So reading through this sub a fair amount of people here seem to really not like China. So love it or hate it why did you come to China?

It's a multi-stage story, the one of a guy who didn't feel like going for the quiet easy path, because, hu... listened to Pink Floyd and the Beatles, was reading books, and got a serious case of wanderlust.
Went in 2006 for holidays in Yunnan and a bit of Liaoning. I loved the trekking in Yunnan. I wasn't impressed by Shenyang...
Moved to work in Vietnam, doing research in public university. Good times, but money was short.
Went in holidays in 2009 in Sichuan, Garze district. Loved the trekking / roadtrip. It gave the impression that living in China wasn't a bad idea : not as cool as Vietnam, but more comfortable and more quiet.
Early 2010. No serious funding for me in Vietnam, no academic positions. But in China, there's that post-doc grant, 1 year, 10K RMB/month. I had a research project that meant a lot to me. I got the grant, off to tiers-4 city. I enjoyed it ! And I went back to Vietnam, missing it badly.
Late 2011, back to China, because wasn't happy with the job situation in Vietnam and didn't want to leave Asia yet.
Met my wife, married her, joined a startup... left China in April because I was feeling terrible there.

Work, thought it was on an upward trajectory, had visited multiple times over the last decade and seen progress, wanted to contribute and be part and learn from what was going on here. Already spoke some Chinese and wanted to reach fluency.
The experience was worthwhile for different reasons than I thought. But don't think it's a good place to live or will improve in the near future.

I don't like the negativity on this subreddit either, but check it: the rest of reddit has a shit-ton of subreddits complaining about how people don't like parts of America or make fun of it, often as bitterly and full of hate as the people on /r/China. This is the main China subreddit and despite efforts to compartmentalize topics about China, like the circlejerk subreddits or /r/sino, most of the stuff about China comes here.
Look, life in China is life on hard mode for laowai, sometimes. Naturally, people are going to complain about stuff to a sympathetic audience. It makes them feel better about themselves and their own hate; to know that they're not alone. It veers really close to being a circlejerk but the mods don't do shit apparently so like, it's really like China up in this bitch.
I mean just look at /u/WuQianNian with his bullshit username with his bullshit whining about "wah wah why do we have to say nice things". Of course you don't fucking have to, but does that mean there's only bad things to talk about? Of course, if you do have something positive to say, you get tarred with the epithet wumao and are promptly discredited and mocked.
You want to know why I came to China? Because I fucked up. I suspect there are more people who have fucked up and therefore lash out at China because they're stuck here and it's a constant reminder that they're fuck-ups. I mean, I dig it here most of the time but I don't like everything, but I guess I'm more Chinese than some of these other guys because I just don't give a FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

I came to China for a 2 week holiday and to meet up with a friend who I worked with in the same tech industry. Fast forward 5 years later to today and I'm still here, married and have a child. We're all moving back to Oz within the next year or so and while China can be challenging at times, for the most part I've enjoyed the experience so far.

Originally I was fascinated by ancient China, and I wanted to see modern China for myself. After coming here, I had mixed feelings because I felt like most people don't care at all about the old culture, and only the least meaningful parts of the old culture survived.
I ended up coming back to China because this place is really lively and interesting in many ways. I left my middle class career job to do so, too. I didn't come here by mistake and I've never really regretted it. My salary is 1/3 what it was before, but I don't really give a shit.
Offices are boring. Small cities in America are boring. China is still a place that I can explore. If I get bored with China, then I'll go back to America and pick up my career again (former company said come back anytime).
I'm not as negative as some other posters on this sub because I choose to be here. Anytime I want to leave, I can leave. Every month or so I just consider, "Would I rather continue being in China, or would I find America more interesting?" And I still pick China. Something about being in a very different culture is just fun.

why the fuck is it a requirement to like china or only say nice things about it to live here. anywhere else you go you can voice criticism without getting the stink eye or told to get out, but i guess china is special and exempt from this, having 5000 glorious years of history as it does you see

Change of pace. Never had any real thoughts of staying long term.
OK place to visit, but a life and career? Nope. Even if I made the money I make in the US in China (aka live like the upper 10%) I would not go back.
If you can justify life in China by the money you make there then good for you. But you in 10 years you will be so far behind if you would have stayed home... unless you are just plain useless/have no skill to offer.
