Do people of Nanjing still hate the Japanese for the Nanjing massacre today (2014)?

To be honest, the original citizen in Nanjing almost died out during the Nanjing Massacre. Most of us living in Nanjing now are the second or third generation of the migrants from adjacent cities. We hold a fairly complicated attitude to it.

We do not hate Japanese and we do not forgive them. It is those dead in the massacre that Japanese need to apologize to, not us.

Someone reminds me of the right-wing Japanese so I would like to add some words on them.

Certainly we Chinese gets angry with those people who deny about the massacre, not because we hate them. We just look down on them as they do not have a heart or a brain and dare not to admit what their fathers and grandfathers did to China.

I grew up in Nanjing till I was 16 and became a Canadian after my parents moved me to Canada. Nanjingese still hate the Japanese for what they did during the war, but they do not hate the present day Japanese people. They are not forgiving on this matter but they are mature people who understand the present day Japanese people have little to do with the past.
I visited the massacre memorial twice in the past year to guide my expat friends, only found that most visitors to the memorial were not locals. When a mother pointed at a horrifying war photo and said to her kid “The Japanese are evil. (present tense)” I felt extremely uncomfortble because she was generalizing and mixing history with present day world. Hatred does no one good, but some of the kids who are still too young to understand the complexity of world history only leave the memorial with a lesson that Japanese are devils.
This is what I am afraid of. People in the world, especially Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are systematically creating hatred and division against each other.
I hope the reality is not what I just wrote because it is time to unite and move on.
