Families were still at home when the bulldozers came. Children were returning from school exams. The residents of nearly 80 apartments were given hours to vacate Postal Colony — housing allotted to low-level postal workers — to make way for a new metro train station.

In a chaotic evacuation before the twin tenements were razed, residents pelted stones at police. Witnesses said one woman choked to death when her scarf got caught in the wheels of a moving rickshaw.

The mid-March scene in central Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city, exemplified a growing outcry over a light-rail project that is being touted as a symbol of Pakistan’s economic development and its friendship with the financier, China.

The $1.6-billion Orange Line is one of the first major overseas infrastructure projects China is financing under President Xi Jinping’s vision of forging a modern Silk Road.

Chinese state-owned banks and industries have begun handing out $46 billion in investments to improve Pakistan’s roads and railways, develop several major power plants, create industrial zones and construct a massive new deepwater port on the Arabian Sea.

I cannot help but wonder that if Pakistan is so poor then why does it spend so much on nuclear arms?

Also china cares about this because maybe it is going to complicate the shipping lines in south east Asia and use this to ensure it's own goods keep flowing to EU? Probably part of some calculus on their part. Who can tell..

Dear writer
Why are you so worried about the project. Your article is pure bias. Pakistani nation is fully convinced and ready to complete this project at any cost.
Thanks!!!

Totally biased article.Wrong headline, too much exaggeration. There is no indication the project will not finish.

China is building a high-speed freight rail line all the way to Hamburg Germany.
Meanwhile, Trump says we should withdraw from the world and today's right says we shouldn't sell arms to Vietnam.
Fast ways to lose our status as the world's sole superpower...

@affableman , "Fast ways to lose our status as the world's sole superpower..."
It was lost and gone since 1975 when we can't win a war against Vietnam. Since the Middle East exploded into wars, it's more indication that we are not a superpower by a long shot. We can't win in Afghanistan. We can't win in Iraq. We can't win in Syria. Ukraine has been fighting in a civil war and we can't do a thing about it. We can only huff and puff at China in the South China Sea.
Now, tell me, where is this"superpower stuff"???

The author is misportraying the project. This metro line is considered a "commercial project" under CPEC. It was included at the insistence of the Punjab Government, and is not part of the core CPEC infrastructure plans. That's why the Orange Line is being financed with a higher interest rate. There is opposition to the project, for sure, but don't make foolish generalizations and take this as a sign of larger troubles for CPEC, especially since $28 billion worth of projects are already under construction.
Also, I hate to point out the obvious, but why is it that when it comes to Pakistan, we rely so heavily upon Indian origin journalists to do the reporting, given the high levels of animosity between the two countries?

@RAK8844
You're right and I was wondering the same.
This is not part of the "Silk Road" project...

@RAK8844 While the inclusion of Indian political outbursts in Shashank's post was superfluous, his reporting on the problems on the ground is spot on.
For equality, LA Times reporters need to have Pakistani perspective included on any story relating to India. Otherwise it runs the risk of giving the impression that it is running stories with a definite Indian bent

The problem is trusting Pakistan. India doesn't, and just had a victory in announcing their development of a port in Iran. Now they'll be able to export their goods to the middle east and beyond, and bypass Pakistan completely.
China may come to regret their partnership, as Pakistan will extort them for whatever they can get.

@anotherblowhard
Do you realize India has only firmly committed $85 million to the construction of that port? And that the port doesn't offer any new connectivity since India already uses Iran's Bandar Abbas for trade? And thirdly, why is India even investing in Iran when India wants to forge closer relations with the US?
