TOKYO (AP) — Japanese police early Monday caught a 23-year-old man who had been sought since a teenage girl escaped his apartment after being held captive for nearly two years.

The girl's disappearance from her hometown in Saitama, near Tokyo, when she was just 13, was major news in Japan at the time.

Police said the now-15-year-old girl escaped from suspect Kabu Terauchi's apartment in downtown Tokyo on Sunday while he was shopping in Akihabara, a district known for technology and comic book geeks. Saitama police said the girl, whose name was withheld because she is a minor, told investigators that she escaped when her captor forgot to lock the door.

The girl was seen wearing a sweat suit and sandals in the cold weather when she called home from a pay phone at a train station in downtown Tokyo. Her mother reported the call to the police, who raided Terauchi's apartment.

This sounds just like a Japanese movie I saw 10 years. A man about 30 kidnapped a girl about 17?, and kept her in his apartment for many, many months. He would go to work and she would stay in the room. After a while, she was free to walk around the room at will. One day, something happened and she went out and was seen by someone who knew her before-or something like that. They reported everything to the police, who then went to his apartment. He learned of this on TV, and drove his car into a bridge support, killing himself.

These things happen all the time in countries all over the world. When it happens in a "first world" country like the US or Japan, we are disgusted and the sick people who do it are tossed in jail. Two years isn't even a long time when compared with others, Cleveland 10 years, Austria, 20 plus and so on. Now add the third world where these things aren't even a crime and the victim count rises dramatically. I suppose we have a long way to go before we really are civilized

You folks who don't want to believe that this could happen need to read up on Jaycee Dugard who was kidnapped at age 11; held captive for 18 years - and had to be convinced that she could identify herself and she (and her daughters) were safe from her kidnapper/rapist. Then read up on Ariel Castro's victims: Michelle Knight (kidnapped at age 21), Amanda Berry (kidnapped at age 17) and Georgina "Gina" DeJesus (kidnapped at age 14) - these young ladies were held captive for 9-11 years. Kidnapping victims are often convinced that the kidnapper will harm their families - and over time become convinced (usually because of repeated physical and/or sexual abuse) that nothing can be done to help themselves.

Very very ignorant of the world, and totally unable to realize that there exists entire cultures with completely unique values, fears, habits, and such that they have never thought of or known about.
