President Obama will visit Hiroshima when he travels to Japan this month for a summit of key industrialized nations, the White House announced Tuesday.

It will be the first visit to the city by a sitting president since World War II, but the Obama administration said he will not apologize for the decision to destroy that city with an atomic bomb.

Our alleged leaders, academics, and pundits have a nasty tendency to judge past actions out of context. Had the Japanese merely invited us to an origami crane folding contest, the use of nuclear weapons would have been inappropriate and highly unethical. Since the Japanese were waging total war against the US, and had initiated the war by attacking Pearl Harbor, and seemed to be in a competition with the Germans to see who could commit the most atrocities, using nuclear weapons was both appropriate and moral.

President Truman was receiving a lot of conflicting advice on how to finally bring the war to an end.
Gen MacArthur wanted a conventional invasion. Others wanted to use a naval blockade and bombing to starve Japan into submission. Others wanted to tell the Japanese about the atomic bomb and then demonstrate it to them off shore in the hope that they would surrender after seeing its destructive power. Still others urged Truman to use the bomb without warning. Truman was struggling to reach a decision... so while taking a walk with his Sec of War he asked what the Secretary thought and was told "You need to be thinking about what you are going to say at your impeachment". Naturally Truman wanted to know what the heck he was talking about...and was told "Because that is exactly what is going to happen after the American people find out you had a weapon that could end the war...but you chose not to use it". Truman went back to the Whitehouse and gave the order to use the bomb. The right decision...imo.

Days after the official surrender of Japan, the commander of the Manila Japanese garrison ordered the butchering of over 50,000 civilians; men, women, children and babies. It is a shame the Japanese committed all those atrocities in places like Korea, Hong Kong, China, Burma and the South Pacific. When you shed those big tears for the Nuked, shed some for the innocents targeted one by one by Japanese cruelty. Political Correctness is Evil. It does not take into account circumstances only twisted political messaging. By the way a Democrat ordered the creation and the dropping of the bomb.

There are whole lot of us Boomers who wouldn't be here without the bomb being dropped. My Dad, a Marine, was on Guam when the initial briefings were held concerning the invasion of Japan. The Marine Corps expected NINETY FIVE percent casualties in the first wave. My Dad expected the war to go on for another 2-3 years. The Japanese started the war & committed numerous atrocities on everyone they came in contact with during the war. They got exactly what they deserved. Any attempts to rewrite history at this point are pointless.

We dropped the bombs to save American, not Japanese lives and I don't have a problem with that, because war is war and in war you want to kill the enemy and bring your guys home alive.
Truth is we didn't give a **** about German or Japanese lives and that's why we were firebombing entire cities and burning them to the ground, to kill as many of their people as we could as quickly as we could.
And that's why we dropped the bombs, to kill the enemy, save American lives and end the war that we didn't have the resources to win otherwise. We weren't some righteous, honorable nation fighting for the freedom and democracy of the world, we were a nation with our backs against the wall fighting for our very survival, and to survive we were willing to do what we had to do and kill who we had to kill. Not honorable, not the "good guys" just a nation fighting for our people and country and doing what people want to do, surviving.

Read Richard Frank's "Downfall, the End of the Japanese Empire." Using declassified intercepts, Frank shows that the Imperial Japanese Government still clung to hopes that they could give us a bloody nose and get surrender terms that they could live with, even after the first bomb was dropped. They knew enough about atomic bomb technology to understand that they are very hard to make and were hoping that we just had one. The Nagasaki bomb and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria brought about their collapse.

Why on earth would any US president ever apologize for that. We weren't the ones who started the war and if it weren't for the two bombs dropped the war would have lasted a lot longer and more lives on both sides would have been lost. It is a shame that this incompetent baffoon is the one that is going in the first place but then it is just another taxpayer funded trip before he leaves office. How many more do you think he can cram in before the election.
