When one reads enough Chinese naval literature, diagrams of multi-axial cruise missile saturation attacks against aircraft carrier groups may begin to seem normal. However, one particular graphic from the October 2015 issue (p. 32) of the naval journal Naval & Merchant Ships [舰船知识] stands out as both unusual and singularly disturbing. It purports to map the impact of a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) strike by twenty nuclear-armed rockets against the United States.

The map below that graphic on the same page illustrates the optimal aim point for a hit on New York City with a “blast wave” [火风量] that vaporizes all of Manhattan and well beyond.

Any rational person would have a reasonable fear of contracting Ebola. But that's a farcry from the "Obama's trying to spread Ebola! Wall the borders! Quarantine everyone in their homes!" rhetoric that the media (mainly the right) was peddling.

There is a far greater chance of it mutating into a form that spreads by air than you have of being killed by a lunatic. There is a related virus that is lethal to monkeys that spreads by air. It happened at a facility in Reston Virginia. It was just luck that strain was not lethal to humans. It just is a matter of time before there is a pandemic of a disease with a high mortality rate.

I wish this were mere fear mongering. Russia was not the only country that felt threatened by the US first strike strategic defense policy initiated by Bush and continued by Obama. These weapons didn't pop out of a toaster after the recent US war mongering over the dirt in the South China Sea. Since Bush made a vague threat about Chinese action in Taiwan, the Chinese have told the US over and over again that China will nuke the US if the US attacks their forces in Asia.
They are as serious as a heart attack about that. And most US presidents are stupid/corrupt enough to attack.

Successful "aggression" is when one party overcomes another party by force. That has been the human story, since earliest times. Some Chinese today insist that the 13th-14th century Eurasian Mongol Empire, including Russia and Eastern Europe, is "lost territory" of China. Mongols conquered and seriously degraded the cultural legacies of Song dynasty China and Abbassid Islamic civilization in Baghdad. Only Western Europe was spared from conquest by the Mongolian Empire. In the 14th century, plague was introduced from Tibet to China and to the West. European population dropped by one-third. But the survivors had resistance to plague bacterium that came with animals like rats. From the 15th century, Western Europeans sailed across the seas to distant lands, most of whose natives had no resistance to plague. The declines of aboriginal populations under European "aggression" was in large part due to infectious diseases. Of course, the Europeans had cultural, especially technological, advantages over those people, too. That is the Darwinian reality of human relations, which modern Chinese fully accept. In the South China Sea, China expects to dominate the neighboring countries. But Vietnam has resisted China's imperialist aggression for two thousand years and wants to ally with the USA to resist China. The outcome is still unknown.

Vietnam is feared by its smaller neighbor, it has been expanding southward for the lasts thousand years, slowly absorbing Campa and other hill tribes and darker skin people in the south and the west. There will be no Cambodia and Laos today if not for the protection from China. Ask any Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean and they will tell you how fearsome was Vietnam in the 70's that they have to rely on China to keep peace after US defeat in Vietnam War. Today, ship owners and captains of ships plying South East Asia unanimously wanted China, not Vietnam to control the sea lane there.

Hmm, they could try to nuke the U.S. but nothing would land. Called the Star Wars program, ICBMs wouldn't make the coast. They would have to rely on SLBMs to have much chance of nuking anything, which would be restricted to the coasts. If they could get past the ground missile defenses. Plus, if they launch, we launch. M.A.D. is still a real thing, only we have a bubble of protection.
