Why do a significant amount of Japanese visit China if media portrays China as hostile? What do Japanese people feel about China after traveling?

I hate to sound like a downer, but is there a source to verify that a significant number of Japanese people visit China? Because my experience tells me something completely different.

I’ve visited Beijing about 10 times. I think I’ve only seen Japanese tourists on the streets of Beijing only once or twice my entire life (and both times, they were salarymen there for business). On the other hand, I see Japanese tourists literally everywhere in Taiwan just for fun. There were salarymen, families, and even schoolgirls wearing their school uniform everywhere I look in Taipei. I’ve had Japanese tourists asked me for directions or to take a picture of them (one guy actually still had a film camera! Seriously, who still uses film cameras?); none of that happened in Beijing.

I have been to China four times, in Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Guangdong, Yunnan and Sichuan. It's alright, the people have been generally nice and helpful to me.

I think the media mostly portrays the government in a bad light, not the people or the country/culture. It's the same as how Chinese media often portrays the Japanese government in a bad light but from my experience Chinese people I have met have a very positive image of Japan and Japanese people.

Politics should not affect how people perceive each others, I'm not a fan of a number of political leaders in the world, but that doesn't mean I hate their country or people.

Okay. I visited China 2 times. I feel like I have to answer this. The media, well it only portray that Chinese tourist are getting trouble, Polluted cities, island disputes, etc.

Actually, Japanese impression of China is like “China? Its…Big, huge, and food is bad/good”. Nothing beyond that. Some also think how amazing Chinese historical stories are (Like me). Basically China is out of our everyday minds.

I discover China because the Great Wall and the Forbidden City (basically the place with the Mao Zedong portrait). And i really wished to visit them. Finally I could! In 2013, though I only visitted some famous spots in the East and Xi’an.

There is a lot of cross border trade at the Vietnam-China border. People from both sides cross this border on a daily basis. Additionally, many Vietnamese cross the border into China to work then come back to Vietnam at the end of the day.
