The T Rex’s tiny baby arms might have been way more useful than they seem

Running into a Tyrannosaurus rex in the wild would have been a truly frightening thing for just about any animal that roamed the earth between 65 million and 80 million years ago, and for an obvious reason. The mighty meat-eater was huge in size and had a mouth built to turn bones into powder. but nobody was afraid of its puny little arms… or were they?

AsLive Sciencereports, a new study presented at a recent meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology took a close look at how T. rex’s arms would have functioned, and it makes some bold predictions.

Just how T. rex used its arms and for what purpose has been hotly debated for years and years. Some believe the arms didn’t do much of anything, whileothers have suggestedthat the tiny limbs flailed wildly with sharp claws that could have seriously injured prey or foes.

This latest round of research approaches things from a different angle, seeking to determine the range of movement of the arms as a clue to their usefulness. The researchers studied the limbs of two distant modern relatives, the alligator and turkey, for hints. What the team concluded is that the T. rex could likely have turned its hands inward if it wanted to, and it may have used its arms to hold prey in place or pull it closer.

The idea here is that the T. rex knew its jaws were its most potent weapon and so it used its arms to keep prey at the perfect biting distance. We’ll of course never know for sure unless we could somehow watch a T. rex or similar upright carnivore find a meal, but the researchers are confident in what the fossils and modern animals tell them about how the dinosaur could move its limbs.

If the small arms weren’t useful they would have evolved differently or would have gone extinct. They didn’t, they were perfectly fine with them...for millions of years.

During it's reign, the mega flora was abundant including giant marijuana plants. The T-rex adapted it's arms to be dexterous enough to roll and hold large joints for smoking.

Short arms are why, though intelligent, T Rex never mastered the game of pool.

T-Rex arms were exactly the right size to grip tree trunks for climbing. T-Rex would use it's powerful jaws to grip the tree trunk, then pull it's body upward, grab the trunk with it's specialized arms, then release the bite and bite higher, before pulling the body upward again . . .
A somewhat tedious way to climb, but the reward was worth it when ambushing large plant-eating dinosaurs as they passed below . . . Often, a tree-dropping T-Rex would land mouth-first on the back of the neck of the prey, biting on impact and ending the struggle quickly, thus reducing the risk of injury to the T-Rex from a thrashing plant-eater . . .
The claws on the arms were also used to hold the back of the prey and avoid slipping off, much like a lion on the back of a buffalo in Africa in modern times . . . Claws are not "for show" on any animal, especially not a T-Rex . .

This creature was so big and heavy, it very likely would have toppled over any tree it tried to climb.

Sometimes a UFO would pick up the T-Rex from the top of the tree and allow it to drop from even higher on to the back of unsuspecting plan-eaters. Fatality!

Given that the tallest planteaters heads were elevated about 50 feet from the ground the trees they were eating from must have been about 100 feet tall. Trees of that relative small size are simply not strong enough to carry a T-Rex weighing about 12 metric tons.

Added bonus: They got better cell phone reception when higher up in the trees. It was really a win-win.

The article is about Tyrannosaurus rex...so they show a picture of Allosaurus fragilis? *sigh* Sloppy journalism.

"a new study presented at a recent meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology took a close look at how T. rex’s arms would have functioned, and it makes some bold predictions." "animal that roamed the earth between 65 million and 80 million years ago". So how does someone make a "prediction" about something that happened millions of years ago?

Jurassic Park can never happen in modern times even if we have ET's genetic engineering prowess: the earth's atmospheric condition is just so different there is no way any dino could have survived.

evolution is all about survival. the arms could very well be useless as long as they can eat/drink, feed, evade death they can have whatever useless appendages they want. nature isn't this perfect thing where everything has a niche or a use. it only seems that way because we've arrived way late to the party and have killed off most of the animals who couldn't run or hide or kill us first

Sometimea vestigial limbs or organs don’t completely disappear, but the most obvious use is to temporarily grip prey while adjusting its angle of biting. Just short (or long) enough for keeping the prey or carcass in place for the second or two needed to adjust the bite.

I have an idea! Why don't we just use their DNA to clone one and then observe how their arms work? Not a bad plot for a movie, actually.
