen and not a single Chinese person in their company.

I've met plenty of friendly and open-minded foreigners and also met plenty of questionable foreigners (some who happen to be teachers.) However one foreigner stuck out in my mind as to how absolutely shitty of a person he is. Story time!

This guy used to work as a journalist from a really high up organization and talks about his high education his many certificates his published articles showing me pictures of himself all over the world and he's talking about all of this... a lot. He loves talking about himself. He's also talking a lot about politics and how black people are disgusting "low class" and have bad English. Yeah you read that right. He also uses "low class" for a lot of other people who are not "cultured" by his standards and he uses that word quite a lot.

Well... Before coming here he met and impregnated a Chinese woman while he was on one of his jobs. From what he said he thought she was "cultured" but when he arrived in China and saw that she wasn't who he thought she was and realized her family was from a "poor background" he was livid. He didn't realize he got chinar'd and oh boy... He got chinar'd BIG TIME. He talked to me about how utterly disgusting his wife's family was and how disgusting she was but he still had a child with her and has been staying here (miserably) for roughly 10 years. This was all from the second time I've met with him and he's blasting all this information about his personal life accomplishments and racism to me. He's not slowing down.

So he's still with his wife and he's talking about all these times he's had sex with many different Chinese girls while married. He says he doesn't love her and the marriage is up because he's there simply for his child which is probably the only good part of his character that I can think of but I'm not confident in saying that. There's this one time he's with a girl and asks her "Why don't you speak English well? It doesn't matter if you live in China. English is a universal language. Everyone should be speaking it!" This is the same guy who refuses to eat Chinese food brags about staying at 5 star hotels and refuses to learn the language and adapt to the culture. Yeah... He's been here for roughly a decade.

He ends up talking to me at a later point about how he's leaving his wife and he's going to marry this other Chinese woman because she is "cultured" compared to many other Chinese women he's met and I'm thinking in the back of my mind: You just like being a miserable fuck. Well... ever since then I've limited my contact with this guy big time.

Sorry if this comes out as venting but this guy is easily one of the most arrogant and bigoted people I've ever met here. There are plenty of open-minded foreigners here but unfortunately you can come across some really disgusting and vile foreigners but it's not just limited to them; this applies to anyone locals AND foreigners. It's best to just stay away from those kind of people for your own benefit.

I've met some amazing and open minded foreigners while living in China. I definitely agree that some of them feel like they are on some high horse because their countries values don't line up with China's (therefore making them feel special or more intelligent).

With that being said I've met some losers in China who wouldn't make it a day in my country and I think they find comfort in being in a place that gives them entitlement good wages and the air of arrogance they don't have back in their native country. I'd say I've met much much more awesome foreigners though. (Guangzhou)

The worst things I have ever heard have come from the mouths of other foreigners. Islamaphobia and racism towards both locals and darker skinned people is way more common than I like. I have heard some offensive things from locals but this has almost always been due to ignorance. My fellow foreigners know the things they say are deeply offensive and hurtful but say them anyways. I am not saying the majority of foreigners are like this but I have had way too many racist encounters with people who should know better. Hearing the n-word or c-word from someone who knows perfectly well the offensiveness of the word is disheartening. This subreddit gives me the same vibes sometimes. I hope we can all improve. This type of behavior is not acceptable.

All racism is due to ignorance. I'm sick of that being used to excuse Chinese racism it is patronising. They are not children they are part of the second largest economy in the world with several ethnic minorities under their heel. Ignorance is not an excuse they have a responsibility to learn that dealing in ethnic stereotypes is wrong.

No Chinese person has ever said the n-word in my company. There are still people here who have never seen or interacted with a foreigner. Six years ago China became the second largest economy eight years it was the third and 30 years ago it was the modern equivalent of Mexico. It's only in the last 30 years that the country has opened up. GDP per capita is still quite low and the population is cut off from the greater internet. Lets not forget that 92% of the population is Han and that number goes even higher if you consider minorities who have become absorbed into Han culture. Any time I have to explain that something they said is racist they apologize for it. This is different from someone who grows up in a multicultural environment where we in taught in school what is wrong.

I can count the foreign friends I have here with one hand. As in people I'd associate with publicly.
I think there's something about China that attracts a mixture of the mentally ill loser and or entitled foreigner to come over here and do despicable things to make us all collectively look bad. Sad thing is I'm pretty sure I used to be one too until I learned to speak Chinese and realised what locals really think about us.

I think when living in a place like China where there's more pressure to look good you have to work hard to maintain people's respect. That's irrespective of what you do individually since the Chinese judge you based on your group.

With that in mind I don't think it's a far cry to say that most foreigners don't work hard to maintain that respect and in fact go out of their way to make make us all look bad. That in turn affects what I can or can't do individually in China.

You can say "oh why do you care so much?" and back home I wouldn't because we are treated as individuals. But in China you aren't an individual. You are always going to be Mr Laowai and that although is a neutral word still has a lot of negative connotations thanks to the work of stupid people that somehow get in here.

To give a crude example because we're laowai were apparently sexual beasts with a huge dick that ladies secretly lust after. So whenever I engage with a female Chinese the relationship will always be frxd in that way because that's what societal narrative has led them to believe. Remember in China you're treated based on your group and not as an individual and therefore when interacting with Chinese females you are always going to be seen as a 'pursuer' of them.

At first it's great but if you're a normal person then after a while you realise it gets tiring. It works greatly to the favour of these losers who can't get laid back home so China is a paradise of  to them. But for normal folk who want genuine relationships and have goals it is very disconcerting to realise how lowly people think about you.

I'm probably gonna get downvoted for saying this (already did on the last comment) but you can't escape this reality of China. The more stupid inept laowai that get into China the more poorly we will be treated by the locals. But the loserish types won't care because it's always better to be in China for them then to be back home. Given the state of this place I think that says a lot.

Edit: truth hurts I know. if downvoting me makes you feel better keep it going!
