Maine’s lobster industry, a staple of the state’s economy, is becoming a casualty in the burgeoning trade war between the U.S. and China.

做为缅因州的标志性产业的龙虾产业正成为迅速扩散中的中美贸易战下的受害者。

China’s appetite for American lobster is voracious. The country consumed a record nearly 18 million pounds of it last year, equaling roughly 20 percent of the American lobster industry’s $648 million export total.

But Beijing is clawing back against new U.S. tariffs, slapping an additional 25 percent levy on U.S. lobster. And those in the lobster industry fear there will be big challenges ahead.

The changes threaten profits for dealers like Michael Marceau, co-owner of The Lobster Company in Arudel.

“50 percent of what we do here at the Lobster Co. used to go to mainland China. Since, July 6 we've sent none,” said Marceau.

The company employees 20 people. Worker hours have been cut but Marceau hopes to avoid layoffs.

“It doesn't just effect my crew. It affects lobster catchers, their crews, the trap makers, the guys that knit heads, the guys that do rope, the guys that do buoys,” Marceau said.

He’s weathered many storms in his decades-long career and wonders what this latest one will mean.

The world trade agreement says outside nations are not allowed to import items they have marked lower than what is manufactured and for sale in the host nation, thereby unfairly impedeing competition of the host nation. This is in the agreement China signed as a member of the WTO and they have never obeyed it.

And if you think you get competitive by making raw materials and commodities like steel 20-30% more expensive than other countries that's not the way you do it. Even with automation and ignoring labor costs, that's not sustainable.
