The School District of Jersey City this week emphasized its “commitment to embracing diversity,” after a vote not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha sparked protests in the local Muslim community.

由于新泽西的学区投票决定不在穆斯林开斋节期间闭校休假，在当地穆斯林社区激起抗议，本周学区领导再度强调其“拥抱多元化”的态度。

The Jersey City Board of Education voted to not close schools during a meeting with parents last week on the basis that it will cause “undue hardship” to the thousands of non-Muslim parents who might not have any where to send their kids, NBC News reports.

据NBC报道，因为当心给学校成千上万不知道把孩子送哪儿玩的非穆斯林父母造成“过度负担”，新泽西教育局在上周的一次家长会中投票决定不闭校。

“We feel alienated from the Board of Education, we feel alienated from this system,” Omar Abouelkhair told NBC, while another Muslim parent told the board that: “‘We’re no longer the minority, that’s clear from tonight. We’re going to be the majority soon.”

The board emphasized that students can continue to take days off for religious purposes without penalty, and that it would revisit its religious holiday policy later this year.

Eid al-Adha is one of the most important religious holiday for Muslims. New York City closed its schools for the holiday for the first time ever on Thursday.

First off many Muslims are born here, secondly this isn't your land nor does it belong to anyone especially Caucasians or Christians, lastly it didn't cause an uproar at all, we all have excuse letters and it is not counted against us to miss school or work. I don't understand why Muslims don't just pull their kids out for a "vacation" during their holidays. It's not necessary for every child to be out of school for less than 1% of the population's holiday, but if you wish for your child to have off call them off!

This is North America NOT the Middle East. In America, schools don't close for anyone - not even for Hispanics, and we're a majority here. Now, the only person schools close for is Dr. Martin Luther King because unlike Muslims, Dr. King fought for a great cause, he fought for American lives and for their freedoms. So, unless a Muslim religion rule can relate to an American one, your children must go to school just like every other Caucasian, Hispanic, 
Jewish, etc...

这是北美不是中东，在美国，学校不会为任何人关闭，即使西班牙裔，我们还是人数最多的呢。目前唯一让学校关闭的人是马丁路德金，因为不像穆斯林，路德金是为了一个伟大的目标——美国人的生命和自由在奋斗。所以，除非穆斯林的教条能够惠及美国人，你家孩子就必须要跟高加索人、西班牙人、犹太人等一样去上课。
