Luca Yang, Know something about Chinese history
Yes, definitely. The result of the Korean war was the best victory China could expect back in 1950s.
Most answers here assume China could only “win” by uniting the entire Korea. That’s the goal of Kim’s regime, not the goal of PRC (the HQ of PVA ordered the armies to stop advancing under the pressure from Kim, for fear of the inbearable loss). That’s like saying Hitler could only win in the East Front by occupying the entire Russia (no, he just intented to reach Moscow).
The reason why China definitely win the Korea war is that it fulfilled most of its goals, all of which was widely considered unrealistic, even imaginary, before the war, which include:
Prevent the US army from reaching and invading Manchuria, or even trying to overthrow the new communist regime.
Showing to the Soviet unx that China was able to protect Manchuria and support North Korea on her own, therefore preventing Manchuria from being colonized by the Soviet unx (which was probably why Stalin didn’t try to stop USA in the UN).
Showing to the whole world that the newly-born communist China was able to protect itself from the military threat from anywhere, and project serious threat to the neibouring regions, which no Chinese army or government had been able to achieve for a century. As was put forward by Peng De’huai, the commander in chief of PVA:
(The Korea War) proves that, the period that western invader could occupy an entire country simply by deploying some connons on a shore in the east is gone.
From the Korea War on, China could make credible threat to USA, a privilege probably only shared with the Soviet unx. In 1950s, US possibly took the warnings from Beijing asking them to not cross 38 degree line as a joke; however, in 1960s, the similar warning that China would join in the war if USA advanced across 17 degree line in Vietnam was apparently taken seriously.

Well, let's look at human losses first.
180,000 Chinese soldiers killed in Korean War
China lost 180,000 men in Korea according to their own numbers. There are much higher estimates based on different numbers, as many as 600,000 I've seen claimed.
How Many Americans Died In Korea?
The US lost about 37,000 men in Korea. That's fighting both the North Koreans and Chinese troops.
Korean War Fast Facts
North Korea lost MINIMUM 1,000,000 lives including civilians, but I've seen other estimates that claim 20%–30% of the entire population was killed.
Look, in America this would be considered a catastrophic loss if we were China. The current administration would be crucified, their party tarred and feathered and run out of the country. I suppose that's the advantage of state-run media. The only “win” here is that North Korea still existed. America has to maintain public support for a war, otherwise everyone involved will be politically crucified. 37,000 deaths and 68 billion dollars was enough to turn the public against the war.
I call this a stalemate. China and North Korea were willing to sacrifice as many lives as necessary to keep fighting, but they lost far far far more men in doing so. North Korea was devastated, and remains impoverished today. The US and South Korea were not able to accomplish their goal, but I don't think it's fair to claim what was achieved was a win for the Chinese. No one won.
Look, China has easily 4–5 times the population of the US. However, if they lost troops at 10–20 times higher rates, how can you consider this a warning only to the Americans? Surely the Chinese would understand full scale conflict between the two would come at an atrocious human cost, and seek to avoid that as well.

“remains impoverished today”. Remain part is wrong because NK have a better GDP than SK right until Mid 70s.
The famine you see today is because USSR is gone,no cheap fuel to supply NK’s mechanised agriculture
Jeremy Gordon
Having a higher GDP than SK in the 70s does not mean a country was not impoverished then as well. It simply means SK was also impoverished.

That one have Kim to blame. China and USSR even supported coup within NK to make them change, and that was crushed. China and Vietnam are both are both socialist yet living a better life now.

Indisputably. The USSR moved away from Stalinism and prospered. China took a bit longer because they were hardliners. NK never stopped, and they’re in the geopolitical toilet as a result.

No.
The term “Korean War” refers to the one started by North Korea in June 25th, 1950, which bears the war goal of unifying the entire Korean Peninsula. Since China was on North Korea’s side and didn’t achieve that war goal, China did not win Korean War.
However, Korean War was not even the one that China intended to fight. From Chinese perspective, the war it fought was called “抗美援朝,保家卫国”, i.e supporting the North to fight the US and defending China itself. The war goal on the Chinese side was to ensure national security, or you can put it as “to keep a buffer zone between US military bases in South Korea and China itself” (I don’t like to use this term but many people are familiar with that). In this case, China did win the war it intended to fight, but that’s just not Korean War.
Something not related to the topic. I’ve seen many similar topics here on Quora analyzing why China support the North Korea in that war against the “UN forces” and mention “to keep a buffer zone between US military bases in South Korea and China itself”. That seems to be an aggressive act. However, I’ve rarely seen people mentioned that the US Air Force did BOMB Chinese villages in the northeast and caused civilian casualties BEFORE Chinese intervention in North Korea. Not to mention that the 7th Fleet sailed into Taiwan Strait to interfere Chinese civil war in June 27th, 1950, 2 days after North Korea invaded South Korea and way before China even issued a public announcement showing its own attitude toward that war. Both actions are brutal violations of another country’s sovereignty. Therefore, how would you expect China to react regarding Korea? One can even make the argument that it’s the US who dragged China into Korean War.
Ok, so much for the unrelated stuff. We might want to take a look at who won the Korean War.
China, no. Discussed before.
The US? No. As its war goal of letting the South annex the North was not completed.
DPRK? No. It failed its war goal of unifying the South.
ROK? Arguable. Since South Korea didn’t declare war on North Korea first, one can argue that its war goal was to survive and it did survive with the help of the US. However, the South also had its “北进统一”(advance north and unify the country) strategy and it did advance north above the 38 degree line before other UN forces after Inchon, we can also argue that its war goal of unifying the peninsula was not fulfilled.
USSR? Yes. Through Korean War, much of attention of the US was dragged towards Northeast Asia while the Soviet gained a strategic balance in Europe very soon. By wasting US resources in a meaningless war, it soon caught up with the US in military technology and successfully healed its wound of WWII. It also pulled China into its military alliance by providing nuclear protection and resulted in a ten-year Soviet-China honeymoon period.
So the answer is somewhat surprising. Who won the Korean War? the Soviets.
Joshua Field, Studied in the US
Tactically speaking, it was a draw. They did save Kim’s regime, but they couldn’t unite both Koreas.
Strategically speaking (both in short and long term) it was a victory and a rather important one. No, I’m not talking about the buffer zones. No, I’m not talking about the preservation of North Korea. I’m talking about how the world perceives her before and after the war. Before the war, the Chinese soldiers were known as laundrymen. After the war, the world had no choice but to recognize China as a formidale foe you don’t want to mess with without thinking twice. During operation Rolling Thunder, President Johnson didn’t ask the Air Force to create a 40 km buffer zone just for fun you know?
But that’s not the biggest reason why China won. The biggest prize China got is the key to defeat the American military (or at least how not lose to them). After the battle of Pork Chop hills, it was obvious to the whole world that the US can’t afford to lose its personnal. If the war drags on for too long, the army will collapse under the political pressure that’s coming from the White House. Therefore, it you have a lot of soldiers and can afford attrition, you can win a war against the US. It may take years or even decades, but you will eventually win. This discovery will pass on to the Viet Cong and cost the US their War in Vietnam. Even today, the US military still haven’t really found a solution to this problem, other than “finish the war as quickly as possible”.

China didn’t win the Korean War because that was not its goal.
Though we don’t really know what China’s goals were in the war, I believe it was basically to push back what was seen as an advancing UN force that had no clear obxtive except ‘pushing the Communist invasion back’.
McArthur’s view that nuking China is the only option available basically showed just how far and insane his mind went in trying to beat the Communist threat.
China then and now, requires a buffer zone wherever it can have one, from a possible invasion. It beat the Soviets and the Indians in order to ensure a status-quo. The US is far away but South Korea and Japan are seen as possible encroachment by the US into the Chinese sphere of influence.
TLDR: China went to war to repel what it saw as American aggression that was about to drip into its territory. It succeeded in doing so - but China was never going to ‘win the war’ for North Korea, so no, it did not win the Korean War.
David Ecale, I've read quite a bit, but my specialty is WW1.
Gwydion Madawc Williams has the basics & the Yes & No answers are probably all correct. Please let me explain:
China sent several Infantry Divisions into North Korea (NK). They devastated the US/UN forces (and were pretty much annihilated in the process). The Chinese & Russian (Russian mostly as MiG pilots) forced an ultimate stalemate pretty close to the original borders. So, yes, they won a (qualified) victory.
Fast forward to the Communist re-revolution (It’s OK to be a Communist, but it’s even better to be a RICH one) when Deng Xiaoping took over. Now something terrible occurred. NK kept to the hard line Stalinist philosophy, but China? She started to change.
Now to the present. China is stuck with crowds of refugees from NK. It has to support the Regime due to former commitments. If it could just cut it off with a saw & let it sink into the Sea of Japan, it would be overjoyed!
So, the great victory of 1954 has turned into the great liability of 2014 & beyond.
China won & in the process, ultimately lost!
DISCLAIMER: That’s My Two Cents!
Gwydion Madawc Williams
Gwydion Madawc Williams, Know a lot of military history
Yes.
They broadly restored North Korea, which had been on the verge of being destroyed when they stepped in.
They inflicted many defeats on US and European armies before the line was stabilised again.
They showed that it would be extremely expensive for the USA to try interfering in China.
A limited but considerable victory.

Different country have their different target in this war.
The war target of China: stop US amry invasion and protect DPRK,make sure the safe of the northeast of China.China complete the mission,so Chinese believe they win the war.You can see the Korean war are called in China as"the war of anti American and help DPRK"
The war target of north Korea: Unified Korea, and destroy the south Korea govern. So north Korea lose in this war.
The war target of US army and south Korea: to stop north Korea invasion and unified Korea. So they win in stopping invasion but lose in the Unification War.

The Korean war gives the CPC the legitimacy to rule China since after 1840 China never won a war of significance and USA was leading a army of United Nation! It is the Korean War that set the foundation of PRC firmed in the ground since maybe the intellectualls still did not like CPC, but at least it can defend the China if necessary.
This point can be very clearly proved by the fact that after 1950 more young educated Chinese flocked back to PRC, among whom Qian Xuesen 钱学森 was the most famous.
Mao once said US army cannot beat PLA if the equipment are the same because US army relies on advanced equipment too much!

To clarify who is the winner, we have to know what are the purpose of each participants.
Actually there were two wars.
First one is that the North invaded the South. Defeated by US. China has no business in this war.
Second one is tha USA pushed beyond the 38’ line and wanted to wipe out DPRK. (China warned USA that it must stop in front of 38’ line, which was refused by USA)
In first war:
DPRK wanted to occupy SK, finally failed.
USA and ROK wanted to maintain SK, finally won.
In second war:
USA wanted to wipe out DPRK, finally failed.
PRC wanted to prevent any USA force near the border, finally won.

Well, not really; consider the GOAL of NK supported by China was to annex South Korea and was confident it would expand its line of communism. In the end the south was not conquered and while not a victory for the UN, neither was it a victory for China. Looking at the results over time, SK is a prosperous, modern industrious nation while NK has seen suffering, starvation and suppression and cannot survive without help from China. I think China actually lost.

while some would argue that China did not achieve military victory in korea (fought to a stand off), but politically it was undoubtedly a great victory.
korea was the first war that China was capable to voluntarily send troops to fight against foreign power for well over a hundred years. it was an amazing boost of confidence in the rule of CCP. it made a lot of Chinese realise that their government could protect them against foreign invaders, something hadnt happened for a long time.
the fact that mao's son died fighting in korea inspired a whole generation. it was part of the reason why mao was so respected by that generation.

This is answer based on the knowledge I’ve gathered in history lesson in High School (I’m in my last year, so it’s still fresh in my mind) and by browsing the internet. So I can be wrong.
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS THINK FOR YOURSELF AND CHECK MULTIPLE SOURCES, WITH DIFFERENT POLITICAL VIEWS!
The Korean War, as it’s name suggests, is war that begin between the capitalistic South Korea(I’ll abbreviate it to S.K. or the South) and communistic North Korea(N.K. or the North), spilt up the same way as with Germany: a part for the USSR and a part for the other Allies/US.
When N.K. invaded S.K. in a surprise attack the North could easily went past Seoul(S.K. capital) in a few days. The South saw they would certainly lose and that the capitalistic Korea would disappear into a communist Korea.
So they called in the support of the new found United Nations (commonly abbreviated as UN), in other words the US.
N.K. knew they couldn’t beat the US so they called in the other communist nations, including China.
As far as I know China didn’t play a major part in the war. The USSR played a bigger part with many armed personnel and supplying tanks and planes. What I’ve read on the overview article on the Korean War page on Wikipedia about China’s part is that China mainly tried to get both to dialogue on peace. Especially when the UN/US keept winning terrain and almost completely defeated N.K. and far in the North.
The war ‘ended’ with the original border and the installment of the DMZ on the 38th parallel. It’s still being fought in Cold War style, with recent nuclear testing on N.K. side.
To answer your question directly:
So far no one has won, and especially not China since it played a relative small role on North Korea’s side. And it’s a war between to two other countries, not China.

No. There was little desire on the part of the UN to continue fighting. A cease fire effectively ended the fighting. There is no peace treaty and fighting can start at anytime. The DPRK uses this threat to extort money, oil food and goods from the West.

Diana Tevlon, Chief at Risks Assessment Group
No winners in the Korean war, otherwise the two Koreans would’ve been united.
Preston Ingalls, lives in The United States of America
It was fought to a stalemate. That explains the Ceasefire versus peace treaty. To say China won would be to say the UN won.
Darren Ewers, CEO & Founder at SELF EMPLOYED ENTREPRENUER
Plain and simply No as no one won as technically the peninsula is still at war - however China did get a puppet state (even if lately its been rather unruly) compared to the whole of Korea being a friend of the US.
Vincent Zhao
It is not a win, it is just getting its purpose and pay heavy price
Havit Steel Structure, Steel Structure Fabricator in China(在中国做钢结构)
China no win but no lose ,
Jackson Dawson, former (currently Freelance) Graphic/3D Designer at Lightmares (2017)
No winners. The war never ended technically.
Hosiki Kim, self-employed(个体户)
It is a sad story.
Nobody wins, nobody lost.
You see. There are 2 Koreas now.
If one won the war, it must be 1 Korea now.
Gregg Gray, former Worked at the White House for Six Years.(在白宫工作过6年)
Nobody won the Korean War, it is still going on.

Basically yes. When mcarther decided to push the north as far out of s. Korea as he could it went really well so China had to get involved because the could not stand the idea of western influences being next door to them. the same is true today. It didn’t take long to realize that thousands of American were dying at the hands of the Chinese and not n. Korea
Huynh An
No!
North and South Korea were EVEN. The USA kept an “outpost” (SK) alive while China kept the “barrier” (NK) from being overrun.
The result was a draw.
Christopher Witman, Ex-US Army and Reserve Veteran of ten 10 years w/ an Associates in Military hist
They won it about as much as the US and UN did.

According to the strength of the United States, they should attack and occupy Beijing at least . However ,they were stopped on 38°N.
Randall Jacobs, former Retired at Medical Device Industry
It ended in a truce. I would say that all parties were losers
