The Philippines booted the U.S. military out of the country 25 years ago,  deriding the American troops as unwelcome guests and living symbols of colonialism. Now, fearful of a rising China, Manila is asking Washington to send them back.

Manila, for instance, fears Beijing could seize control of the disputed Scarborough Shoal after repeated clashes with Chinese coast guard vessels over fishing rights. It sees the American military as a powerful friend that can help it counter China.

I read a lot of comments here about this,some stupid and all,maybe my comment b stupid,my option that the Filipino kick us out of the phil,they never help the usa out in any war or natural disasters,yet we help them out so much give them money went they had bad typhoons and yet their gov never used it to help them,they pocket it and didn't help anyone,now they want the usa to go help them fight their war with china,i feel that the usa should stay out of it and let it stay btw china and the phippines, not the usa,we shouldn't get involve with it,leave it to them

I worry more on the insurgency and the terrorists in Mindanao putting a lot of strain on the economy. The presence of the Americans should be focused first on this issue and put this as priority. Once addressed will bring in new investors and more investors fleeing the very high cost to operate in China, etc. A US base in Basilan or anywhere in the Zamboanga peninsula will be strategic and would also be closer to the contested waters with neighboring countries.

I dont think China fears the US military in Phillipines or Japan. I mean obama announced his pivot to asia so the military will have to go somewhere right? I dont see china attacking anyone but just building and the question is what is the US going to do about it? If the US dont plan on challenging the claims, as it does not now? Then all this posturing is nothing. We will never out muscle China near China unless we are planning to bring 80-90% of our planes and military there. They are also nuclear with elusive nuclear capabilities to counterstrike. We can count on China not hitting us first but they will counter strike. A war with China over the South or East China Sea? No way. We will exhaust most of our resources and not win only to draw. Occupy China and think they will welcome us with open arms like IRAQ (major miscalcualtion here) LOL. All this is posturing. Time is on their side and not ours. They will only get more advance and stronger here. The longer we wait to attack china ( not saying we will) the more resources we will need. And at some point, it will not be worth it as it is not within our national interest. It is not even about national interest now.

Even with US military in Philippines, it will not " “convince the Chinese that pressuring its neighbors into giving up their territorial claims is actually not in China’s interest,” simply because the Chinese believe that this is their territory in the first place. After all US military are already in South Korea, Japan and Australia.

The Russian fighter jets, bombers, troops and warships will use the islands with newly built airstrips which are now claimed by the Chinese to conduct joint military exercises. It's a long flight from mainland Russia or China to send bombers to US territory such as Guam, but with Scarborough claimed by the Chinese, it's very close to Guam and only 135 miles from Subic Bay or Manila. With so many islands claimed by the Chinese, Americans will have their hands full while protecting vital interest in Europe, Middle East and Australia. It's agreed upon by the Southeast Asian countries not to militarize those islands so as to have freedom of navigation but the Chinese conquered those islands. They claimed that there were evidence of Chinese artifacts in the 12 century but that's due to trading of Southeast Asia with India and China prior to the century. It's because their ancient Chinese traders left behind a couple of dishes, doesn’t make China the rightful owner. The Southeast Asian region claimed the islands in the 7th century before divided into many countries and China have no shares at all, therefore building anything without permission from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Taiwan, and Vietnam, is against international law. It’s also an act of invasion therefore the Southeast Asian Nations have the right to take it back by force.

Historically, Limahong was the legendary China's ruler of the Sea, named the sea from it's shore "South China Sea" and anything seen above and below the blue waters is territory/property of China. UNCLO definition of territorial water is 200 navigable miles from it's shore. According to the Chinese officials the disputed islands are located on the South China Sea, so, it is their territory and they have sovereignty over it. Rhetorically, Many Chinese people are uneducated in history, but will believed and support the Communist Government. Their claim of the disputed islands has no bases and merely stupendous in nature.
