India can be better than the U.S.A, creativityflows in india as much as or more than U.S.A. But India should strive toprotect children and women as much as possible by providing schooling and soon. These are basics they should get right because if they do I am sure therewill get more shooting stars who will light up their sky and the world. If theydon't then the shooting stars will just disappear into the night and die and noone will know they ever existed.

Thousands of years ago India was like USA. USA is a kid when compared with Indian sub-continent. The present USA isa settlement of 450 years old. The present India is a settlement of 4500years old. USA will be in the same condition, as is India now, after somecenturies.

Quality - Not the Quantity
India’sEconomy has been showing growth for years along with that of China. But morethan that, it actually depends on the quality than the size of the economy. Theinflow of Money has to be shared broadly among all the citizens of the country. The GDP growth will still be higher if a percentage of people could make moremoney than that of the poorest section which reflects in the national economy.Well, that would not be enough. The contrast between the richest and thepoorest needs to be minimal. The day India’s economyachieves that, India would be near to the standards of USA.
Dollar
Almost 80% of all the international financialtransactions are done in U.S. Dollar which shows the trust, belief in thestable and sustainable Economy of USA by the rest of the world. As long as thisscenario prevails, USA will remain the supreme power, which would be near toimpossible for India to achieve.
Oldest Constitution
India is a young country who was kind of rapedby the colonial rule. In contrast, USA has the oldest written constitution, acountry that gained independence more than 200 years ago. India had to takecare of too many things since the day of Independence. India had to take careof the chaos caused by the partition, the illiteracy, communalism, seperatism, broken economy and what more. In a perspective, the way of governence have beenevolving in USA, while India still sticks on to the governing documents thatwas prepared under different circumstances. There are laws, regulations andpolicies that need to be reformed to have a better outlook that could sync withthe present day world. So the day India get rid of the trauma and the hauntingpast they had, there is hope. Though it still takes time to catch up with thesupermost nation in the world, it ain’timpossible.
International Relations
The more financial support a nation couldprovide, more powerful their international relationships they would have;political and economical. USA is that country which is currently providing thelargest share of financial support followed by The United Kingdom. To achievethe same, a country has to be financially stable. This would directly lix withthe first point that I have mentioned. To have a huge political influence inthe world, India has to provide huge financial assistance by becomingfinancially stable at home by having an economy of quality not quanitity.
Military
China stands at the second position among thenations which spend more in military while USA being the number one. Sayingthat, the investment USA has in military is four times more that of China. Itwould be noisy back in the country if India invest that amount of money inmilitary while infants die of malnutrition; though it’s infact true that India’s political bordersare regions of tension and conflicts. As long as these scenarios prevail, India’s military influence would not match up with that of US.
Statistics
The Literacy rate of USA is just less than 100%while that of India is less than 75%. The impact that literacy rate can have ina society is huge. It influence the society in all walks of life.
India stands at 130 in Human Development Indexwhich indicates the overall development of the citizens of the country whileUSA stands at 8th.
The day India could match up with USA in theseparameters, all could say, Yes India would be as good as USA.

I can't give you a short answer. But I cantell you a short story that might highlight the differences.
I have an associate who lived in the USAstudying biology (or something). She's an Indian. She didn't likethe USA. She's a rare breed of Muslim that is sort of reformationist (likeLutherans or somesuch). She rejects (what I think are) the lateroccurring Hadiths. She is (or was then) a strict, "Qur'an Only"Muslim, pacifist, egalitarian. Maybe I'm an ignorant American, but I'venot seen many of these. We sparred quite a bit but usually got on quitewell: we challenged each other brutally and kept each other on ourtoes.
Anyhoo, after having a conversation with her anda group of other associates in which I expressed my love of and passion forIndia/Indians, she retorted (angrily) that I was a racist, culturalist"standard American". I asked her why and I remember herpointing out something that may well be true about me. I'll try to be asaccurate as possible in quoting her.
"You love Indians because you see all theIT professionals, doctors, scientists and 'hard-working' college students herein the USA. You don't love anything about Indians. You love whatyou think Indians do here in the USA: the perfect immigrant. Nocriminals. Hard working, well-educated. Your prejudice is obviousbecause you conveniently leave out other immigrant groups like Hispanics whichdemonstrates your racism.
"This is because your opinion of Indians isstilted by the very distance which Indians must cross to get to the USA, whicheffectively filters out all the people you'd think were 'undesirable'. Because if India were next to the USA, you'd have a lot of illegal bordercrossing. You'd get all the rapists, the sexists, the criminals, the thugs. You'd see the horrible corruption that comes with being Indian and you'd simplybe 'silent' the way you are with Hispanics† orother groups. You'd have gangs just like Latino or Black gangs. Prisons would be full of Indians because of that.
"But the very fact that Indians have to getan education, then experience, then a visa, then spend a thousand dollars, geton a plane, fly to the USA completely filters out all the 'riff-raff' thatwould be here were it not for those obstacles. This self-sextion sends youIndia's best and brightest. So of course, you love Indians. The USAgets what is effectively all of India's least corrupt, best educated mostupwardly mobile people!
"So don't say you love Indians. Youlove doctors and IT engineers. Not Indians. When I say 'I loveIndia', I know what it means to love my country -- warts and all. That's why I'll be moving back there one day."
I have to admit, I can't argue with her. It doesn't change my fascination with India, but she's a persuasiveperson. I can't help liking what I see here in the USA. I hope thatdoesn't change when I finally get to India.

No! No!! No!!! India can't be like USA in thesame way USA can't be like India. One can NOT be like another.
If you ask Sachin Tendulkar to play basketballlike Michael Jordan, he will never be able to do so and vice versa. Same is thecase of India be like USA. Let's try to understand why India will not (andshould NOT) be like USA -
USA is a capitalist country. There is a strongreason for USA to be capitalists. It is NOT by chance. It is capitalist becauseaverage American's life is centered towards materialistic life - economy, scientific discoveries, innovations. USA produces a great inventor, greatbusinessman every 100 km every 10 years starting from Benjamin Franklin(1706-1790) to Larry Page. If your countrymen "focuses" oneconomic growth, your country will get economic growth. If you run towardssouth, you will end up somewhere in south. If you observe the economic growthof America, you will see that the root cause of it lies in - their scientificdiscoveries and innovations. In last hundred plus years, from Wright brothersto Steve Jobs, all have invented something or other that helped America to doeconomic progress. Let's take a look at American economy. See majorcontributors from Walmart, Coca cola, GE, IBM to Apple, Google. You will seeall of these actually created "value" from ZERO by innovations alone.Just for an example to explain my point, consider the iPhone that cost Rs50,000 in India. What it is actually? Some pieces of plastic, metals, glassetc. Separately each of it has no value. But by innovating a smart phone andbranding it as iPhone, it got such a high cost. This is how "value"is created by innovations. And Americans are master in it.
USA is not a natural country like India. It isbunch of great people gathering from all the cultures of world. So it has highchances of having "common goals" like economic progress and focus onsmaller things of life.

I'll tell you why they can't do the same inIndia. There are several reasons actually:
Most of the Indians in USA are IT workers. Theywork in already established organizations, meaning they don't make USA betterdirectly. They do the work assigned to them by their management.
Now, the Indians who start companies here andcreate jobs and make the place they live in better. They are a short percentageof all Indians here. They do it here because it is easier for them to do that.Ease of business is really a good factor for overall development of an economy.I'm all for restrictions on companies but Indian bureaucracy takes it toanother level and cripples the businesses they should be empowering.
Endless politics and corruption that hampergrowth in businesses. Once a company is successful even on a small scale, everyone wants a piece of it. Or else you can't run it successfully.
Unemployable people in India. Colleges don'treally teach employable skills. It is up to the pupil to find out what theskills are to even begin learning. Colleges still enforce laws of 19th centuryeducation and expect students to be obedient robots.
Fix all of this and people will never leave inthe first place. Bureaucracy is still deeply rooted in the Indian society andcorruption naturally follows.
Any person, who brings change is labeleddangerous, cast out and ignored. Any attempt to take power away from where itresides is met with contempt.

Ashutosh Mehndiratta
Of the 200 odd countries in the world, I am notsure why this obsession to compare India to the USA and expectation to becomelike that.
Athletes in various sports category oftencompete in their weight class or gender or even age groups. India is ranked atdifferent positions than the USA on various rankings and it would make moresense to compete against its cohorts. We can take criteria like GDP per capitawhere the USA is ranked anywhere from 5-10 in the world and India is rankedaround 140. Population wise, India is 4 times more populated than the US (1.25bvs 318m). Area wise, the US is 3 times bigger than India. History wise, Indiahas record of continuous human activity for last 5,000 years while the US isaround 200 years old and that too a different historical trajectory. India hashuge cultural and linguistic diversity while the US is pretty much homogeneouswith domination of a single language. Therefore, the comparison of India andthe USA is more of an apples Vs oranges situation.
OP has mentioned that Indians have done well inthe US which is very much true. However, I have a question mark in my mind whenit comes to giving back to the American society. There are around 3 millionIndians in the US who are engaged in IT industry, running motels, restaurants, gas stations, Doctors, Cab drivers and I got to know hundreds during the 11years I spent in the US. I don't recall any discussion around giving back.Discussions often revolved around the immigration rules of the US, visas, jobopportunities, how to pave the path for next generation to get into topUniversities, dollar-rupee conversion rate, deals on electronics, Walmart, politics of India, cricket, bollywood movies, best Indian restaurants, Diwalicelebrations, maybe giving back to India (but not America), etc. There may befew successful Indians who have given back to America but unfortunately none cometo my mind. They have done well for themselves and their families. On the otherhand, there may be examples of rockstars like Rajat Gupta of McKinsey whoturned out to be a scamster.
The right thing to do for Indians who sincerelywish India to develop and grow would be to study the world in a widerperspective. Study why some countries are rich while others poor. Study whyquality of life varies in various countries. Spend more time learning about ourown neighborhood. Study the trajectory of countries with deep past, likeGreece, Egypt, Iran, China as they may be comparable to India. Having the USAas a benchmark and stressing out will not help much, in my view.
