With the U.S. economy in its ninth year of expansion employers are fretting about a problem that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago in the aftermath of mass layoffs and the Great Recession: a shortage of workers from unskilled laborers needed to hammer nails to programmers and developers able to build complex software. The unemployment rate is a low 4.1% and probably headed below 4% at some point this year. The Labor Department says there are nearly 6 million unfilled jobs in the U.S. economy close to a record high.

For the first time ever small-business owners said in a monthly survey dating to 1974 that the poor quality of labor is their biggest problem rather than perennial gripes such as taxes weak sales costly health insurance or excessive regulation. In a recent survey of business owners by J.P. Morgan Chase 54% said finding qualified workers would be a “top challenge” in 2018—10 points higher than the portion who felt that way last year.

Economists emphasize that key data doesn’t yet show workers are scarce throughout the economy. Job growth remains strong for instance with employers creating more than 180000 new jobs per month on average since the start of 2017. If workers were scarce everywhere that monthly average would be lower perhaps below 100000. And pay hasn’t risen broadly throughout the economy which is what normally happens when companies run short on staffing.

And anecdotal reports today might be the first real sign of trouble. Today’s hiring difficulties also highlight fissures in the economy and in society more broadly including a failing education system in parts of the country poor policymaking in Washington and even cultural and generational divisions. Such festering problems might finally be causing tangible economic damage.

Workers not surprisingly are more likely to blame employers for problems filling the ranks. In the Yahoo Finance survey conducted Jan. 29-30 51% of business owners and managers said there’s a shortage of workers in their area but only 37% of workers felt that way. Business owners said the main problem is that workers are unqualified. Workers said the biggest problem is companies don’t pay enough. Management and labor always see things differently needless to say a gap that persists even amid low unemployment. (Here are our detailed survey results.)

Policymakers haven’t had much to say about the state of America’s workforce and Congress isn’t seriously considering any legislation that would address the problems employers complain about. But on the front lines there are signs the problem may worsen to the point that it impedes economic growth possibly prompting government action.

Tech companies such as Apple Facebook and Google are expanding in the area and billions of dollars’ worth of new construction projects are underway. Those are all signs the competition for workers will intensify. As problems go it’s a good one to have. But it’s still a problem and it’s getting bigger.

I remember in the 1980's when there was a shortage of computer programmers and corporations instituted internship programs where employees were sent to formal training for 6 months to learn the required skills at the company's expense. I think it's time for corporate America to quit whining and step up to the plate again.

55 years old two degrees in engineering and I worked for Boeing for a decade. Have not been able to get a real job in six years. Recruiters say I have been out of work too long and all engineering has changed since my last lay-off. Others say I transitioned to other work because I did peoples taxes last year or tried my hand at Insurance sales (only work anyone offers is bogus sales jobs).

Just because a job does not require great skill if it is needed the companies will have to learn they will have to pay that to keep the help. In my early years I was doing a basically unskilled job. They had to pay plenty because of rotating shifts and weekend work. I checked into a job that required a skill set and a license by the government. That job paid $ 3 an hour less and no benefits. That was when I was making about $ 10 an hour.

I spent about 25 years as a carpenter -- I learned from the best carpenters I've ever seen and eventually they worked with/for my partner and me during the boom days in LA (1980-1990+).

I found a job posted that was similar to the job I'd been doing for the previous five years. They also wanted a degree i didn't have but I figured I'd apply anyway. It only paid $12/hr. They did a telephone interview and at the end asked where I got my degree. I said I didn't have one and they said they couldn't hire me unless I got the degree. I applied to that job 2 more times over the next 18 months. I guess they would rather the work never get done.

I started working full time at 17. That first job paid $3.35 an hour (mw back then) but it was 45 hours a week (Overtime!) and when we got really busy it was 55 hours a week (More overtime!). It also included basic health insurance one week paid vacation and paid holidays. I was hired to do "grunt work" but after a couple months they started training me to operate equipment and to "do what the company does" (on the job training). By time I was 21 I was making $7.50 an hour which is roughly $18 -$19 an hour today. Where are those jobs today? They are still there...except that money that used to go to workers now goes to investors. Greed has rendered many jobs today not worth having. When you spend decades duing work you should not be surprised when workers finally tell you that you can keep your minimum wage part time jobs.

I am hiring now I am looking for people who have a graduate degree in computer science and have a minimum 10 years of experience in the field already. In addition they must pass a drug test a criminal background check. On top that we will need to interview in person at least 3 people you have worked with in the past 5 years. What's awesome about the free marketplace is that employers are able to up their wages to pull the good employees to them... Instead of offering minimum wages for shoddy workers who will disappoint you can pay them a couple extra dollars to pull in the good labor... It's amazing how the labor pool is shrinking because the good labor is getting snatched up by employers who are willing to pay the extra buck rather than being forced to!

I've quit my last jobs due to poor management. Some issues....sexual harassment overwork discrimination hostile work environment lack of HR and supervision no one listening. I had perfect attendance excellent work always on time great people skills. I wasn't alone either.

As baby boomers retire there are going to be a lot less people in the work force. Especially since Republicans want to cut down on immigration. Good for employees for a change bad for businesses. They will now have to start paying decent wages to keep good employees.

Always had a job and been in management w 10+ yrs of experience. Clients compliment my work. Tried to change to Tech and I have the skills. My pay is like a recent college grad while living expense is now doubled. Sent out 200 resumes no response. A Client of mine have less experience and performs less got a job at Whole Food tech related because she knew someone there. Bottom line IT'S WHO YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF 90% OF THE TIME. Unless you are one of those Wiz kids. SAD TO SAY!

First off there is not a shortage of people. What you have is a shortage of people willing to work hard and a shortage of companies willing to train people. You can fill more of the manual labor jobs if you cut off those taking advantage of government programs as well.
