Like many Southeast Asian cities, Jakarta has long suffered from a lack of infrastructure development. But that’s quickly started to change over the past year as Asia’s two wealthiest countries and most powerful competitors, China and Japan, have pledged to help build new railways, roads, and the city’s first subway.

On the line are valuable trade routes through the South China Sea and expanded spheres of influence in Asia. The two countries have avoided military conflict. Instead, they've waged a multibillion-dollar financial war whose newest player, the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), has Japan and the United States worried that China could reshape the global economic agenda on its own terms. Dr. Lam and other analysts say it's too early to declare a winner, but that Southeast Asian countries have much to gain.

Japan with its industrialization head start, Japan did not initiate any plan for Asian or Southeast Asian infrastructure. Typical Japanese selfishness & close minded thinking. This was why tried to decimate Asia in WWII, but really did not think it through. Japan with its democracy & being a US bitch could not even gain popularity & political traction in the US.

China initiated plan to build up and integrate Asian or Southeast Asian infrastructure economy. China is doing the same in Africa. China has much larger cultural, demographic, economic, geographic, and political footprint in Asia. It has the economy of scale, natural resources, and both white and blue collar labor force to pull very large scale projects. Ask the Africans. Japan is culturally, economically, politically, & demographically isolated on the island. It is population is shrinking, it relies on host nation's natural resource and can only offer know how, where China is already on par. All over Asia, Overseas Chinese dominated the footprint. Never heard of an overseas Japanese. The cards are stacked in China's favor, but you don't see this or positive China news in the Western media. There is no fluff coverage for the Chinese, only gloom and doom.

Most importantly China have self sufficiency capability. Japan does not, if Washington state stops shipping timber, it wouldn't have toilet paper to wipe Japanese #$%$. If we stop buying Japanese cars, Japanese could not afford to travel to the next village.

最重要的是中国拥有充足的自给自足能力，日本则没有。如果华盛顿州停止向日本输送木材，日本人就没有卫生纸擦PP。如果我们停止购买日本的汽车，日本人都没办法都邻村串门。

Yes Japan has the "Hello Kitty', yes it cute, but that is about it. Think about these facts.

Why do these news people seemed so upbeat and excited about a possible war with China? This reminds me of how William Randolf Hearst was promised a war by Teddy Roosevelt that made him filthy rich. I guess there is still money and fame to be made on people's suffering...

Admittedly, Japan has very much a head start over China in terms of industrialization and modernization. But then the tempo of progress is very much in China's favor. When the economy of Japan has been stagnant for most of the last 30 years, China has progressed by leaps and bounds, first becoming the factory of the world, then fast overtaking Japan as the world's 2nd biggest economy.

Lesser countries in the world, especially those in Asia/South East Asia should take their cue from world no.1 the US when choosing between China and Japan to build their infrastructures.

Don't forget, the Chinese have been the mentor of the Japanese for most of the last 2000 years, except for a fraction of this period, i.e., the past 100 years or so. Up to this day the Japanese still cannot understand their ancient history without a good grasp of Chinese, the Kanji, simply because their ancient history was all recorded in Chinese.

After seeing China's Aircraft carrier, I'd say Japan should win! The ramp design in an aircraft carrier causes excess G force to the pilot, the aircraft to lose speed upon launch and thus lift loss to the aircraft. Very poor design!

Do I want a chinese made car or electronic equipment, or a Japanese made car or electronic equipment? Let me think about that one for about a 10th of a second. Japan wins hands down.
Tainted infant milk,  sheet-rock, poisoned dog food, computers with irremovable malware, poorly made clothing, electrical components of shoddy quality that fail constantly. I think the poor quality of Chinese products runs the gamut from food to high tech. Given a choice, I don't see why anyone would chose a chinese made product over one made ANYWHERE else.

Competition is good for consumers. China did good things for Southeast Asian nations. Without Chinese involvement, Japan would not be more open and generous to these countries. It is benefit the world.

Pretty much everything Japan used to be get at, now China does it. Quality wise, they are now manufacturing Japanese Brand electronics. Ever looked at your Sony, Toshiba, or any other Japanese Branded product and looked at where it was made. Most than likely China. Only some Japanese Origin Car that you see in US, are made in Japan, everything else is now China made, including Japanese, Korean, American Brand products.

Japan has all the ingredients to hold this position. It is the country that has the respect, admiration and decency that all nations in SE Asia and the rest would would attest to. The other one is a bully, territory grabber, thief that no country likes.
