My supervisor professor of economy studied at Moscow University when Mao sent his students to Moscow. At that time, in the main university paid a very large stipend of one thousand rubles. These students asked to send 600 rubles to their homeland in China, and currently left only 400 to them. After couple of months they once again asked to reduce the stipend to 200 rubles, but rector refused this request.
Their patriotism, their hard work amazed everybody.

Soviet people trust their government( though they had no choice) but they trusted. The Soviet government decided to sell the country, receive the Nobel Prize and become a billionaire in Europe. Father sold their children into slavery. Gorbachev and Yeltsin was a worthy successor of Lenin, I must admit it.
So In the 90th public and private "russian" media ridiculed China for what it does not want to comply with the requirements of the West. For example the Chinese government has refused to give the independence to Tibet or Xinjiang.
At that time in Russia any revolt against thieves, traitors and foreigners suppressed publicly to show every citizen and the whole world.

Although Yeltsin and Gorbachev destroyed the country and the common people were very, very poor, but the media and the government still think that only if you are fulfilling the requirements of the West, you can become rich. Ordinary people like me or just honest patriots envious of China and the Chinese people, because they have kept the state, which means they have hope.
At that time every patriot called in the media "sick empire sidromom", "Russian fascists", "red-brown scam" and so on. Unbelievable but the words "patriot" or "russian" was considered despicable. Honesty and hard work? Do not make me laugh. "Russian" Security Council Secretary, Mr. Berezovsky said that if a person does not steal or kill, he is just lazy.
And we looked at China, and prayed for the Chinese people. It sounds funny but it's true.

We admire to chinese economical success. While someone make coups pro“european choice” chinese just work and Europe comes to them itself. Earlier everyone was afraid that chinese people will migrate to Siberia massively and as a result they will take it away. But now standard of living in Siberia and China is the same and heat-loving chineses prefer to emigrate in California.
Chinese make chinaphones for us and grow tasty tea. They have ancient and original culture.
Our history is similar. We badly affected by WWII, have ambiguous communistic past, but do not renounce it, we can not build democracy, the West is constantly worried about human rights in our countries. Russian people are creative and chinese people are industrious, together we are a strong bundle.

我们非常钦佩中国经济的成功。虽然有人制造政变亲“欧洲的选择”，中国人只是静静工作，而欧洲自己也会去找他们。早些时候，每个人都担心中国人民会大规模的迁移到西伯利亚，结果导致他们会把那里拿走。但是现在西伯利亚和中国的生活水平是一样的，热爱炎热的中国人更喜欢移民到加利福尼亚去。

I would like to say some warm words to Chinese people.
But first things first - Do not generalize Chinese. They came from different regions with very different level of education and backgrounds, so like any other people you can find totally different individuals.
Anyway, I have about 20 years working with Chinese people and have something to say:
1. Fo years I was thinking I am part of European civilization, but hey I have a lot more in common with Chinese people - family values, view on politics and history, attitude towards personal freedom .... etc.
2. They are a good listeners. At lunch time I am always with Chinese talking about life and everything. They are very easy to talk to.
3. We have similar attitude to what is good and what is bad.
4. Sure, we look different, but if I think we are closer in some fundamental viewpoints on life.

I am russian working in Canada for 20 years as a programmer, worked with lots of Chinese from both Mainland and Hong-Kong, they are different, many Hong-Kong people are completely westernized while mainland Chinese are much more patriotic and many don’t like Canada at all except for money and clean environment. Very stupid and lazy programmers when there is no profit. Pretty smart and hardworking when it comes to getting good profit or their own business.

As for politics and economy… of course all world envies Chinese growth rate but would prefer to avoid state of their ecology. As a Russian I understand that ex-USSR disaster served as a good example of how not to trust West. China developed a very good model of development which Russia should copy where possible and applicable.

In fact, Russia model looks more like Chinese lately: yes, we don’t have Communist Party anymore but it looks like it is getting replaced by people who are mostly from former KGB and military - and they care about future of Russia and people more than about extra dollar or two. Russian and Chinese systems converge: CCP drifts from socialism to state capitalism and Russia drifts from wild capitalism to the same state capitalism. “State capitalism”, I mean something like German or Canadian system with lots of socialism and pretty big taxes, annoying (for business) regulations - but not to the point when any business is impossible.

West (I mean mostly US, Britain and satellites like Canada/Australia) is the main enemy of both Chinese and Russian people. It has nothing to do with political system, democracy, human rights etc. It’s just they want to control everything and benefit from cheap chinese labor and abundant russian natural resources. Stupid Hitler proclaimed this lovely english idea about uber-nations and unter-nations openly and failed, anglo-saxon elite still thinks it is clever enough to rule the World. It’s just they don’t buy slaves in Africa and bring them to work in America anymore, but they still think that they are Masters of Universe.

I afraid that China may underestimate those former slave owners and allow them to corrupt chinese rich people first and then CP. Chinese are getting more and more pragmatic - but dollar is still controlled by US and therefore they can control rich and powerful chinese, some would betray China rather than sacrifice their wealth. I think it could be much safer to develop trade with Russia using RMB and rubles, Russia can provide all kinds of natural resources and help with defense if necessary, China produces all kinds of goods already and not so reliant on western technology anymore. I see some progress with that, for example chinese UnionPay system works in Russia (including Crimea), the Central Bank of Russia has included the Chinese yuan in its reserve currency basket… but all that looks like baby steps, very slow, I guess because both Russian and Chinese banks are afraid of western sanctions.

Both China and Russia are too pragmatic and calculative - and still like american dollars too much, we should accelerate integration and insure that both countries can resist together if necessary. Right now America can do a lot of damage to both our economies. Well, they started from Russia but Chinese trade is also mostly in dollars… China may become their next target.

I love Chinese people and China)  I used to work as an administrator in one of the souvenirs shops in Saint Petersburg last summer. And we had a lot of Chinese customers. But this is not the reason that I love Chinese people)  Due to this work I had great possibilities to communicate with guests from China. They are very humble, love nature, kind and with the great sense of humor )  The only one thing that made communication a little hard at first is that not so many Chinese people know English. But I learned some words and expressions in Chinese and it helped me. But sometimes I had a feeling we understand each other without words)  we sang USSR songs together - it was exciting and funny ) It really surprised me that some Chinese guests knew these songs =)  I wish I could have a possibility to come to China and know this beautiful country better.

Majority of Russians are fond of the Soviet regime so they still feel that China betrayed the ideals of killing millions of innocent people (i.e. communism) by steering its wheel towards the so-hated-by-Russians-West allowing trade, private property and all the bells and whistles of the capitalist state leaving just one archaic but vital direction which is a one-party system. It's a bit strange 'cause Russia supposedly dispraises its communist past but still the overall notion is as such. It looks like Russians are not sure which way to go...

Anyway, Russians understand that China is almost the only one of all 200-something countries (together with odious Venezuela and North Korea - yeah it's a bit funny looking at these "friends" on UN arena) who supports Russia in certain aspects so Russians are delighted about that although Chinese do such things not because they agree with Russians on something but to balance on geopolitical levels and Russians do understand that. So as long as this Chinese balancing between Russia and the World is in place Russians would be content with China and Chinese in general and to show that Russians even sign not that profitable contracts with Chinese (on gas, for example). Also I must add that Russians envy Chinese that their country is progressing economy wise, stability, power and so on, although they would never admit that for Russia is not even close to China in terms of economy and growth whereas having so much natural resources (oil, gas) they should've been in much better shape than China and this fact really hurts Russians (anyway, it's another topic).

Now a bit on personality level what Russians think of Chinese: smart, hardworking, too sly to deal with, hard-to-understand-mentally-wise (it actually relates to all asians). Oh and of course that Chinese copy everything that's good in the world and sell it cheap domestically and abroad.

In my early years, we were laughing of Chinese people. China was associated with those cheap faux leather shoes, where your legs heated to astonishing temperatures during walking, with 100%-unnatural fabric clothes, with brands like Pawasonic and Nitacni, with funny and bright, not overly sophisticated plastic toys. You know, all that 90s atmosphere in Russia has a strong tie in my memory with that type of goods. It was a poor man’s Fate to buy Chinese-made products, so that’s why we, with the rise of our incomes, had immediately switched to Italian, French and American goods.

Considering Chinese people, the ones I met during my journeys, kept to themselves, but tried to blend into other societies (EU, UAE, the States). I never had any incident with some rude Chinese at all. They are pretty different culturally to what I used to think, but overall they are fine.

Well, most of the answers so far were about China, so let me try my luck describing a Russian perception of Chinese people:

+ Extremely goal-oriented
+ No bullshit, always talk business, get straight to the point
+ Very loyal to their country and to their extended family

+ Most Chinese I have dealt with were very smart
+ Man, can they cook!

- Rude and uncultured. Will cut to the front of any queue she/he sees, will make a loud scene if ejected. And don't even get me started on spitting...

- Not trustworthy. Not one bit. Most Chinese I knew will walk away from any deal the second they think it would not bring the expected profit
- Very short-term business thinking. Would do everything for a bit of extra profit right now.
- No empathy. Zero respect for other people's feelings
- Not compassionate to people or animals

Most Russians are in awe of what the Chinese have accomplished, and many admire Chinese work habits and perseverance. But in personal contacts, Russians value trust, empathy and manners a lot. The Chinese, on the other hand, often see Russians as lazy, inept, snobbish and stupid (they are so easy to fool, they must be stupid!) Because of that clash of perceptions, it's difficult for a Russian to do business with the Chinese, and vice versa.

China was never 'an enemy'. Not even during tense relationships between the countries.

Based on what I read online majority of Russians despise Chinese as uncultured and uncivilized copycats that have ruined nature of their country for the economic benefit.
However, at the same time, Russians are jealous and fascinated by the Chinese economic breakthrough, investments and achievement into public infrastructure, globalization, shrewdness, entrepreneurship, pragmatism and workaholism.
Shops for Russians in China:
Geopolitics are secondarily to the opinion of Russians. I can’t really confirm that the majority of Russians consider China an ally or Russia, up until now Chinese had their own independent agenda and fucked Russians over the construction of gas pipelines multiple times.
Despite adherence to Marxism - USSR/Russia and China have not been on the same page. Both countries are practicing state capitalism at the moment but this does not make them friends all by itself.

Domestic russian here.
I think Chinese people are numerous (every russian knows there are lots of them, we even have jokes about it), cunning/wise (in “eastern way”) and hard-working. They are also resilient (russians admire this trait), and they managed to pull their country from a hellhole while we plunged our country in it (i know life inChina in 1950 was far worse than in Russia in 1990-ies). China has hard-working people and (relatively) wise, even-minded government, and that is great. China’s ideal of harmony is also admirable (compare to the US ideal of world domination). China doesn’t use guns and planes and brute force like Russia or US love to do, but that doesn’t mean it is weak or indecisive.

There is also some sort of “old father” feeling. Modern China is like a mighty and successful son of now-frail Russia (USSR). When China was in poverty and devastation, we helped them with engineers and teachers and machines despite also being devastated (“Russian and Chinese are brothers forever” - USSR slogan from 1949). Chinese were wiser, and they didn’t let their country collapse. China is now powerful, and we Russians see a bit of our legacy in it (while main reason was of course Chinese people and government).

Now Russia turns to China once again. While there are fears of crippling annexation of the Far East, i think they are ungrounded. If China is allowed to have a buisness there, why would they do something stupid like invasion? Their mentality differs from American and to some extent Russian, Chinese people don’t value brute military force as Russia and US.

Also Chinese and Russians prefer tea to coffee, and Russia got its tea-drinking culture from China. Tea is great.

So touching while seeing some of the answers on the top… Thank you so much for opening my mind on this point, very much.
I'm Chinese, this question is for Russians more… But I'm just gonna share a small piece from my lovely Russian student.
I have this girl who's learning Chinese and working on the HSK-4 testing with me, her name is Baira and from the city Sochi . She's really nice, after driving her home after class for once, she bought me a beautiful bunch of flowers as present.
We talk about a lot of things about both China and Russia, such as corruption, medical bribery, also hidden rules of the society , unlike other western friends who always show me a compassionate look at the first second, Baira usually understands my points perfectly, and tells me same issues exist in her society too so she knows how that feels, somehow like a tacit understanding between ‘former communist countries’, for she thinks China is already not that communistic either.
I always enjoy talking to her, and that's a big part of the reason, we don't feel difficult and tough when we communicate.

in 1990 it was full of male Russian specialists going to China for development help
I and my friend really enjoyed our seven days on the long ride because they were so entertaining. Naturally, they were drinking more than tea. Tea was hot in the samovar at the end of the carriage to be had at any time. It was the toilet that was scary.
In any case we finally reached the Chinese border at Mongolia. We had a five hour break while the gauge of the rail cars was changed. We all trooped into a big restaurant and had a good Russian meal and bought coffee to take into China for use and sale. The scenery was huge open tundras for days with almost no one.
Then came the Chinese on board a short distance down. Holy moly. A mob got on board. The Russians started telling us that in fact these “yellow hordes “ were going to take over the world and especially Russia. They eyed them with caution. And distaste. The Chinese were oblivious as they were all intent in their pursuit as small traders. They stuffed their compartments practically to their ceilings with Russian goods to sell in China. It was almost comical. They couldn't use their own beds to sleep or sit so they hung out in the corridors. Sad.
Well now it is 2017. All my neighbors in San Francisco are from China. We know them pretty well. Have them run the world? They will. But it won't be fun for the big noses.

Not Russian but lived there for long time.
Chinese people are fine like any other people there pros and cons.
China is great country that developing so fast and Russians are jealous.
At the same time China is the biggest enemy of Russia due to it location, population and demographic factors.

I believe the Russian and the Chinese people know that the end of this quasi-communism experiment-disaster is near. The people in both countries want to move on, even if the government hasn't. They have nothing to be proud of, based on what they did to their own people in the 20th Century, and it isn't starting out much better in the 21st. The only thing that will heal their wounds is a government that is fair and just to it's people; America is the template for that, due to our past successes (not necessarily our current messed-up state of affairs under this president). The thing that works for us is, if the government becomes corrupt, we can just throw the bums out, which we will do again in 2016. I hope that this necessary ingredient will some day occur for both the Russian and Chinese people, but it will likely come at great cost, as in lives lost. Nevertheless, I hope for a true democratic republic for both of them someday, and would gladly welcome their maturation into our equals in a true people's government sense. The alternative will be just a continuation of what has been a long, disastrous road of people in bondage to corrupt, nepotistic-oligarchies.
