No surprise here - a lowhead dam aka death machine. I'm 99% sure they are no longer made in the western world since if you happen to get caught in them (even with a lift jacket) you're not coming out. Often times people don't come out even after they have drowned - and it's too dangerous to retrieve them. It's happened many times in the US where these dam types were fairly popular in decades past - they are now being removed slowly. Here's the number of deaths per state for such dams in the US: http://www.safedam.com/uploads/3/4/7/6/34768672/published/2016-state-death-map.jpg?1490197301
Here's an diagram of what is happening to the water: http://www.safedam.com/uploads/3/4/7/6/34768672/2749391.jpg?479 .
Basically that little drop-off you see from the surface is a super-fast stream that is sending everything deep into the water beneath. That's where you will go if you're caught. When you try to surface you're sucked back towards the dam and then pushed under again. Repeat until you drown. The only way to get out is to swim down with the current and don't surface until you're far away from the dam that you're not sucked back.
http://www.safedam.com/uploads/3/4/7/6/34768672/published/2016-state-death-map.jpg?1490197301

I was thinking that people couldn't swim then panicked and drowned others (a common occurrence in many places). Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure if they are still made or not but as someone who's into kayaking I can tell you they're everywhere still. So many people have died in them it's really sad. Kayakers know the dangers but many regular people don't. And if you don't know what to do chances are slim that you get out alive once trapped. When your survival instincs kick in the last thing you'd do is dive down. Also if the current is strong enough you might not be able to get out on your own even if you know what to do.

What’s more all the air in the water means you lose buoyancy too. Kind of like being dumped on by a big wave... continuously...

I thought this was going to be speed boats but nope it was dragon boats in calm water. That odd little drop off thing did them in.

they're being sucked back into the backwash of the dam. they'd either need to know how to escape or be far away/fast enough not to get sucked into the backwash. doesn't help that a lot of mainland chinese are not the greatest swimmers.

If you see the video noone was wearing life jackets.. also I bed that some didnt knew how to swim and that none had training on emergency situations while on a boat..

We might be tempted to make light of this situation or use this tragedy to yet again trash so-called Chinese chabuduo culture but people have lost their lives and we must be resp oh who am I kidding mass loss of life doesn't move me at all anymore. Like most people in China I'll tsk tsk and then go on with my life.

Yeah the sides are pretty placid but there’s a bit in the middle with a pretty strong current. Every summer in Yangshuo you’d hear about multiple tourists drowning in the Li. It would probably help if more Chinese knew how to swim though.

Actually had a college student who grew up on an island in the Yangsze. Of course she couldn't swim a lick asked her why she said her family believed it was more dangerous if you knew how. Not even kidding.

I was lucky enough to learn to swim in a completely safe wading pool at the YMCA at a young age while so many of my students have told me that their father or uncle literally threw them into a river in order to "teach" them how to swim.
Nice wading pools were not available to them but I think there were alternatives to the "toss them in sink or swim" method. The fear they had of water made it impossible for me to teach them to swim later. It's one of those weird Chinese things as soon as they put their face in the water they start freaking out. Never saw that in America.
I was actually talking about this with my dad. The pool he goes to has swimming lessons and he says there’s always a couple of black/Hispanic adults learning as well. Apparently they are pretty freaked out by the water too.
