Why do Chinese tourists still eat Chinese food when traveling and not try local cuisines?

It is their culture to celebrate their own. They travel in groups and share the whole trip as a close knit family out for camping would.. they plan their itineraries, bring their provisions and do everything together - that for them is where the fun is — reveling in communal activities that everyone is comfortably familiar with and can enjoy together as a one big happy family… and food is something almost sacred to them. You cannot separate a chinese person from their food… they would bring their condiments and seasonings and snacks they love from home and packed chili and some bring cooking supplies and would go to the local grocers for fresh ingredients and cook on their own wherever possible — their tastebuds are used to a smorgasbord of different dishes in different regional styles served together and cooked with herbs and oily spices in contrasting strong flavors while served piping hot — frankly they find western style cooking bland, dry and boring.
For the most part they don’t find pizza, steak, burgers, fries , side dishes of potatoes and salad appetizing. They dislike creams, jams and cheese and find western pasta with loads full of mayo and melted cheese inedible. They dislike any drinks served cold with their dishes and would frown upon cola and cold beverages nor cocktails…. they only want hot TEA or hot Water and those are expected to be free complimentary.
They mix their dishes altogether on a table and would order probably 12 different dishes for a group of 8 people and share…. everyone gets a small bowl and could pick whichever they wish … intermingling sweet pastries, soups, dumplings, noodles, meat, veggies however randomly they want basically getting a taste of everything on the table. The more dishes of varying degrees of flavors laid on the table like a banquet, the more satisfying the meal.
Needless to say they also aren’t particularly impressed with 5 Star Micheline dishes that serve “exotic” food in uncooked varieties just sprinkled with lemon… neither does teeny tiny portions of “expensive” meat or game scattered with Worcestershire sauce (or any other simple style sauce of sour, tangy flavors in olive oil and basil) and with leaves artsyly arranged in a picturesque platter downed with fine wine particularly good enough… they think it amusing but ultimately pretentious and wont exactly qualify for a hearty filling meal nor worthy of a group excursion must-do in a travel itinerary.
they don’t dine — they feast. They don’t go to dinner for the quiet ambience, they go to dinner to laugh and celebrate flavors and stories and get talking in boisterous unguarded tones. They slurp their food in joyful abandon and that is a good thing for them. And they seek places to eat where they can relax and be themselves. And they become frequent loyal patrons.
The Chinese believe in recommendations by other Chinese… and if a resto gets a bad rap from one, you can bet that word of mouth spreads and no one will eat In That restaurant… conversely a restaurant (or anything actually) with a good word of mouth going for it will most definitely experience an influx of Chinese customers.

Many Asians have trouble stomaching all the western cuisine that are typically heavy in meats, creams, and fats, every day, day in-day out. And this means 3 meals a day burger, schnitzel, fries, fried chicken, pies, and whatnot. Because Asians don’t count bread as a meal. Bread or pastry are snacks for most Asians. I like western food (I’m Asian, born and raised in Indonesia. I’m Chinese-Indonesian), but while studying in Germany, I couldn’t go for a whole week without eating an Asian dish. The variety of spices and herbs used in Asian dishes is what we need, I guess. Western food lacks this. Rosemary, tarragon, etc are good, but we do find it quite bland and boring in comparison to our fish sauce, shrimp paste, and tamarind sauce, for example.
My Korean friend disliked all the fats and cream used commonly in western cuisine. Korean food is usually not very heavy in oil, and even if they do put oil, they mostly use sesame oil, which gives a very rich flavor and aroma.
Another factor: for many Asians, a real meal consists of rice. So if you give an Asian a burger, or a fish and chips, or even fried noodles, some would still feel like they haven’t had a “real” meal yet. I’ve personally known people who ate fried instant noodles with rice.
