Chinese hotel denies bumping up rates forUS guests by 25 per cent amid trade war

A hotel in the Chinese city of Shenzhen hasdenied a report that it charged US guests an extra 25 per cent amid anescalating trade war between Washington and Beijing.

However, three staff members, who declinedto be identified, said a discriminatory rate policy had indeed been posted atthe hotel as of Thursday but had since been removed.

According to The Global Times, which ispublished by the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily, the Modern ClassicHotel Group had put up a notice at its hotel informing guests of the extracharge.

"The US provoked a trade war; we vowedto accompany it to the end," the notice reportedly read.

The Global Times had cited a spokespersonfor the hotel surnamed Yang, saying the hotel had posted the notice last week.

"We have no idea where this news camefrom," Bai Lulu, a front office manager, told Reuters at the hotel.

"My phone has been ringing off thehook all day today.

"We treat all our guests equally. Wewouldn't charge one type of guest more than another type of guest," theysaid, adding that the hotel did not currently have any American guests.

However, another staff member, declining tobe identified, said there had indeed been notices saying Americans would becharged extra.

"There were ads up yesterday in therestaurant stating Americans would be charged 25 per cent extra. We tookphotos," they said.

The Global Times had cited Yang as sayingtheir boss was "really angry about the endless tariffs the US planned toimpose on China".

But US customers did not display anyparticular reaction to the notice, they added.

"They just paid the 25 per cent higherroom charge without asking anything," the spokesperson said.

People answering the phone on Friday atnumbers on the hotel's website said they were unaware of the policy.

There has been little public evidence todate of anti-American activity in China as the trade dispute has grownincreasingly bitter.

The United States and China each imposed a25 per cent tariff on $US34 billion ($46 billion) worth of the other's goods onJuly 6.

This week, Washington published a new setof proposed tariffs on an additional $US200 billion ($270 billion) worth ofgoods from China, further escalating the conflict.

"Chinese public sentiment towards theUS is becoming more sensitive" after Washington's latest tariff threats, the hawkish tabloid said in its report.

Several sources said China issued strictguidelines to its media barring personal attacks on US President Donald Trumpand limiting open commentary, in an apparent attempt to avoid unintentionalescalation.

Authorities were also censoring potentiallysensitive items on social media such as Weibo, China's Twitter-like service, where trade-related items have been mostly kept off the list of top trendingtopics.

Official Chinese statements this week havetaken a sharper tone, accusing the United States of "bullying" and startingthe trade war.

What's next? Bumping Chinese studentstuition fees in US by 25%?
Now that would hurt, it's not like manyAmerican people go to China anyway (relatively speaking)

toufiinjapan  3 points · 1 day ago
Yeah, we should expect that

It would hurt US universities. It would bean idiotic policy considering foreign students pay a premium to study in theUS. Oddly enough, tuition at most Chinese universities is the same for foreignand domestic students.

A lot come on graduate school visas andhave tuition paid for plus a stipend. I would say the majority are graduatestudents and not undergrads. Caps on these visas would certainly hurt.

I was curious about your assumption, sinceI would have guessed the other way. Turns out there tend to be about equalnumbers of undergrad and graduate international students in the US; both groupsare growing.
This appears to be a website with an agenda, butI assume the raw numbers are close to correct. https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/international-students-united-states
That said, I couldn't find any numbers onfinancial aid for international graduate students. I'd guess it's lower thanfor citizen graduate students, but it would be interesting to see real data.

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/international-students-united-states

They already pay a huge premium to studyalready.

Noooo that would be racist and I canalready see every leftist shaking in their feet screaming racism.

kulio_forever  3 points · 1 day ago
triggered yet again i see

nuultra  2 points · 1 day ago
I mean, it's true isn't? There's alreadycalls of racism for the US military kicking out non-citizens.

ArcboundChampion  3 points · 3 days ago
That’s not what’s happening. Some non-militarycitizens are being de-naturalized. Many military personnel were promisednaturalization, and their proceedings are being artificially delayed and thenthey’re being kicked out. It’s not racism, but it is extraordinarily shittypolicy. Trump going back on a previous administration’s promise (this programextends back to Bush, IIRC) just because he doesn’t like it isn’t news, though.

nuultra  0 points · 3 days ago
I wasn't debating whether the policyreversal is shitty or not though. It is very much is. I'm saying that it is notinherently racist and I've already seen multiple articles written by peoplefoaming in the mouth screaming "muh diversity. trump a racist!!!"

ArcboundChampion  3 points · 3 days ago
Fair enough. Xenophobia and racism kinda gohand-in-hand, though.

If Trump unilaterally says "No moreChinese students allowed in US Universities," China would bow down toanything. Might even stop stealing our technology. Friend of a friend clerksfor a Senator. This is seriously on the table. Could you imagine?

goodluck50  5 points · 1 day ago
Yep, the reason is lots of Chinese studentsstudying in America come from home of communists in the government.

kanada_kid  4 points · 1 day ago
China, Canada, Australia and the UK wouldlove it if the US banned them. Chinese students are money makers abroad forforeign universities and China wants to keep tuhaos in China.

FulltimeHobo  1 point · 1 day ago
The government wouldn’t care, US justhappens to be one of the easiest countries to get student Visa for the averageChinese fuerdai.

Not at all Beijing would love it, its anembarrassment how many kids go to the States.
It would hurt them a bit because you areright they do send people to the States themselves, but from a PR standpoint itsa clear win for Xi.
Also, that won't happen.

They're using Trump tactics against himhaha
"Did you say the thing?"
"No of course not"
"We have you on camera saying thething"
"Fake news"
What's unfortunate is that Trump sycophantslikely aren't the ones who are traveling the world and getting affected bythis. But at least they've been smart about how they target the tariffs. I'mcurrently living in a "socialist hellhole" mostly unaffected by hisidiot trade war.....for now anyway.

i7omahawki  1 point · 3 days ago
Trump sycophants definitely travel / livein China. The majority of Trump supporters I know live in China.

posting_drunk_naked  3 points · 3 days ago
You're getting down voted but now that Ithink about it I actually find it believable. Sort of like how a majority ofTurks not living in Turkey voted Erdogan, they don't have to deal with theconsequences. Trump voters in China get to enjoy the "liberal tears"and memes and Christian nationalist ideological purity without worrying abouthealth care, wages, education and all the other things the Trump administrationis attacking.

I would be more than willing to be this isGT just making shit up. I mean they are propagandists, that's what they do.
If that hotel doesn't have good enoughrelationships, this sort of stuff happens. Its very cannibalistic
