I rode China's superfast bullet train that could go from New York to Chicago in 4.5 hours — and it shows how far behind the US really is

Traveling to China can often feel like visiting the future. The cities stretch out for what seems like forever, while new skyscrapers, bridges, and futuristically designed landmarks spring up every year. Nowhere is this feeling more apparent than when you encounter China's high-speed railway network. At 15,500 miles, the country's "bullet train" is the world's largest. And it's getting larger. The China Railway Corp., the country's government-owned train operator, is getting close to finishing the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, a high-speed rail line spanning more than 80 miles.

America isn't necessarily behind on tech. We just don't have a political system that allows for the implementation of new tech at such a fast pace.

China does not require environmental impact reports, union wages for people who build their rail system, court hearings for the government to acquire land, and multiple stops to please every congressional district it passes through.

The most interesting part of the article: We have an Amtrak train that goes 150mph, something I never knew existed in America.

Why would anyone want to go to Chicago?

I'm all for bringing high speed rail to the US. However, based upon the performance of Amtrak and countless other "transportation" agencies, the Taxpayer funding spend on such a project will be squandered even before 1" of track is laid.

Flight time is 2.5 hours. What's the point?

It makes sense for them to build something like that because of high population density. We probably will lose tons of money if we have trains like that.

Great things are possible when you don't have to worry about pesky human rights and the PC Police.

Do you want US to go back by building these trains which cost more and travel much slower. I am flying from Orlando to Boston ( 1200 miles) in 3 hours, 5 hrs door to door for about $100 each way. And we have had it for last 75 years at least, if not longer.

Here's a fact that no one mention when it comes to high speed train. Not one in the world is financial feasible, everyone of them is losing money and only exist through government subsidies.

Even though I'm for high speed rail, we need to compare difference between China and US: 1) All land in China is owned by government. Thus they are 100% eminent domain and compensation is not required. Obviously this does not work in US. 2) US also has extensive domestic air travel. China does too, but airfare probably costs more than US.

Also........we're behind because we can't get from NY to Chicago faster than 4.5 hours? Anyone else questioning the entire premise of this article??

That's because we make things called jets that can do it in 90 minutes.

Just because America decides to not spend billions on a train that a very tiny fraction of the population would use (in fact, the train would be at minimum capacity 9 trips out of 10 unless they only used it a couple of times a week) does not mean the US is "behind."

I hear we are also behind 3rd world countries in horse and buggy technology, what are we to do?!?!

As long as Americans are so attached to their personal cars, we will never make the proper investment in mass transit. As we convert to autonomously driven cars, I wonder if people will be less attached to cars. However the "big 3" did really good job in the 50's and 60's of convincing Americans that they needed personal cars. And I guarantee that 90% of the people reading this comment will say "We do need personal cars, They didn't convince me." demonstrating the remarkable effectiveness of their marketing campaign.

US: has always had tech to build bullet train, but doesn't build one because we don't need one. primitive China: doesn't have tech to build bullet train, so steals it to manage overcrowded nation. So who's really the one that's behind?

If we quit being the world's ATM, we could have these things too. China takes care of their own people/country first,...that's something else we can learn from them.
