Out of the 1.3 billion people in China, Liu Wen is the first supermodel. She got her start by submitting photos to an online model-casting call in hopes of winning a computer, the grand prize. But she wound up with a lot more than a computer: She became the first model of Asian descent to walk in a Victoria’s Secret show, and has graced international beauty ads as the first Asian global spokesmodel for Estée Lauder. In town to promote the brand’s new Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask, she talked to the Cut about  how she’s not perceived as traditionally beautiful in China, how she’s seen the perception of Asian beauty change, and how her skin-care routine is “not easy at all.”

It’s been six years since Estée Lauder named you an Asian spokesperson. How do you feel like your relationship to beauty and the Asian perception of beauty has changed?

Before I modeled, I never thought I was beautiful. Even right now, I don’t think I’m beautiful. I think it’s my personality that makes my beauty different and unique. If you look in the past, Chinese people have always considered things like big eyes, pointy nose, or big lips beautiful. I had the same thoughts as a child watching movies.  

在我成为模特儿之前，我从未想过我是美的。甚至到现在，我都不认为自己漂亮。我认为是我的个性让我的美丽显得独特又与众不同。如果你看一下过去，你会发现中国人说到漂亮想到的总是大眼睛、高鼻子或大嘴唇。因为小时候受到电影的影响，我也有一样的想法。

But as you grow up, you understand more about what beauty is. It’s not just about the outside. Your look changes depending on your confidence, and then your beauty changes. When I first came to New York all the people were saying “You look so Asian, because you have a different eye shape.” They didn’t really understand because they didn’t really see that many Asian models.

但当你长大以后，你对什么是美有了更多的理解。它不只是外表。你的外在变化取决于你的自信，然后你的审美也会改变。当我第一次来到纽约所有人都说"妳看起来好东方，因为妳有一双特别的眼睛。"他们并不真正了解，因为他们没有太多机会接触亚洲模特儿。

But now, there are more and more Asian models and opportunities to understand Asian beauty. For example, before, people would put me in red lips because they thought it looked Chinese. But now, they put a lot of red lipstick on Asian models because our skin tone is different than the Caucasian one and they see that it suits us. Asia isn’t just about red.

但现在，有越来越多的亚洲模特儿有机会去了解东方美。举例来说，之前，人们总是为我涂上红色唇膏，因为他们认为这样看起来才像中国人。但现在，他们给亚洲模特儿使用大量的红色唇膏，因为我们的肤色和白种人不同，而他们觉得那适合我们。亚洲并不是只有红色。

You say that you don’t see yourself as beautiful. But I find that curious because as a model, you’re celebrated for your beauty.

您说您不认为自己是美丽的。但我发现奇妙的是做为模特儿，您是以美貌而闻名的。

I don’t think I’m beautiful. People probably think I’m cute because I have dimples and am friendly and always smiling. But beauty is different. In Chinese, people say I have chi ze, which means aura or a strong sense of presentation. It’s not about my look. It’s about confidence. I think this is what people see. 
For example, I was in China doing a TV show for Chinese New Year. Normally, actresses wear a dress onstage. But I was wearing a Dolce & Gabbana pink suit. People thought I would be wearing a dress, because it’s a very traditional event. In the comments, people said, “Oh, she looks beautiful but it’s not just the face, it’s everything.” I don’t know what my look is, but I think my personality is stronger than my face. Also, my face is not traditional. I have small eyes, and I don’t have a double eyelid. But this is natural. I have to appreciate this.

我不认为我是美的。人们可能觉得我可爱，因为我有酒窝、态度友善，并且时常面带微笑。但美丽是不同的。在中国，人们说我有气质，意思是个人呈现的氛围或一种强烈的风格。和我的外表无关，而是关乎自信。我认为这才是人们所看见的。例如，我在中国参与了一个春节特别节目的录制。一般情况下，女演员会穿礼服上台。但我穿的是杜嘉班纳的粉红色西装。人们认为我会穿礼服，因为那是一个非常传统的节庆。人们评论说，"喔！她美的不只是脸，而是全部。"我不知道我是什么模样，但我认为我的个性比我的脸更突出。此外，我的脸是非传统的。我的眼睛小，而且没有双眼皮。但这是自然天生的。我必须为此感激。

I see many beautiful women of all ethnicities that are not classified as 'supermodels' but are beautiful to me. Same can be said about some 'supermodels' that I don't find particularly attractive to me. To each his own I guess.

Often times, the girls or guys who appear most beautiful to the naked eye do not photograph the best, as the camera 'sees' something else. The camera for example loves sharp angles and wide plains on the face, features that people, through social conditioning, might scoff at. This is why the so-called hot girl or guy in school rarely if ever becomes known for their looks, while the gangly, nerdy and bullied ones do.

What this article is saying that in order for anyone to be considered beautiful, you have to be tall, skinny, and somewhat decent looking. It helps if you're supermodel status. Btw, she is just your average Chinese woman that you wouldn't even take a second look on the streets of Shanghai or Hong Kong. Her only exception is her height.

 这篇文章说的是想要成为公认的美人，你必须是高挑，瘦小，还要有几分端庄。如果你是超模的话，这个很有用。顺带提下，她只不过是普普通通的中国人，在上海或者香港街头你甚至还不会多看一眼。她唯一的例外是身高。

Actually, about half of East Asians have the eyelid crease naturally. They still have the lower nasal bone and less prominent brow bone and different eye shape that sets them apart.

How is this changing the perspective on beauty? Asian=hot. This is not a new concept, and it becomes even more true when you visit your average american town and take a look at the local wal-mutants

I guess people have finally figured out that Edomites/Caucasians is not the standard of beauty..In fact according to scripture it is a curse to have pale skin=Leprosy.. and (blonde) Yellow hair is a plague.....It is a sin to look like Edomites/Caucasians....The Most High God is the Author of beauty and He is a Black Man with hair of Pure Wool...so that in fact tells you what the beauty standard truly is...FACT CHECK!

Changing the standards of beauty? Let's see, tall - check, super skinny - check, and really pretty - check. Nope I don't see any standards being changed, looks like business as usual in the modeling world.

Read her story. A lot of girls can relate to her. The Chinese establishment discriminated against her because of the region from which she hails. Now that the outside world discovered her and made her a huge star in modeling, Estee Lauder in particular, the Chinese are now kissing her teeny tiny hiney.
The same thing happened to a Black model from the Dominican Republic. They are openly dismissive of blackness, pretending they're a European country. What a joke! Then when she landed a massive cosmetics campaign, they changed their tune.

读过她的故事。很有多女孩和她有类似的经历。中国人之所以歧视她，是因为她的出生地。现在外部世界发现了她并让她成为了超模，特别是在雅思兰黛的帮助下，所以中国人现在都拍她马屁了。

I suspect that Miss Liu reflects not changing beauty standards but changing economic ones. A developing China with almost 700 million women in it is fertile ground for anyone selling panties or cosmetics.

Any woman has the potential to be "just as" beautiful. They just need to sport the right makeup, clothes, hairstyle, shoes, and manner of walking. All this needs practice, and soon anyone can be a supermodel.
