Fucking sad. I can’t believe a 29 year old would be taking it out on society via the life of children. Condolences goes out to the families and children at the school. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a classmate so violently while you are in primary school.
I hope everyone on r/China can help to push this to the top. The upvote system is not the same as giving someone a LIKE on social media. We need to upvote this to get more people talking about it.

Both of them are not Chinese citizens. Both of these students are in the PYP class (IB0 diploma class) of that school (WFLPS), which is a class fully consisted of foreign nationality students (not ethnically foreign). Those who can study in that class have an extremely, extremely wealthy family.
It's an incident created by an unemployed, non-Shanghainese person who has sociopathic motive. Instead of motive of xenophobia I'd prefer to say the motive is because of hatred towards the rich.

两人都不是中国公民。两人都是上海市世界外国语小学PYP班的，这个班里都是外国国籍的学生（不是种族上的外国）。能在这个班里学习的学生都是非常富有的。
这个行凶者是一个没有工作的上海外地人，有反社会的动机。我觉得不是因为他排外，而是因为对富人的仇恨。原谅我的语法不好。

If the class is entirely made of ethnically Chinese people with foreign citizenship then the anger was probably directed at wealthy people in general. If the class contains mostly non-ethnically Chinese students then it's a hate crime.
Out of all the schools in Shanghai, the odds of randomly picking one where elite Chinese kids or where foreign kids go are infinitely small.

如果这个班完全是由拥有外国国籍的中国人构成，那么他的愤怒可能是指向富人。如果这个班里的学生大部分都不是中国人，那么应该是仇外。
在上海所有的学校中，随便找一个拥有中国精英孩子或者外国孩子上学的学校可不是那么好找的。

Seems to be entirely made of ethnically Chinese, I checked the PYP section of the school's website and none of these students seems to be ethnically foreign according to pictures they posted about activities (http://www.wflps.com/wflps/pages/front/InfoList/InfoListPage.aspx). The foreigners in the picture are faculties.

I heard much the same from Chinese colleagues who were following the story. The man was desperate for money and a job, saw the success of many which drove him insane with jealousy, and now this.

And its only going to get worse, the gap is widening, and the idea of a Chinese dream of getting rich by doing nothing (like sitting on an expensive piece of land the government wants to buy) is over for 99% of the country.

They already have security gates and personnel at every primary school entrance in some cities, now they're going to have to go full military and put armed guards surrounding the gates. The number of school attacks is definitely concerning, and I fear it will only get worse as the economy continues to slow and pay gaps and middle class continues to disappear.
