DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A videoclip of Saudi Arabia's top cleric saying that the game of chess is"forbidden" in Islam because it wastes time and leads to rivalry andenmity among people has provoked heated debate, and widespread criticism, amongArabic Twitter users.

The clip was shared on YouTube in December,gaining traction in recent days on social media. Some Twitter users mockedGrand Mufti Sheikh Abdelaziz Al Sheikh, saying chess is an intelligent game andthat is why conservative clerics decry it. Others defended his religiousadvice, saying that many other Islamic scholars have also warned that the gamecan be addictive and cause people to lose focus from their daily prayers andremembrance of God.

Amazingly, I can sort of understand the man's reasoning. I went by a friend'shouse when I was young. He had just bought a new set. He asked me if I knew howto play. I said that I did. I three-moved check mated him at least 3 timeswithin the next 5 minutes. The last time that I check mated he slung all of thepieces off the board and threw the board across the room. He was hot. We neverplayed chess after that.
