These days, any self-respecting person knows how to take a selfie — after all, we shootmillions of self-portraits a day and in the two years since Oxford Dictionaries crowned “selfie” as its word of the year, we’ve gotten pretty good at capturing our best angles on screen.

The reason why pale skin is seen as beautiful is because if you are pale, you obviously do not work outside and therefore must be wealthy. It's a very old beauty standard that goes back to the days when everyone had to work outside to raise crops to feed their families. There is an obsession in Asia among younger women to have big "anime style" eyes because it's different. It probably has a lot to do with the influence of Western culture or maybe they just like big eyes, pale skin, and big breasts, and shapely hips because it's things they don't normally have.

Any selfie which shows off the cell-phone in favor of the person is a phonefie. Its so ridiculous. Look at Kylie Jenner, she does not even look like she is trying to be in the shot, its all about the phone, she is looking at her phone. I wonder "is the rubber skin new?", "what version of the iphone is it?". She is dressed in black and acts as a giant curbed shadow for her rectangular deva.

What the heck is the author of this article talking about? Yes, actually, beauty is universal, as human nature is fairly universal, based off our evolved psychologies and biology, and the human ape has not changed or evolved for thousands of years. Symmetry, signs of good health and genetics , these are all universal beauty standards that people are innately attracted to.

Whatever happened to confidence being sexy? I've been to Asia and I know the motives behind these 'beauty standards', but these things don't work to their (women or Asians) advantage in many ways. Who really wants a woman who is afraid of the sun, 'innocent' and weak? The answer would probably be vain and weak men who lacks any real character. What's that gonna get them in the end? Probably a fake relationship that won't last where they go around comparing themselves to other weak, vain people. Save face societies need to evolve and get on to gaining face by doing things that build character and society. Then they'll find what they are looking for. Don't be afraid to get your feet wet, your hands dirty and, now, your skin a little brown. Anybody worth anything will be looking past that for the real you anyways... Good on ya women (and people) of character.

IDK how it is in China, but Japan has photo booths that both men and women use that make your images super unrealistic. HUGE eyes and plastic "brushed into oblivion" whitened skin are just a few things these booths do to pictures, and the Japanese love it. I see no difference in Asian beauty standards and American.
It is being someone you are not, to get likes or approval from peers and strangers. Cute, sexy or whatever, it's still fake.

Yeah, as an American living in China I'll say.. they want pale skin and big eyes. At the same time, there isn't a single Chinese person not using a photo filter. Chinese people actually pay for premium filters because they believe it will make them look better. Then you meet the girls in person and many of them have bad skin, don't look as thin and have tiny eyes.

I'm brown skin due to my mixture of Latin, Indian and some Western European and several Chinese girl I have asked out was not interested and I believe this is true about the skin as some have said. Its a culture thing. Now I don't even bother with Asian girls as I seen European women much better looking and have much better success with them. Not to be mean but truth is European women look better than most Asian women and don't have to put on 30 tons of makeup to show it.

I disagree self-respecting people don't take selfies. They are not so egocentric to feel the need to photograph themselves on a daily basis.
In fact I argue only NON self respecting people take a large amount of selfies.

No matter what country you live in, selfies are stupid and nobody really cares about them, not even your family and friends. Really people just look at them to make fun of you. Think about when you bring vacation photos or baby photos to your family or friends get togethers and everyone dreads seeing you pull them out and isn't really paying attention.

Starting from the age of four my Chinese family would always mock and ridicule me for being overweight and tan. When I started high school in China (I grew up in the States), even the teachers would laugh at me for being heavier than all of the other girls. Being fat is NOT OK in China, and there& #39;s no sympathy for overweight women. I don't get the comments anymore because I'm 140 pounds of pure muscle (I lift heavy), but it still hurts to think about.

Nobody beats mainland Chinese women when it comes to selfies or solo photos of themselves everywhere...on their work-desk, throughout their home, their computer or iphone wallpaper..it'll blow your mind. Then again, the mainland Chinese are generally insecure and their society managed to surpass that of the U.S when it comes to "ME ME ME!". Not sure how they did it, but they did.

Let's not forgot that a lot of these people have taken some crazy selfies - like in the bathroom mirror. There's a lady's photo floating all over the internet where she took a selfie after having just used the bathroom, so she forgot to flush. Her log was in the selfie, too. Now she 'll remember that for the rest of her life, because everyone else will.

My grandmother was Japanese and I remember seeing her Japanese magazines while growing up. They were full of ads for whitening products and ways to make your eyes more western (without the fold) and slimming products. I remember some kind of rubber/plastic suit that you'd put on and it inflated with hot air I think, I couldn't read the Japanese writing, but it looked ridiculous to me.

Insecurity breeds selfies. The more one obsesses over their appearance and posts it for the world to give them words of acceptance, the more shallow and vapid one becomes. It alters their reality and their ability to live in the real world. Looking at all of these selfies I realize that these don& #39;t show beauty in any way. These odd pictures just show weirdly distorted self perceived notions of what they hope others feel are beautiful.
