When Stephon Marbury left the United States in 2010 to play in the Chinese Basketball Association, many expected the overseas sojourn to represent a final ignominious chapter in a once-promise-packed basketball career that had never quite lived up to expectations and had gone rather spectacularly off the rails. Few foresaw the former New York City playground and high-school star, Georgia Tech standout and two-time NBA All-Star finding in China the level of professional success, personal validation and peace that he never located in his native land ... but that's precisely what happened.

Now, six years and three CBA championships after his arrival, Marbury has received an honor perhaps rarer and greater than being commemorated with
bronze statue, a musical, a postage stamp and a museum — a People's Republic of China Foreigner's Permanent Residence Card:

Very big move on the part of Steph. He's obviously at peace, overcame cultural/language barriers (if any existed) and has fully embraced China since the day he stepped foot over there. Congrats.

Good for him. He was lost here and found himself in China. If anything he is now an ambassador not only of the NBA but the USA.

I have been living and working in China for the better part of the last 12 years teaching English mainly, although this country has afforded me many other wonderful opportunities that are not available to me in my home country. However, with the laws changing it is harder and harder to get the proper visa to stay and work here. It is impossible to show tax receipts for the chance to apply for a green card when almost everyone pays cash. It is nice to see things tightening up here I suppose but a lot of us foreigners here that have done nothing wrong but work hard to do good things are now in a position that we don`t qualify through no fault of our own to stay in a country that has become our second home.
It`s nice to see this fellow get a green card for contributions for sports but what about a person like me who is a dedicated front line worker teaching Chinese people how to speak English as well as the cultural exchange that goes along with it. Even though we are not big money investors or have PhDs I don`t think it doesn`t mean we aren`t making significant contributions to the development here.
Come on China, how about give the little guys a break and recognize our contributions in making a big difference in many of the children`s and other people`s lives here.
I consider myself an asset not a liability here and if I end of having to leave it is not just a loss for me but for my students as well.
xie xie!

What a joke.
For US$500K, you can purchase a green card in the USA. Canada has recently removed such immigration option for foreigners likely due to the large influx of chinese national. I think for something like 3.6 mil, an australian green card can be obtained. Australia remains a favorite among chinese nationals. At least in that country, there is a merit based system where immigration purposes for obtaining permanent residency and ultimately citizenship can be achived through a point based merit system open to everyone regardless of wealth.
Seriously, the USA does not need these money and it's well know laundered money has made it's way into immigration via such channels. Sadly after the fact. The chinese government are increasing after such individuals even today.

I am still bitter about him forcing his way out of the Timberwolves because he couldn't handle being second fiddle to KG. Not only that, but he forced Googs to leave as well because he couldn't stand him.
But beyond all that, I do agree with others here. His Starbury line is a great thing that he did. Refreshing to see he put the ego aside and saw a greater cause.

"Government guidelines say that permanent status applicants should have a direct investment in China, hold senior positions in companies or academic institutions, or have significant talents and skills needed in China,"
Now why can't we have sensible immigration guidelines like this in America?

Probably can last a little longer in the Chinese league, don't have the likes of Curry, Westbrook, Klay Thompson, Durant, Leonard and those kind of folk to deal with night after night. At thirty nine he would be crushed in the NBA.
