Washington has sent a clear and loud message to China in recent months: you can no longer take the American market for granted. You must develop your own market, so as to balance the trade books. That's why Washington has announced a host of tariffs on products imported from China. This message isn't new. It echoes a similar message America sent to Japan back on September 22, 1985, at the Plaza Accord. That's when the Japanese economy was growing by leaps and bounds by running a big trading surplus with the US. We know what happened in the aftermath of the Plaza Accord. The Japanese economy went on a rollercoaster ride before descending into a prolonged stagnation that has lasted to this day.

Any big companies having factories in China only for the purpose of making more profits due to cheap labor , and don'want to make them in the US and does not want to use US labor , should be taxed to the max . Imported goods coming from stolen intellectual properties from the US made in china should be totally ban . And keep them in china .

The problem with the US economy regarding trade imbalances is that US business and consumers buy cheap foreign products. It was Japan--is now China and SE Asia, then some other country will take it's place. This will continue until the world no longer needs cheap labor or that modernization replaces human workers.

it all comes down to who has more consumer buying power, and the USA still is the clear winner. china has a big population but they are a communist country where wages are dictated by the government and not through competition and free market. they will never have a strong middle class unless they become a free market. and that will only happen if they become a democracy

Its not China that took US market for granted. Its the US consumers that created the demand for US stuff made in China. They are the ones who took China for granted. In manufacturing, US could not compete in costs, efficiency and productivity. With exports totalling $2.3 trillion and China-made goods exported to every corner of the globe, Japan is no comparison both in dollar values and quantities. How much is Japan exporting to the rest of the world - $700 billion ?? As much as what US spent on its military !
