What Is America Doing To China? The Same Things It Did To Japan
Washington has sent a clear and loud message to China in recent months: you can no longer take the American market for granted. You must develop your own market, so as to balance the trade books. That's why Washington has announced a host of tariffs on products imported from China. This message isn't new. It echoes a similar message America sent to Japan back on September 22, 1985, at the Plaza Accord. That's when the Japanese economy was growing by leaps and bounds by running a big trading surplus with the US. We know what happened in the aftermath of the Plaza Accord. The Japanese economy went on a rollercoaster ride before descending into a prolonged stagnation that has lasted to this day.

For now, China wants to show the world that they are strong and better than the United States. That is true for now. America will suffer now, and China will suffer even more. Even a small nation would damage China's economy, let alone with the United States. America economy is greater than China. What would happen to China in a matter of couple of years. Their GDP will fall 5.30 to 3.50. That is a guarantee that China will not survive with trade war. China is bigger then the United States and has 1.4 billion, so their expenditure is much, much greater than America. Lets see the outcome in a year or two.

That article made no sense at all. Manufacturing and labor goes in waves. Mass consumption, mass production. The article misses a major point. The production and innovation moved from Japan over to Korea. In the 1980s everyone bought Sony televisions. Samsung has taken over that market. China is heavily invested in Africa so as the country matures it will be able to provide cheap labor for the next 30 years. China also owns trillions in American debt. When Americans want to pay $15,000 for TV's that's great let's start making TVs back in the United States.

We need to be aware of the habit of Panos Mourdoukoutas for selective reality.
What Mourdoukoutas has failed to mention is that American and non American companies are fighting to get into the consumer market of China. ( Trump and Ross wanted to pry open the Chinese market even more, NOT retreating from it)
What does it mean? Instead of the gloomy picture painted by Mourdoukoutas, they expect explosive growth.
Another SELECTIVE truth Panos Mourdoukoutas practices is this---While his claim that the economic growth rate in China has "slowed" is true, he deliberately avoided mentioning that it is growing at about TWICE the rate of America, at around 6.9%. That is a very healthy growth for the size of an 11.22 trillion economy.
(Panos Mourdoukoutas will tell you( and has done so) that India growth rate is higher. That is correct, at 7% in 2017. But again, he CHEATED by not mentioning the size of Indian economy (USD 2.45 trillion)
Due laziness or selective reporting, Panos Mourdoukoutas has failed to acknowledge that the social safety net, such as social insurance and health insurance are being set up in lightning speed in China.
The service sector is regarded by Western companies as the star in growth, going forward. That was why pharmaceutical and financial CEOs went to a meeting chaired by the president of China a couple days ago.

There’s no fairness, economic Darwinism holds. China can’t compare to Japan, because Japan has been a US colony since 1945. Japan couldn’t mount a fight if it wanted to. Organically China is comparable to the US in terms of landmass & has 4x number of consumer market & it has linked up with neighbors to develop asian economic integration. Japan has always been a island & will continue to be so until it comes to grip with reality & be part of asian community

In true Capitalism prices are determined by makers or business owners,,not government. Tariffs are nothing shy of price fixing by the government. This is going to hit the consumers wallet in the end as all the tariff increases will merely be passed on. Many items China sends here are no longer made in the US so get out the wallet. Its coming. Thanks Donald,, higher prices don't bother billionaires but we will feel the pain from this outrageous economic approach.

Your painting Japan's rise and fall as a story of taking advantage of, and then being shut out of unfair trade with America is kind of pathetic. Here's a better story. The working age population of Japan (15-64) peaked in 1989. After that the working age population declined, the youth population declined, and the elderly (65+) population expanded rapidly before leveling off (not declining). Japan's economy was growing and growing as long as the worker to dependent ratio was getting better. When the demographics started to change and the number of elderly dependents started to move up, the growth is over. When your population of workers drop by 20% and your number of dependents holds steady it's pretty hard to grow your economy.
